pmfan Posted March 7, 2008 #26 Share Posted March 7, 2008 phtkz3 ... I just don't know what to say. That was quite an ordeal you went through. I too foolishly took a friend along for my daughter on one cruise. Never again! I learned my lesson. :(
Granny J Posted March 7, 2008 #27 Share Posted March 7, 2008 Wow. I'm so sorry you and your son had to endure that. I'm very impressed with your level-headed approach to the entire situation. I can't tell you the number of parents I know who would find a lawyer who could somehow put responsibility on RCCL and sue. I applaud your moral character. libertybelle41 Posted March 7, 2008 #28 Share Posted March 7, 2008 what a nightmare! We took our son's gf on one of our cruises and she complained and complained the WHOLE trip...wow and I thought I had it bad. Thanks for sharing your story. suzziecruisie Posted March 7, 2008 #30 Share Posted March 7, 2008 That is a cruise nightmare. I would of sued the kid and gramps for the cost of the cruise and then some. Did Kramer get banned from EVER sailing with RCCL?
Dr_DNA Posted March 7, 2008 #31 Share Posted March 7, 2008 Wow, I'm almost speachless... I honestly think I would've thrown him in myself..... If you had done that, would you have been able to stay on the ship? I'm guessing that there probably is a rule about throwing someone off the ship too. Darn!
Jeanie821 Posted March 7, 2008 #32 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I think I saw some people get put off on my last cruise. When I disembarked in Cozumel, there were a few people standing by the gangplank with their luggage. They did not look happy.
Granny J Posted March 7, 2008 #33 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I guess some people need to learn that there are consequences for their bad behavior. What a shame they didn't learn that lesson before they signed up for a cruise. :(
TigerLady Posted March 7, 2008 #34 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I was put off a ship in St. Maarten in January 2006. We were aboard RCI Radiance of the Seas.....to make a really long story shorter, my 19 yr old son brought a friend along on this cruise who was also 19 and we had known him for 10 yrs. Turns out you never really know someone until you are with them 24/7. He was , evidently, on medication for ADD and a few other things and had decided not to take it ( I had no prior knowledge of his conditions) as a result of him trying to jump off the back of the ship we were put off to find our own way home. $3500.00 later we had a flight booked from St. Maarten to Miami then another $1500.00 later we had our flight booked home to St. Louis. I in no way blame RCI for putting us off...it was the right thing to do, although I was freaking out trying to figure out how we would get back to the states, RCI was very helpful in making the travel arrangements. Moral to this story is to never take responsibility for anyone elses child, and if you do make sure you ask the right questions about medical conditions/ medications. As a result of this situation I am not longer able to travel on RCI with a minor in my custody. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them.....Incidently, I do realize that ADD does not cause most people to react this way , but this kid had more problems than just that. I am SO sorry that your cruise was ruined because of someone else's actions. Hopefully everyone that reads this will learn something from your unfortunate experience. teese Posted March 7, 2008 #35 Share Posted March 7, 2008 My DH and I have talked off and on about bringing a friend for each of the kids on a future cruise. phtktz3 Posted March 7, 2008 #36 Share Posted March 7, 2008 That is a cruise nightmare. I would of sued the kid and gramps for the cost of the cruise and then some. Did Kramer get banned from EVER sailing with RCCL? To be honest I really don't know if he received anything after we returned home or not notifying him of anything. I know that no one on that ship spoke to him after we were escorted back to our cabin other than the officers who came to our stateroom along with the ships Dr. and the ships Psychiatrist ( yep...they have one!) that same night. I went to the meeting with the officers in the morning by myself and then broke the news to the boys when I came back to the cabin. We did pack up so fast that when we got home I had a bunch of Krammers stuff in my bags......I didn't go to any trouble to return it;)

After reading this, I will never even think of it again. phtktz3-I feel so bad for you, and thank you for telling your story. This is the exact reason that I tell it every now and again....fact is, I really thought I was doing something special for my son by allowing him to bring a friend and was proud when he told people how "cool" his mom was for doing this, in hindsight I just should have been more careful and asked the right questions of his grandparents. My son and I had taken several cruises together before this one and always had a great time, I just thought he'd have more fun with someone his own age along as I'm sure many parents do. phtktz3 Posted March 7, 2008 #39 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I guess some people need to learn that there are consequences for their bad behavior. What a shame they didn't learn that lesson before they signed up for a cruise. :( I doubt Krammer learned anything from this! His whole trip was paid for, so he didn't lose out on any money, he certainly didn't get in any trouble from his grandparents. The only people who learned a lesson here was myself and my son.....an expensive lesson it was! Incidently, my son did shoulder some of the responsibility for the cost of returning early and having to fork over $3500.00 for our flights, he actually got a title loan on his car and paid me his and Krammers share of that flight, and then within a few months paid off that title loan. I have gotten married since that cruise and my DH and I are planning to go on the Majesty in January with some friends and family, when I approached my son about coming with us he said he'd love to but didn't know who to take with him as a cabin mate....we both looked at each other and smiled a bit and he said "How about Uncle Kyle?" which is my brother who lives in Texas....I told him that was a great choice to keep it in the family:p This will be my son's first cruise since the Radiance Incident ( which is what we call it)

zantedeschia Posted March 7, 2008 #41 Share Posted March 7, 2008 I saw that on You Tube!!! Do you have a link? There was a thread a while back about how someone had posted a video of some kids tossing a deck chair off a Royal Ship. It got to the point where someone posted a comment on the YouTube page about the thread here discussing it, and the video shortly after disappeared. spammie Posted March 7, 2008 #43 Share Posted March 7, 2008 WOW Lori, thank you so much for sharing your story. I can't even imagine how awful that entire experience was for you and your son. I just assumed that anyone over 18 was responsible for their own actions. I have cruised with my 2 kids who are 22 and 20 and I DEFINITELY will not be bringing any of their friends along on a cruise. Luckily they get along great together and really enjoy hanging out with each other. Wanda

I do wish you the best and I think I remember seeing a post from you about taking the kids with you since their dad had to cancel, all I can say is to set up some ground rules with them with their father present and then let them know that if they don't follow your rules you can put them on a plane back home from anywhere in the world...you know this is possible since you read about it here on cruise critic from a lady who had to fly a kid home who was mis- behaving;)

cavkc Posted March 7, 2008 Author #47 Share Posted March 7, 2008 Lori I so feel for you, as others have mentioned, we to have 'thought' about taking friends along for ours sons, but after reading your story it simply will not happen now. It must have been one of the worst experiences of your lifes. However it sounds as if your son has his feet firmly on the ground and he is obviously a credit to you
