Tortola Tour Question

We will be on the Galaxy visiting Tortola 5 Jan. This is our first visit and would like to get an overall "View" of the island and it's history - we will be doing the beaches at other ports. Celebrity offers one tour called Tortola Hightlights for 3 hours - it does make a short stop at Cane Garden Bay and says in goes on Ridge Road passing Long Trench and Fahie Hill with a stop near Sky World. They also offer a 4 hour "Historic & Cultural BVI tour that stops at the Sunday Morning Wall, Quakers Grave Yard, Belle Vue Look-out, Beef Island, and First Church of the African Slaves in Kingston. Looking for anyone that may have taken these tours.

I think we took the highlights tour--it stopped very briefly at Skyworld--nice view not much else..& we got to swim in Cane garden Beach for awhile- passed by bomba's Shack . it was nice for a first time there & then we also had time for burgers & drinks at Pussers in Roadtown & looking around in the little shops there... next time we are booked for a snorkel trip..

We spent a week in Tortola, after a one week cruise of the BVI, and I can't imagine a more boring place to take a "tour". It's an extremely small island with very little on it. If you aren't into beaches, there isn't much else there. No significant history. It's a lovely island with wonderful natives and we had a great time there, but we spent it mostly on or in the water. We rented a car and travel the whole island and there wasn't much to see.

You might be better off going to Virgin Gorda, at least the Baths are spectacular to see.

We were not impressed by Tortola either. Our daughter went there on her honeymoon years ago. when we told her we were going to dock in Tortola she asked, "Why?" the views from up high were spectacular but no more so than St. John's or some other islands. Take a "highlights" tour just to satisfy your curiosity and then go back to the ship for some relaxation.

I know the tour. We booked it through the ship and it was $29.00. It was pulled by a truck front and had buckboard train it was pulling. They seated us 5 to a row as so many booked it. Tight squeeze.

The scenery was okay and we went to that beach but a month later 2 relatives were on Tortola on another ship and they didn't book the tour but started to walk into the small village when that contraption went by, had empty seats (word must have gotten around) and offered them the tour for $20 cash. I guess he didn't have to pay a commission to the cruise line then.

My daughter sailed to Tortola from Hampton Virginia on a 41 ft sailboat with 3 others and they were there for awhile. They liked Nanny Cay.

We also spent a week in Tortola (our first land vacation in the Caribbean.) Although this was about 6-7 years ago, we would not go back. I didn't find any historical areas of interest, Sky World was just a concrete patio with the same view you get from the "top" of most Caribbean islands - IMO, and there wasn't much to Road Town either (at least at that time). Soper's Hole was much nicer but also VERY small. Thankfully we are snorkelers, and we took some great trips to the waters around BVI. Our 2/25 Galaxy cruise also stops in Tortola, and I definitely booked a snorkeling excursion.

We loved Tortola!

Go to my travel blog (in siggy) and look at our photos- it's a beautiful island. We got off the ship and there are tour vendors fairly close to the pier. We did a one hour "Best of Tortola" tour for just $10 each, and the scenery was fabulous. We definitely recommend it.
