Alacazam Posted March 22, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2008 A question for some of the Alaska cruise veterans. I would like to know which port is best for whale watching, Juneau or Sitka. Thank you in advance for your input See Ya Alan
thinfool Posted March 22, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 22, 2008 which port is best for whale watching, Juneau or Sitka.  I cannot speak for Sitka, but we saw plenty of humpbacks, including a pod bubble feeding, in Juneau last August. A couple of other boats also saw Orcas. We also saw a TON of humpbacks from the ship as we left Glacier Bay headed for the Gulf of Alaska. To top it off, we watched a lot of Belugas feeding on fresh salmon as the train took us along Turnagain Arm on the way from Whittier to Anchorage. Budget Queen Posted March 22, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2008 Juneau whale watch tours are just about 100% sightings of humpbacks. In the last several years, humpbacks are also season feeding around Sitka, they used to only be in this area late season several years ago. So you would most very likely see humpbacks in both areas, but out of Sitka it will be a much smaller portion of your tour concentrated on whales. If a priority to see them, consider both areas via boat. Excellent wildlife opportunity.
