Snorkeling at Folkstone

I really enjoyed snorkeling at Follkstone last week. We took a taxi from the port ($50 round trip for 2) to this quiet, public "nature reserve". It took about 20 minutes from the port. There were a couple of people, a few chairs to rent, shade trees, and a very small sandy beach. I walked into the water and was able to see beautiful fish. We stayed about 2 hours and then headed back to the ship.

Is there coral there, or is it mainly a grassy bottom?

It's coral...substantial coral reef structure.

 

It's probably the best snorkelling to be had, along the West Coast of Barbados

if only because it's in a protected zone(at last)

and the Bellairs Research Inst. of McGill Univ. is right over the wall from Folkestone Park

so it's kinda "their reef" and has been for decades,now!

 

Bellairs is a Marine Bio field sta.

We've been there 2 times and if you think you may go there you may want to consider taking the bus. They charge $1.75 each way per person and the driver will be glad to drop ypu off if you tell him you want to go there. The buses are safe. You can catch the bus about 3 blocks from the terminal. A lot of the tourists that are there for a week use them. The locals are friendly and you get to hear Reggae music. A little cozy. Easy to get back. Buses go by every 10 minutes. P.S. They have Banks beer and flying fish sandwiches at the beach. Another hint- If tou walk to the right you will walk into some beautiful beaches that are in front of high end hotels. All the beaches on Barbados are public(not the chairs or tables)

Jakedoc, What are the names of these hotels with the nice beaches next door? How long would the bus take to get to Folkstone from the pier?

 

Any info on the marine museum here? Would it keep a couple of grandparents and 4 year old busy while the rest of us snorkel for an hour?

The bus takes approximately 20-30 minutes depending on time of day. I'm sorry I can't remember the names of the resorts. Never went to the museum but from the outside it looks pretty small. The beach does have a lot of shaded areas in the park area with benches etc. To get to the other beaches, go to the right as you're looking at the water. Small path will bring you around the corner. The beach rents snorkeling gear also.

More like 20 mins. to half-an-hour, I'd think. It's small.

I would love to do some snorkelling and just read about Folkstone. Please explain is this a beach?
