Shot for Rolex on Margarita

Has anyone heard anything to confirm this ?

A passenger from P&0's Oceana apparently was stood outside a shop buying a drink while his wife was inside shopping.

A mugger demanded his Rolex, the man turned his back on his assailant and was then shot through the chest. He was pistol whipped relieved of his watch and left lying in a pool of blood.

The muggers got caught in traffic and after a shoot out which left one policeman dead and another critical they were captured.

The passenger thankfully lived and amazingly carried on with his cruise.

Turned his back and got shot in the chest   Lying in a pool of blood but still made it back to continue his cruise.......

Something does not add up. In my mind......It is either and embellishment of a plain robbery or a complete fabrication.

Went back to Jan 1st and this is the only robbery incident I found.....

Norwegian Pearl

Norwegian Cruise LineReported in the St. Lucia Star January 21: "Six cruise ship passengers, two Americans and four Canadians were on a forest trail above the Botanical Gardens [at Soufriere] when two masked men, one yielding a machËte and the other a gun, robbed them of their ID, jewelry, purses and wallets. The two tour guides were robbed of their monies and one of them, Katia Polius, attempted to call for help on her cell phone. The bandits noticed and landed her with several kicks. When the masked men left, it is reported that the female guide reassuringly escorted the guests to their taxi . . . then fainted."

Full Story

CABBIE Steve Storton was shot through the chest by a Rolex robber on a Caribbean island – and was back on his cruise ship less than five hours later.

Steve, 53, was gunned down after docking on Venezuela’s paradise island of Margarita aboard P&O’s flagship Oceana.

He was buying a cold drink as wife Susan popped into a shop when the mugger thrust a pistol in his chest and demanded his cherished £10,000 watch.

Steve ignored him, turned away – and was shot.

As he collapsed with blood pouring from his wound, the gunman fired two more bullets which narrowly missed him.

The attacker then pistol-whipped Steve around the head before grabbing the 18-carat gold watch.

Horror-struck Susan, 57, ran out to find her hubby lying in a pool of blood and gave him first aid.

Amazingly, the bullet had missed Steve’s heart by millimetres and passed straight through his body with only minor damage.

He was able to point out the gunman and an accomplice, trapped in their get-away car in a traffic jam.

A shoot-out followed which left one cop dead and another critically injured, but the bandits were caught.

Steve was rushed to hospital, where docs put him in a wheelchair and x-rayed him three times before discharging him two hours later with just PAINKILLERS.

The dad of three then returned to the Oceana, whose captain had delayed sailing until his return.

And although he refused to leave the ship for the remaining five days of his £2,200, 14-day cruise, he took regular deck walks and ate in the restaurants.

That is some story.

I guess it goes to the fact too that people need to use some common sense when traveling. One dead, one critical, and one that is lucky to be alive over a watch. Leave the expensive stuff in your safe when you leave the ship in ports of call.

I agree, expensive items, especially jewelry, including watches, should never be worn in port. It is just not a good idea at all. We always leave expensive things locked in our safe. They remind you that when visiting, keep a low profile and a 10,000 dollar Rolex isn't exactly keeping a low profile. IMHO

I am having a hard time with this story. I can't believe a man gets a through and through GSW in the chest and is released 2 hours later! I suppose miracles do happen but i would think that the hospital would hold him for 24 hours observations-unless he refused further treatment.

Quite likely he wanted to get out of Venezuela as quickly as possible.

I spent months in Polamar (Margarita) back when I lived on my sailboat.

Petty theft is a bit more of a problem there than most places in the US or Canada. Picking pockets and purse snatching is considered a sport in Venezuela.

Getting shot is not the norm. Very bad luck.

Flashy watches and cameras are best left onboard ship.

this sounds a litte strange but if it did happen what a way to ruin a vacation. There is a reason people are advised, when traveling to many countries or in some cases within our own country to not wear the jewelry that draws attention.

How does a "Cabbie" make enough to own a $20,000 watch, and if they caught the bandits.........what happened to the watch? It says his insurance will buy him a new one.

That is what I was thinking...guess I need to give up MEDICINE and become a CABBIE....I can't afford a ROLEX!!!

Consider the source: Isn't The Sun a British tabloid not known for the veracity of its reporting? I mean, just the fact they used that abominable word "hubby" in the story should be a clue that we aren't dealing with high-quality reporting. The whole thing seems very dubious.

That was my first though when I went to the link to read the story with pictures.

Anyone else note beside me...... Given the bullet just missed Steve's heart.... and where the bandages are while he sits in the wheel chair..... guess Steve's heart is on the right side (other side) of his chest.

Also... the picture is not reversed....note the EA on the chair.... it would be backwards if the picture is reverse. I am still a doubter.

Yes, I wondered the same thing but thought maybe we were seeing an exit wound and somehow it went in sideways? Another "Magic Bullet" perhaps, lol:rolleyes:
