How far in advance should I do my waxing?

FG,

Well, each individual has his/her own threshold of pain. I wouldn't call this process painful as much as a little uncomfortable. It does smart! But it shouldn't be more than you can bear. If your Asthetician is worth her salt, she'll make this as comfortable for you as possible. There is an art to the whole ordeal.:) That area where the "landing strip" is usually left will be the most sensitive area during the procedure - becoming less sensitive migrating outward.

As others have suggested, a couple Advil (or what-have-you) about 30 minutes prior will make a significant difference. In my anxiousness and haste, I forgot to dope up on my first visit. Wasn't terrible, but I could have spared myself a little discomfort.

You'll be fine, ;) and you are going to love the results!

For the people with questions:

Take a couple Advil an hour or so ahead of time

Upkeep is every 4-6 weeks depending on your personal tastes and hair growth cycle

If you are really anxious, a little drink before hand to calm the nerves never hurt anyone ;)

Hair should be 1/4-1/2 inch long. If it is longer, it will hurt worse during the process, if it is too short, the wax won't stick well

Don't wax close to time for your period. You are more sensitive then.

Exfoliate before and after

As far as when to do it, I usually go a week before a trip. It gives time for any lingering redness or minor discomfort to go away. But I have sensitive skin, so I may need longer than you do. It's all a personal thing

And to whoever said that the lip wax hurts the most, I agree 100%!! Yowch!

Just got a Brazilian yesterday, have been doing it regularly for the last 3 years. I paid attention to how long it took because of this thread. 15 mins. including time to undress and dress. Cost is $30 plus tip.

My waxer is great and, for me very, little discomfort. The skin does sting a little for a few hours after.

As other have posted, it need to be done every 4-6 weeks. if you keep it up the hair does come back softer and finer.

I've found 'bout $60, $65 to be an average fee for women - but you'll find the service as low as 30 bucks or as high as 90. Just depends on who you go to. We guys have a much more difficult time even finding someone at all - and then have to pay through the nose - but I digress.

You've had a bikini wax so you're already familiar with the process. A Brazilian isn't much different except you're basically stripped bare front to back. You'll want to ask what exactly the "Brazilian" includes though. There are a few different interpretations so just be sure what you're getting before hand.

I've found the most wonderful brazilian waxer in my town -- she is so good and it doesn't hurt a bit. Plus she talks and gossips the whole time so you don't concentrate on sitting there with your legs in weird positions with someone working down there.

The best thing I can say is ask a couple friends for waxer recommendations -- If you have any friends that do bikini waxes. That's how I found mine. She works at a salon with several other waxers and I swear she's the best cause she's consistently booked. I made the mistake of needing an appt one time and she was booked so I just booked with another girl at the salon. Mistake! She hurt so much! So I have no idea what makes my girl so good, but I swear she doesn't hurt at all.

As for when to get a wax before a cruise -- 2 to 3 days before you leave would be my recommendation so if you get red bumps they'll be down within 24 hours. My wax usually lasts for about 3 weeks and I usually get them about every 6 weeks. Just know that you'll need the hair to be about a quarter inch to half inch long before you can get it waxed.

Ladies, forgive me for inserting myself in this conversation but in reading through the trials and tribulations you go through in the search for beauty, I recalled a story that floats around the 'net from time to time and had to share.

If you feel the need to abuse me after reading the story - go right ahead - I'm married - I'm use to it..:D

==============

My night began as any other normal weekday night. I came home from work, fixed dinner for my son and we played for a while. I then had the thought that would ring painfully in my mind for the next couple hours: maybe I should use that wax in my medicine cabinet. I set up my boy with a video and head to the site of my demise, um, I mean bathroom.

It was one of those cold wax kits. No melting a clump of hot wax, you just rub the clear strips in your hand, peel them apart, press it on your leg (or wherever) and ignore the frantically rising crescendo of string instruments in the background. No muss, no fuss. How hard can this be?

I mean, I'm not the girly-est of girls but I'm mechanically inclined so maybe I can figure out how this works. You'd think.

So I pull one of the thin strips out. It's two strips facing each other, stuck together. I'm supposed to rub it in my hand to warm and soften the wax (I'm guessing). I go one better: I pull out the hair dryer and heat the Son of a Gun to ten thousand degrees. Cold wax, yeah right.

(Oh, how that phrase will come back to haunt me.)

I lay the strip across my thigh. I hold the skin around it and pull. OK,so it wasn't the best feeling in the world, but it wasn't bad. I can do this!

Hair removal no longer eludes me! I am Sheera, fighter of all wayward body hair and smooth skin extraordinaire! With my next waxstrip, I move north.

I drop my panties and place one foot on the toilet. Using the same procedure, I then apply the wax strip across the right side on my bikini line, covering the right half of my vagina and stretching up into the inside of my right butt cheek. (Yeah, it was a long strip.)

I inhale deeply. I brace myself. RRRIIIIPPP!!!! I'm blind! Blind from the pain! Vision returning. Oh crap. I've managed to pull off half an inch of the strip. Another deep breath. And RIIIP!

Everything is swirly and tie-dyed? Do I hear crashing drums?

OK, coming back to normal again. I want to see my trophy - my wax covered pelt that caused me so much agony. I want to revel in the glory that is my triumph over body hair. I hold the wax strip like an Olympic gold medallist.

But why is there no hair on it? Why is the wax mostly gone? Where could the wax go, if not on the strip? Slowly, I eased my head down, my foot still perched on the toilet. I see hair - the hair that should be on the strip. I touch. I feel. I am touching wax. I look to the ceiling and silently shout "nooooooo!!"

I peel my fingers off the softest, most sensitive part of my body that is now covered in cold wax and matted hair, and make the next big mistake - up until this point, you'll remember, I've had my foot on the toilet. I know I need to move, to do something. So I put my foot down on the floor. And then I hear the slamming of the cell door.

Vagina? Sealed shut. Rear end? Sealed shut. A little voice in my head says "I hope you don't have to do #2 anytime soon. Your head just might pop off."

I penguin walk around the bathroom trying desperately to figure out what I should do next. Hot water! Hot water melts wax! I'll run the hottest water I can stand and get in - the wax should melt and I can gently wipe it away, right? Wrong.

I get in the tub - the water is slightly hotter than is used to torture prisoners of war or sterilize surgical equipment. And I sit. Now the only thing worse than having your goodies glued together is having them glued together and then glued to the bottom of a tub in scalding hot water. Which, by the way, does not melt the cold wax. So now I'm stuck to the tub.

I call my friend, C, because she once dropped out of beauty school so surely she has some secret knowledge or trick to get wax off skin. It's never good to start a conversation with "So my a$$ and hoochie are stuck to the tub. She doesn't have a trick. She does her best to suppress laughter. She wants to know exactly where the wax is on the a$$ - "Are we talking cheek or hole, here?" she asks. She isn't even trying to hide the giggles now.

I give her the run-down of the entire night. She tells me to call the number on the side of the box, but to have a good cover story for where the wax actually is. "You know that if we were working the help line at XX Wax Co. and somebody called with their entire crack sealed shut we'd just put them on hold then record the conversation for everyone we know. You're going to end up on a radio show or the internet if you tell them the truth.

While we go through various solutions, I have resorted to scraping the wax off with a razor. Boy, nothing feels better to the girly goodies than covering them in wax, sticking them to a tub in super hot water and THEN dry shaving the sticky wax off!

In the middle of the conversation (which has inexplicably turned to other subjects!) I find the little, beautiful saving grace that is the lotion provided with wax to remove the excess. I rub some in and start screaming "It's working! It's working!" I get hearty congratulations from C and we hang up.

I successfully remove all the wax and notice, to my dismay, that the hair is still there. So I shaved the stuff off. Heck, I was numb by that point anyway. And then I put the box of wax back in my medicine cabinet.

Never know, I may want to try it again.

Oh my! I've read that story before, but thanks for hte laugh anyway.

My aunt is actually does waxes, but I can't go to her for a bikini or a Brazilian. IT's just too weird. She does do my eyebrows though, and it doesn't hurt one bit, but it's just too strange to have her down there.

Haha! I love the term 'bits', so funny! But who says its vanity?? It feels great - nothing like wearing silk or satin against smooth skin, no gross stubble - that's not somewhere I want a 5 o'clock shadow:eek: , less hair in the long run and yes, I love the way it looks.:D

ITA!

I go every month, so I don't notice the pain anymore (believe it or not). If you normally shave, you will want to stop at least a week before your first wax or else the hair may not be long enough to wax off, especially in some of the tricky angles. Also, don't "help" your waxer out by trimming it. She'll trim it if she wants it shorter anywhere. It needs to be 1/4" long.

Take 1 advil 30 minutes before the wax. You should also exfoliate about every other day. DON'T TAN the day of the wax, and probably not the day before or after either. If you need to tan, that's the day to cover up that area in the bed :) You could have a bad reaction to the wax!

I've got a great aesthetician who is done in 5 minutes. $40, but worth it IMO.

I've found that applying azulene oil daily helps with slowing down hair growth. My wax usually lasts two weeks, tops (less without the oil).

Brazilian waxes....what a topic!

Since I live in Brazil, I will offer my advice.

As a previous poster mentioned , AVOID this procedure right before you period. It hurts twice as much.

Wear loose , cotton clothing and undies to your appt. The "area" is quite sensitive for quite awhile after.

You can apply an aloe-vera gel or an over the

counter cortisone cream before you go to bed.

I had 3 kids -2 without an epi. Brazilian waxing hurts but it is bearable.Try not to "clench up" before the wax is ripped off.If you can relax your muscles it is less painful....

Well ladies ( and guys) I can say from personal experience that this procedure DOES spice up your sex life. It isn´t just about your husband (or SO) appreciating the visuals. It makes a difference for the woman.Try it -you´ll like it!

Mine starts to grow back ever so slowly after 10 days.

Saltwater is great for your skin. Much better than cholorinated freshwater.

Freshwater causes your skin to absorb too much water (and chlorine, which is bad for the cellular structure) through osmosis.

Saltwater has nearly the same electrolyte levels as the cells in your skin, so it remains balanced. For best resutls, swim only in salt water, rinse in fresh water, and dry thoroughly.

I bought a Seiko S-yard shaver to extend my waxing job--you use it as soon as you feel any stubble (and it only works on stubble, not on anything beyond a few days growth). That way if you can't get waxed right before your trip, or you're going to be gone for awhile you can take it with you for touch-ups along the way. It may seem expensive, but it's not really compared to the cost of a Brazilian wax job. A regular electric shaver may do the same job, so if you've got one already, you could try that first. You can keep that "just waxed" feeling with no pain!

I've had mine for a few years and I think it's great. It's the second one I bought after leaving the first in a hotel room:rolleyes:.

I'm doing my 2 days before the cruise. I have only had a regular bikini, but this time I'm going brazilian.

To me, the pain was a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Eyebrows and lip hurt tons worse.Mine was only $30 and she did a GREAT job! The closer in, it hurts, so I need to prepare in advance for the brazilian.

I think wine helps too. The spa gives out wine, tea or water and my wine definitely helped.:p

OK, I admit....I'm a natural girl. I shave my legs and underarms and that's it. I had a bikini wax (in the shape of a heart!) before my wedding. That's the only waxing or shaving my girly bits have experienced. This means that whenever I swim I have to wear a mini-skirt style bathing suit.

I'd like to get a wax again this summer.

I'm headed to the beach for July 4th. This is also DH's birthday. ;) We're going on a cruise in mid October ... my birthday! :D

I guess I'll need to get 2 waxes this summer, right? Should I get a bikini or Brazilian? When should I get it done? Should I get my legs done at the same time? I've never had my legs waxed before.

The big question: When I got the wax done a few days/weeks later it itched like crazy! Why did it itch and how can I prevent it from happening again. I don't want to be that girl on the lido scratching her whoopie.

Please Help!!!

I'm cruising my first time & I'm getting my first Brazilian too. We're leaving for the cruise day before & we're driving down to my parents day before cus we're flying with them. I've never gotten a wax before other then a eye brow wax which isn't so bad. I'd have tons of them. It did hurt kinda my last time but that's cus I haven't had one in a while. But plucking hurts lots more & such a hassle. I hate it. So our cruise leaves on a Sunday, we fly out on a Saturday & drive to my parents on a Friday. I'm getting the wax on a Wednesday. Since it's my first time I don't want to be walking like I have something in my pants, lol. Then a salon day for nails & pedicure the next day. My Hubby is getting a massage at the same salon (got a giftcard for Christmas from me). It sounds so much better then a wax.

I'm not kidding; if you have someone good who is experienced, it takes about five minutes. Get some Tend Skin; you can order it online from Sephora, if you can't find it where you live.

This size is great for travel:
