I am going on the GOS in August out of Norfolk. I live 5 minutes from the port and this is the first cruise I have taken where I didn't have to fly to FLorida.

I am planning on getting on as early as possible, and staying on as long as possible.

Any suggestions?

I thought about sleeping in till the last minute before breakfast etc.

that won't be very long as they usually clear the boat by 9am

First on sounds great, but the last morning is not fun! You do have to be completely out of your cabin by 8am and you will find that all of the lovely service you've had all week will be conspicuously missing that last day! You have to be off the ship by 10am, so they can start boarding the next batch!

We will be sailing on the July 24th 9 night cruise and will be driving to the port. Our plans is as late a breakfast as we can, then up to the pool deck until they kick us off. Last summer we cruise the Empress out of Norfolk and it was around 10:30 when they came around and got everyone to leave.

Only once were we one of the first to board. We got to the port early due to an early flight that morning. We were about 20th through security but the rest did not have their set sail pass filled out and the agents in charge of the lines made them fill out the forms before going to the desk area. The DW and I were the first to check in and the 3rd on the ship. Easy going in the WJ but since the doors to the stateroom hallways were closed to 1:00 we had to carry around our luggage for awhile. Still nice to see the ship almost empty.

We live about 10 minutes from the port in LA, but I'd rather be first off than last. When you're last off the ship (in LA, anyway), you end up at the end of what can be a long line to clear immigration. So I just get up, shower quickly and head out when they call the first tags. Then I go home & go back to sleep!

Now, if I have a flight after 1:00, I may linger anyway, because spending an extra hour on the ship is better than spending that hour at the airport.
