Passports??

Hi Everyone,

 

We thought we were in good shape because our old passports didn't expire until July 2008 so when we got our DD's passport in December we decided not to renew yet. Come to find out you need 6 months before expiration when you take a trip! :eek: Does everyone know this? Luckily it only took 2 weeks! :D

That six month rule does not apply to all countries, but it certainly is a good idea to have time on the Passport - you never know, you just might end up hospitalized for the duration in a foreign country!

I think that's mainly so you wouldn't inadvertently get caught abroad with an invalid passport. Good to know, though. Mine doesn't expire for another 18 months or so, but I didn't realize the lead time was so large.

Most countries require a passport be valid for at least 6 months after you enter the country.

Yes - I knew this and had a similar situation.

 

My passport expired in March of 08 and I decided to take a last minute cruise in Dec 07. I had problems with the HAL site putting my passport info in even though Mexico didn't have the 6 month rule. From everything I could tell, I didn't need the passport.

 

I went ahead and renewed it just so there would be no problems as I knew I had to do it anyway and costs were going up. Mine also took 2 weeks.

As stated, different countries have different requirements.

 

We had no problem when we visted Australia and New Zealand with less than six months because they only required three months.

 

So, check the requirements of the countries you will be visiting.

We are Aussies and all our documentation says 6 mths required ..

I've read on all the cruise line websites that it can't expire within six months of your cruise.

"Make sure your passport is valid for the period of stay you are applying for."

 

Does not appear to require any time past your planned stay.

ahhh..that would be why, they are a lot tougher now..

even our passports have changed , they now have a micro chip in them, so they know we are in the airport before we even go to the counter to check n!!

 

it is 6 months validity beyond your travel return date..
