Does anyone take Airborne or anything like it before a cruise?

Recommended Posts

Not trying to be mean, picky, what have you but I REALLY doubt you got the tonsilitis from the airplane ride. You probably had it before you flew and it took a day or so to get going and it just happened to really get going at the same time you were on the airplane. There is no way you could prove it came from the plane unless you swabbed everything on the plane down and did microbiological tests to prove it was live on the airplane. Then you would have to prove you touched that then it got into you and even then it would take some time to fester and grow. Think of all the things you touched before you got on the plane, it probably came from there.

Yeah, I couldn't prove it, thats true. But the woman next to me kept downing DayQuil, telling me her throat was killing her, coughing non stop. It was awful. I thought I was on Punk'd or something! One week later, I come down with the worst sore throat ever. Then horrible tonsilitis. My doctor said the recycled germs on an airplane are pretty bad and chances are good thats where it came from. I don't need to get all Perry Mason or CSI swiping for microbes  just relating an experience I had.

Airborne is basically a multivitamin combined with Alka-Seltzer. The marketers of the product are genius. They make people believe that by taking the product, they are less likely to get sick when traveling. There is really no substantial evidence that taking a multivitamin boosts your immune system (Source: Readers Digest Nov. 2007). I think the makers of Airborne are deceptive, because they say there are no substitutes for Airborne, yet the ingredients in Airborne are no different than in any other multivitamin. Airborne also costs a lot more than a multivitamin. If you believe in homeopathic or natural medicines, then I would just recommend that you take a multivitamin or just simply wash your hands! :)

I agree with you. People will fall for almost anything!

We use a product similar to Airborne called Welborne from Walmart. It's about half the price, and seems to help me on flights. We only use it the day before the flight, and the day of the flight. None on the ship. So far, no colds since trying it.

Hi,

I'm thinking of taking airborne for my cruise. I was going to buy the little packets that you add to your water. Does anyone think this helps and if so, how do you take them. I don't really know when to begin. Ever since I came down with really bad tonsilitis from a 3 hour flight I've gotten a bit paranoid!

We always take Airborne thru the winter, especially after being out in crowds. Can't remember my last cold.

I just started taking Emergen-C for my upcoming cruise on January 13th. It is suppose to help boost my immune system. I even plan on drinking it twice a day while on the cruise. I'll let you know how it works. Somehow or the other I just don't think that Centrum Silver :p will help out on this cruise. Especially since our meet and mingle group have people coming from all over the world. I don't want to chance having someone coming on-board because they can't or won't cancel a cruise when they are not feeling 100% up to par.

Hi, yes I really believe in airborne, I start it about 5-7 days prior to any trip. I just take it once per day. If you are flying turn off the air oulet above your head, it just blows re-cycled germs into your face. Drink lots of water, and try to get a few good nights of sleep prior to traveling. Have fun:)

OT-I see you on MOS on 1/4---there is a large gathering from the meet and mingle section, meeting at the schooner bar @ 3pm.

I love Airborne! I am not normally sick but I decided I'd chance a flu shot this year and had "flu like" symptoms for a week, and have had two colds in two months. Airborne cuts this down - it must! I am around people all day and the same sick people who got me sick in the first place are generally still sick days after I have recovered.

Well, I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but...

In the past two years I have taken three cruises. Came home from the first one with a cold. Took Airborne before & during the second one and did not come home with a cold. Did not take it for cruise #3 and... came home with a cold!

Methinks I will be taking Airborne before my next cruise!

My son-in-law flys to China about 4 times a year for work and they ask him to take it the day before and continue until he is home. I am planning on using some this time for DH & myself. Mind over matter :D can't hurt and this will be our first cruise in the winter so I am willing to give it a try.

I have taken them before flights. Not really too concerned about the cruise itself. If anything, it's the norovirus to worry about, and airborne doesn't help there.

Even if you do come down with a cold, it really cuts down on the sick time.

I usually take one dose the day before, and then again right before boarding the plane. If I hear alot of coughing or sneezing, I take it for a couple extra days.

Hope this helps.

I don't think the OP was trying to claim it did anything for Noro, but I could be just as concerned about getting a cold and it hurting the enjoyment of my cruise while on the ship, there are plenty of times your in tight quarters with may passengers on the ship.

Is Cold FX available in the US? There was a thing on the news here the other day about their stock going down because it wasn't approved by the fda.

I don't belive any of these type "cold prevention" products are. But they can still be sold. I'm not sure how beneficial they are, but I haven't heard of any ill effects caused by them. I believe a lot of them use Zinc as the primary ingredient, It might not hurt people to ask their doctors if that is a problem for any special condition they have.

I totally believe in Airborne. I don't care if it is medically proven (probably not) or just a case of PMA (positive mental attitude). It has worked for me in the past and $5 is a small price to pay to try and stay healthy for my $$$$$ cruise vacation. Pop a couple and have a great cruise!

You know what? I agree with you. I've been taking it at the first sign of a cold for a couple of years and my symtoms seem to go away after a day or two. I've taken it shipboard when travel-mates have been sniffly and avoided getting sick. Seems to work for me and that is worth the $$$. :)

The mind is very powerful. If you THINK you're taking something that will keep you from getting sick, then it probably will. If spending $5 bucks and taking some mega doses of vitamins gives you that feeling of prevention, then I say it's well worth it. I've never taken anything before flying (except Bonine) but I think it's a good idea.

You know the other great solution to keep you from getting sick on a plane - drink plenty of water. The air is so dry that it can cause sore throats and dry sinuses as well. My doctor told me that.

That is just disgusting!! (The lady you had to sit next too hacking up a lung, etc.) While I do not take any of these things you guys are talking about, I am a germ-o-phob and would have wanted to place her in a bubble..lol..

My wife bought some a couple years ago. I was amused how they brag on the packaging that it was created by a second grade teacher. Yeah, most second grade teachers are well qualified to create "medical" formula's:rolleyes:

Hey teachers are EDUCATED so you cannot tell me they couldn't come up with it, come on

So you got a flu shot and then had flu like symptoms? If so it could be because they actually inject you with flu microbes to boost your immune system to the flu. Second, if you say your flu like symptoms included stomach ache and things like that, that is not the flu. Real influenza is more like a cold with coughing and such, not diarrhea and upset stomach. :) It is better to get a flu shot than to take an over the counter med.

I have been on three cruises and never taken Airborne or any of these things and never had a cold or came home with anything, explain that one?..lol.. It's like a casino, it's all a gamble but I think the Airborne thing has nothing to do with it really.

Yeah, seriously! If the plane wasn't totally full I would have asked to change seats....

I didn't read all the posts here so I apologize in advance if this was already posted. Today I went to CVS and found they have Airborne 'gummies' which are like gummie bears and are easy to take with you. I will make sure to pick up a couple packs before we travel. Much easier than mixing with water.
