Krazy Kruizers Posted September 3, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Alaska - Sitka - all the small islands surrounding you - no matter where you anchor. Europe - Toss up - either Stockholm or Oslo - wooded islands and fjords. Mediterranean - Venice - the approach to the Grand Canal via the Lido Islands. Caribbean - St Lucia - can actually watch other ships go by while docked.
Lisa63 Posted September 3, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Portland, Maine. Approaching this wonderful city from the water is breathtaking, with all the lighthouses leading the way.
Rare LAFFNVEGAS Posted September 3, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2004 I have to agree with KK on Sitka Alaska, in May with the Snow Capped Mountains and the Islands surrounding it. One of my highlights was very early in the morning like 6:30 as we were coming into Sitka I was up in the gym on the treadmill it was wonderful. Another port I love but I have actually not sailed in or out of it on a cruise ship but I know many have, is Kona Hawaii. With all the shops and the church there is just something that make me feel at home there.
cactuslady Posted September 3, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Almost anywhere in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia (provided one has a small enough yacht). For a cruise ship, and a real port with facilities, leaving Acapulco at night is gorgeous.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted September 3, 2004 LAFFNVEGAS Forgot about the Pacific - do agree about Kona, Hawaii.
mhshapiro Posted September 3, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 3, 2004 I didn't consider Kona's harbor to be all that pretty. Actually among urban Harbor's Honolulu actually has a spectacular one. I have some pix posted: http://community.webshots.com/user/mhshapiro Look at the Hawaii cruise albums.

jhannah Posted September 3, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 3, 2004 I really like St. Johns, Newfoundland. Not that it's all that "georgous," but coming through the narrows and seeing the town inside there is really quite a sight.

sail7seas Posted September 3, 2004 Author #12 Share Posted September 3, 2004 I agree that Portland, Maine has a pretty harbor. I loved sailing into and out of Venice and also think that St. Thomas' Harbor is pretty. Sailing by the White Cliffs into Dover is beautiful but the port itself is very industrial. Honfleur in France is beautiful IMO
sail7seas Posted September 3, 2004 Author #13 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Although cruise ships cannot come into this harbor due to its small size, it is hard to imagine a more beautiful harbor anywhere in the world than Marblehead, Massachusetts.....the birthplace of the U.S. Navy. We do not live too far from there and have enjoyed coming into that harbor on private vessels and it is absolutely beautiful. Another gorgeous harbor IMO is Monaco. Starr Mtn Posted September 3, 2004 #14 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Our votes would be: Sydney, Australia San Francisco - especially upon return in the early morning, seeing all the City lights come on, and sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge Agree re Sitka, and love Acapulco at night -especially at Christmas
aaannnthony Posted September 3, 2004 #15 Share Posted September 3, 2004 South America.......RIO! New York City is a must, just to pass by "Lady Liberty". We've done it half a dozen times, and, it's always a great experience.

Bill S Posted September 3, 2004 #19 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Most impressive for me, has been Rio at sunrise. Leaving Acapulco at night was also very nice. Other ports I have enjoyed sailing into are: Ushuaia, Sitka and San Diego. Vancouver is also a favorite, more so departing than arriving.
MISSYLOU Posted September 3, 2004 #20 Share Posted September 3, 2004 I would have to say Honolulu is a very exciting port to sail into as is San Francisco. Even though I don't care for Jamaica, the port at Ocho Rios really is pretty.

TedC Posted September 3, 2004 #22 Share Posted September 3, 2004 Oslo, Stockholm, Sydney (Aus.) and Venice - in alphabetical order. Please don't make me try to pick the most favorite!
