Mercury PNW cruise! Am I crazy?

Recommended Posts

I am seriously thinking of booking a short 4 day Pacific Northwest Cruise out of Seattle on the Mercury on October 29, 2007.

I have cruised many many times, but only to warm locations. I am from the Northwest. In fact, it will only take me about 30 minutes to drive to the Port in Seattle. That is why I am considering it. Is it worth it?

I just can't imagine a cruise ship without sitting by the pool in the hot sun. I'm willing to try it out though. The price is good (no airfare). Is it worth taking a cruise when the weather is cold and rainy?

Opinions please.

You know...I'm local too, and I thought about it briefly. But let's face it, we can drive to Vancouver whenever we want! And we can get on the ferry in Port Angeles to go to Victoria any time we want. I'm saving my money for my next "real" cruise! :D

(Although it really was hard watching the Mercury sail out of Elliott Bay this afternoon as I was heading home from work on the ferry!)

No ferry lines, no driving, no border wait, no questionable motels and kids wanting to know "if we're there yet".

Lots of good food (waffles!), stress-free fun with great friends, entertainment for all ages, no airports, no housework, no formal night.

For us its not about the ports, but about spending time with family and friends in a convenient, comfortable and inexpensive way (3rd/4th person at $99!)

You are not crazy. If you're crazy, I'm crazy as well. We booked the 3 day, Oct 26 - Oct 29, earlier this week. Honestly, I don't care a lot about the ports because as Jenbo said, we can go there practically anytime. We're considering this 3 sea days with an opportunity to hop off if we choose.

I look at it this way, it gives us an opportunity to relax for a long weekend surrounded by good food, good company, people taking care of us, and endless reading if we choose. Not to mention some casino playing, entertainment that beats our usual Saturday night TV, etc. All for a price that's not much more than a high end dinner in Seattle followed by a show. And that's over in hours.

We just got back from a Mediterranean cruise 3 weeks ago and sure, that's a different type of cruise. But we couldn't pass up an opportunity for a mini cruise so close to home. We actually took this cruise 2 years ago and enjoyed it.

If I were in your chair, I'd absolutely do it! Sometimes it's not about the sunshine and warm weather, it's about the pampering, the yummy food, the onboard activities. I hope you'll go and I hope when you do, it's a wonderful cruise!!

Hi, I am not in their chairs and I am doing it...I am flying to Seattle

and going on a b2b...3 nighter and then a 4 nighter:D....I love

Mercury:) and have never visitied the 3 places we are going to before.

Was able to get cheap airfare from here to Seatac, a great price

on a hotel through HOTWIRE for the night before and I LOVE Seattle

too...and the 2 short cruises were right in the budget for me as well.

I am looking forward to cooler weather:) 90 and 90% humidity are

the normal temps in the summer here........long sleeves with a sweater and rain poncho

sounds AOK to me!

Crazy? Like a fox maybe;)

7 nights on Mercury is a REAL cruise to me:)

Lois,

I've been reading your posts for quite some time. Are you going to be on the 4 night cruise out of Seattle on the 29th of October?

We did the PNW cruise in 2005 and really enjoyed it. It was late September and the weather was a bit chilly, but comfortable. We have thought about doing it again, it is very tempting as we too live close to the Port of Seattle. We also just returned (Aug 24-31) from an Alaskan cruise on Mercury with two of our children and just loved it. We had rain in Ketchikan, but that did not dampen our spirits. We saw all the sights with hoods up and umbrellas employed. So go, enjoy the ship and have a great time.

To cruise or not to cruise...We choose to cruise..:D

Hi,:) I am sailing from 10-12 to 10-19...so I will be on board

about 2 weeks before you. The Oct 12th is a 3 nighter and the Oct 15th is 4.

Having the sun and the pool are really not all that important to me.

I do enjoy the Caribbean, don't misunderstand. But when these

sailings came to fruition...I could not pass them up:)!!!

I'm about 99% sure that my family will be taking this four day cruise. The more I think about it, the more I get excited! I even tried on one of my formal dresses today!

We (me and 2 gal friends) leave on the 3 nighter next Friday. The Mercury has a retractable roof over the pool so I will definitely be taking a dip.

You really can't beat the price for a weekend get-away. You certainly can't stay in a nice hotel including all of your meals and entertainment for 4 days and 3 nights for $250 (and that's for a deluxe oceanview cabin)!

Plus I have always wanted to do a zip-line and for $24.99 I can do it in Nanaimo :D !

My best friend and I will be on the Oct 29th sailing. I too thought "such a short cruise, is it worth it." Now that I have my express pass, my lugguage tags, and cruise contract, the answer is YES. I am just as excited about this "short" cruise as I was for the other (longer) cruises! One question however, where is the zip line? I have wanted to do that for a very long time.

John and I fly in from Chicago just to do the 3 day on Mercury!!!

As you can see from my countdown clocks, we've also booked the Millie for next September for a shortie on our anniversary.

SOMETIMES, just a little break is all you need to get you through when you can't take 10 or 12 days.

We like these shortie cruise between our longer ones just to break up the long breaks between them.

Happy Sailing!!

The zip is in Nanaimo. They also offer an obstacle course/zip experience and bungee jumping! The Canyon Zip is $24.99 and includes roundtrip transfers from the ship.

Go to www.wildplayparks.com (TYPE IT INTO YOUR BROWSER as the link doesn't seem to work off the boards) their phone is 888-668-7874. You don't have to make advanced reservations in the fall but it's recommened if you want a specific time slot.

I will report back how it was!! I have never done anything like this in my entire life  !

P.S. You are sailing on my Birthday...have some cake for me!

MsSailaway, I did some searching and found a zip line facility 15 minutes from Nanaimo called Wildplay http://www.wildplayparks.com/, I'm goint to check into it since we'll have our 14 year old and his best friend with us. I checked the schedule and they're open the day we're there.

Hi travellady,

We called wildparkplay and they said they would pick us up at the port. We also have a few teenagers with us - 12, 13, 14 and 15 - so your son won't be the only one! Counting down the days!
