Hi, We are arriving into Heathrow airport Friday 3.15pm and want to go to Southampton as we join ship on Saturday. We are looking for any recommendations of taxi/car hire firms that will collect us from the airport and take us straight to hotel in Southampton. We are not familiar with trains etc and think this will be an easier option. Any info gratefully received. Thanks D

You will find information about this in the port sections of the forum. Check it out there are several threads on this in that section. Lots of recommendations for car hires.

I don't think the train is a good option, but there is something called the National Express Coach which are nice buses that run from Heathrow to Southampton. They are very reasonably priced and from other members of this forum that have used them a good option. They will save you probably 50% off a car hire or more. They run special on their website.

Again, this has been covered many times in the Western Europe forum. Good luck. I would definitely try to visit London if you can work it in, because it is a great city and a must see if you haven't.

As xpcdoojk wrote this is topic that often is covered. If you are concerned about costs then the National Express coach service (www.nationalexpress.com) runs directly between Heathrow Central Bus Station (near Terminals 1,2 and 3 and shown on the web site as Heathrow CBS) and Southampton at approximate hourly intervals and the journey normally takes less than 2 hours.

A single journey costs around 15GBP per person and a return (round trip ticket) costs around 21GBP per person. For those aged 60+ the fares are lower. You would normally book online and print your eticket.

The Southampton Coach Station is near the city centre and within 2 miles of all 3 of the cruise terminals. Cost of a taxi (cabs are within 100 feet of where the bus arrives) to central hotels will not be more than around 10GBP.

Have a great trip and cruise.

I'm another fan of National Express coach service (bus). We used it extensively in the UK last Spring, and it was convenient, and TONS cheaper!!

My philosophy is the hired car and the bus travel on the same road. If you don't have a zillion pounds of luggage, why not go on the bus for a pittance compared to the hired car?

Our cost from Heathrow-London-Southampton (we did 2 nights in London before Southampton) was about $18 (yes, EIGHTEEN DOLLARS!!). DH was 60, and we got a funfare which is around 2GBP.

P.S. Hi, jc!!!!
