Pregnant and Excursions

This is our first cruise and I am pregnant. Does anyone know what excursions I am not allowed to do? Can anyone recommend some good and exciting excursions that a pregnant lady can do?

I need suggestions for Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

I would contact my OB/GYN and get their suggestions. I would definiltey not take the advice from someone here you don't know as every pregnancy is different for every woman. You doctor should be able to give you sound medical advice though as to what will be acceptable in your case and what will not. Best of luck!

We have just booked w/Princess and we had to reschedule 2 times (!) because the first cruise we were booked for, I knew I would be too far along in my pregnancy to even fly. The 2nd one, I was too far along for Princess to allow me on board. So we're booked for a 3rd (and hopefully final) time.

Princess has a rule that you must not have entered the 24th week by the END of the cruise. You do have to provide a Fit to Travel letter to Princess from your doctor as well. So that's the first thing I would check on if I were you... don't risk not being let on board!

If you check Princess' website, some of the excursions specify that pregnant women are not allowed to participate. There are some, however, that I'm not going to be doing on principle b/c I feel that it would personally be too strenuous for me (and this is my 1st pregnancy too). When in doubt, ask your OB.

Definitely check with your ob-gyn about any activity (whether it's a vacation or things you're doing around home, exercise, etc.). I went on a cruise at 5 months and it worked out great. We went on a tour of Ensenada (it was the Baja cruise), but you don't have to go on any excursion. You can always have a taxi drive you to a beach...and then just relax. You can even stay on the ship if you're not feeling up to checking out the port.

We're booking excursions that don't include too much walking time. We'll be in St Martin and St Thomas in January and altough we are seeing both Islands, most of it will be done by transport and not walking. We'll be doing some shopping too but I can always stay on transport or simply sit somewhere and have a drink. Plus, I have purposely booked excurions through Princess (usually always book independently) as if I am unwell or don't feel up to doing an excursion, Princess will allow me to cance with no charge.

I will be 4.5 months on our cruise.

I know specifically not to go in the sea and mingle with fish and dolphins etc, I know diving is a big no no as is strenuous walking in any form of heat. You will know your own limits and remember to take lots of water with you. I am sure you will have a fab time!

I tried to edit my other post, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Anyway, this is what it says on Princess' website:

"We have recently reviewed our pregnancy policy in light of current medical research on gestation risks and infant mortality outside of specialised neonatal intensive care units. As a result, effective immediately (Nov 6, 2006) we will no longer be permitting passengers who will have entered the 24th week of pregnancy by the last day of the cruise to travel with us."

Ship excursions with the "EZ" designation in the title are generally the less-strenuous tours and probably appropriate for someone who is pregnant. Many of them are still pretty good; you just don't do as much walking or stair climbing. As the others have said, check with your doctor. Some women play tennis or ski up until they start labor, others shouldn't do more than walk a short distance. Only you and (s)he knows what's best for you.

How come you cannot go snorkeling in the sea? I know the Dolphin excursion said pregnant people werent allowed but I figured it was ok to go snorkeling?

Any reasons that you know of?

There are a couple reasons I can think of - first off, there are wild dolphins. Secondly, stinging critters (like jellyfish).

In St. Martin, it is easy to go to the beach. There are plenty of cabs at the pier that will take you, or you can take the water taxi to the shopping area and use the beach right there.

And in St. Thomas, I'd do the beach too if you are a beach person. We did the excursion to St. John's - it was a wonderful relaxing beach day.

My DD was only about 2-1/2 months pregnant and we had booked a dolphin excursion. It didn't say anything when we booked it, she checked with the shore excursion desk and they said it was fine. UNTIL we got to the excursion place..... they said that they were trying to breed the dolphins and that dolphins DO respond differently to pregnant woman. Well, after the hour drive to get there and the rest of our 18 people group suiting up to go in the water, my DD starts crying. Pregnancy crying is not fun. The poor workers did not know what to do. They felt horrible that she had been told by so many people that she could go and now she couldn't. After consultation with the boss she was allowed in. It was truly weird. The dolphins did know. When they "danced" in front of everyone else they left a good distance, with my DD they kept getting closer and closer. They kept swimming by and touching her. Kind of funny. However, it was luck they let her go and I would not risk booking it again. As a side note, my nephew (34) is profoundly deaf and they laid him in the water and had the dolphins come close to him and talk to him. He could feel the vibrations. He said it was the most amazing thing.

Several years ago, a friend of mine did the dophin thing somewhere and she was pregnant w/twins. The dolphins could detect the extra heartbeat by sonar and were very excited by it, but not in a bad way. They never have twins and could not figure it out. They kept coming up to her and nudging her gently.

I suppose the reason they don't want pregnant woman to swim with the dolphins is thatthe dolphins might bump a woman too hard in their excitement especially when the sense she is pregnant. I don't know that I'd want to take a chance. But that's just me, I can't speak for anyone else.
