mirrajay Posted June 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2004 I noticed on Carnival's site that you can order fun ship dollars for use onboard (like onboard ship credit). This seems like a brilliant idea to buy for yourself! Right now, I am putting money in a savings account for my cruise, but have been tempted (and have given into temptation a few times) to take money out of there for other things. So, I could buy Fun Ship Dollars and its basically like putting money on your sign and sail card right?? Is there a catch here? Are there things you cant spend the Fun Ship Dollars on? Has anyone done this? Thanks! Carey Carnival Victory, here I come!
Nitemare Posted June 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 16, 2004 You should probably ask this question on the Carnival board here at Cruise Critic.

Boo's Mom Posted June 22, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2004 Mirrajay..... I just ordered some for my sister-in-law who just sailed on Carnival. You can order the gift certificates and have them mailed to your home...or anyone's home. Or...you can just order it and it will be delivered to your cabin. I love gift certificates. It's a very good way to buy a gift for someone...who is going to be taking a cruise. Boo's Mom ...as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. cruizintexas Posted June 24, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 24, 2004 I have also started purchasing the FunShip Dollars! I buy some every two weeks. I also purchase the drink coupons. This way it won't be sooooo expensive -- I hope!!

I don't think you can just take them to the ship and spend them. Anyone know?
cruisinonmymind Posted June 26, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 26, 2004 Fun ship dollars cannot be used in the casino or for tips. I thought that was kinda stupid though. If you are given Fun Ship dollars as a gift or for yourself, you paid the full amount so Carnival gets their money, I don't know why they dictate where you can and cannot spend it.
pholter Posted June 26, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 26, 2004 I'd personally prefer a credit to my S&S Account over a Gift Certificate. I don't want to have to carry around something else I might lose.... What about change if they are actually giving you a Certificate??

I bought fun ship $$$$ for my last cruise had them delivered to my home and went down to Purses desk first night of cruise and applied them to my sign and sail card. That way they can be used for almost anything you want. It is a great way to pay for your cruise before you go!!!! It worked great. You must buy the $$$$ a while before you cruise to be able to have them sent to your home. :)
Winston13 Posted July 27, 2004 #11 Share Posted July 27, 2004 What about doing money orders every two weeks. When you get on board you could just go and have them put on your sail and sign like you would normally do with cash. If you aren't good at saving this seems like it would be a good idea. Anyone ever done this? I usually just overpay my credit card so that I am in the plus instead of the negative and sail and sign away. I have never used the fun ship dollars but will be looking at this thread closely to see if it is something I might want to do.
palmtre2 Posted July 27, 2004 #12 Share Posted July 27, 2004 Sending my Mom Funny Money to put toward her next cruise - like the original poster she oftens spends it on something else. This can be applied to the purchase of a cruise as well as ship board funds.
jfritz126 Posted July 27, 2004 #13 Share Posted July 27, 2004 You can actually call Carnival and order Sail & Sign credit in $25, $50, $100 or $500 increments. It is just applied directly to your sail & sign acct and can be used for anything at all. 1-800-929-6400.
mirrajay Posted July 27, 2004 Author #14 Share Posted July 27, 2004 Exactly JFritz - this is what we ended up doing. I just put another $200 on there this weekend! I was just about to give up on the Fun Ship Dollars idea until I found out you can do this. For anyone else wanting to do this: I had to call three times until someone actually told me that this was possible. Others told me I could only order them and have them sent to my house. I had to call a "special" number to find someone who was willing to do it this way. Its 1-800-609-7603 for the "Certificates Department". Happy Sailing! NinaCO Posted July 27, 2004 #17 Share Posted July 27, 2004 Everyone else must spending a lot more than I do on the ship.:o On my last cruise, I received a small check from a $100 cabin credit. I did bring some soda on board, which I don't plan to do this time. And, I received a bottle of wine as a gift that I took to the dining room. I have $264 (:D ) budgeted for non-tipping expenses on Conquest. I'll be surprised if I spend that much. I used to spend a lot more -- shore excursions, photos, shopping, etc. But, I don't book shore excursions through Carnival anymore. My photos rarely turn out. :( And, the shopping is usually better at the ports. About the only things I put on my S&S are drinks & wine, and I'm not a heavy drinker. I'll spend significantly more prior to the cruise (2 days in New Orleans!) and at the ports. For someone who spends like I do, it doesn't make sense to have lots of credit for use on the ship. If I had a hard time not touching the money, I'd buy travellers checks each payday and just put them in a drawer.
imlulu Posted July 27, 2004 #18 Share Posted July 27, 2004 I want to give fun ship dollars to my kids as part of their Christmas gift. I am filling a large rolling duffel bag with various cruise items and wanted t include these. They don't know about the cruise so the bag will be a surprise. However how can they use them on the ship????? I thought they could use them in arcade and virtual reality. They would just take their GC in and be able to play. IS that how the gift certifcates work???or do I have to go to pursers and put on my sail and sign as they cant charge on theirs??? Any ideas??? mirrajay Posted July 28, 2004 Author #19 Share Posted July 28, 2004 Imlulu - You can purchase physical Fun Ship Dollars that you can put inside the duffle bag and the recipients of them just take them to the purser and they are applied on their Sail and Sign card. I thought that kids could have their own S&S, but I dont have any kids, so I wouldnt really know. But they CANNOT just use the gift certificates in the arcade without putting them on a S&S card. Hope that helps. Carey
judithdh1 Posted July 29, 2004 #20 Share Posted July 29, 2004 Last year when I heard about this I thought that I would start buying Fun Ship Dollars in 25.00 or 50.00 once a paycheck (paid bi-weekly), and when I get enough saved us them to purchase my next cruise. Seems kinda like a savings account for those of us who swear we are going to save money for our next cruise and keep deeping into our cruise money, swearing we are going to put it back and never do. This way if I send off for these Fun Ship Dollars I have them and can not spend them on anything else. Judi Hensley
kcox12345 Posted March 21, 2005 #21 Share Posted March 21, 2005 So is the advantage of a ship board credit, as compared to Fun Ship dollars, that a plain credit can be applied toward anything including gratuities? Is that accurate?
2boyzmom Posted March 21, 2005 #22 Share Posted March 21, 2005 So- since I already have fun ship dollars- can I use them on board for the spa or other goodies?
Magnifique1908 Posted March 21, 2005 #23 Share Posted March 21, 2005 This is a question for those who have previously used Fun Ship Dollars for their S&S accounts. Did you all still use a CC to activate your account, then go to the Purser's office once onboard to add the certificates to your accounts? I'm trying to figure out exactly how this works. If you do it that way, do they subtract from your certificate balance before they start adding charges to your card, or is the card not needed at all? Thanks again. sjcruiser Posted October 16, 2010 #24 Share Posted October 16, 2010 To OP, I'm like you with trying to save money, so we buy several hundred dollars worth for our cruise, and they were always in place when we boarded. We did take copies of the invoice/confirmation/receipts from the purchase, just in case.
