Does anyone know if you can see these from the ship with binoculars as we pass by or does the cruise ships sail far from the coast?

Im afraid you wont see the boulders from a ship...some of them are about 2 meters high but you wouldnt see much from the ship of them. It is worth a visit....there is a penguin nesting ground next to them and from memory a great cafe. WE used to go there often when I was a a youngster , im not sure that there would be anything offered as an excursion from Dunedin.....

There is a company that has a 1/2 day tour to Moeraki from Dunedin that might be of interest to you - if you Google day trip to Moeraki Boulders, you should find it. We were going to do that but decided on a different tour instead. Hope that helps.
