pog27 Posted April 12, 2008 #4 Share Posted April 12, 2008 My guess is other lines will wait to see what happens with Celebrity before following suit. Celebrity could lose a significant amount of business...apparently they made the change because a survey of Celebrity past cruisers found only 10% care about smoking in the cabin and on the balcony. I believe that...but what about their spouses? Other family/friends traveling with them? In some cases whole groups might choose another line simply to allow those who smoke the opportunity to do so without an inconvenience. It's also possible the amount of people who will start cruising with Celebrity because of the policy change exceeds those they have alienated. It's anyone's guess but I bet none of the big lines will follow until these new rules have been tested.

I expect their business will increase as many of us will migrate toward a line offering smoke-free balconies. When that happens, other lines will be forced to follow suit. This move is long overdue. BobBeaSea Posted April 12, 2008 #6 Share Posted April 12, 2008 The high end cruise lines started this trend, it is only a matter of time until all of the mass market lines follow, as Celebrity has.
runrgrl Posted April 12, 2008 #7 Share Posted April 12, 2008 Royal Caribbean also has these rules, and are even tightening those up over the next year. I hope Princess jumps on board before October 1st as well. (my husband read the article and said that they said %90 of their passengers were non-smokers)

On our Diamond Princess Cruise in March they had two nights in the Casino that were smoke free and the place was empty. We were talking to a few card dealers and they said it is like that every time they have a smoke free evening.
LHP Posted April 12, 2008 #10 Share Posted April 12, 2008 That's what Carnival thought about their Paradise ship...it just didn't happen The Paradise was a completely different animal. It did not allow smoking anywhere on the ship. This is not what Celebrity is doing. Smoking will be allowed...just in fewer places...like Oceania who has been hugely successful. BTW< the Paradise never lost money....they simply did not make enough money. Their MARS were below the other ships and corporate expectations. It was also harder to book because even the smallest family reunion has a least one smoker and everyone knows that groups are the lifeblood of mass market cruise lines. That being said, had the Paradise used the Oceania model, they too would be hugely successful today.
scotty2 Posted April 12, 2008 #11 Share Posted April 12, 2008 It's like every rule they make. It isn't much good if they don't enforce it and people who smoke are going to smoke no matter what the rule is. IMHO

Since smoking was banned in the UK in July of last year pubs / bars have had a miserable time business wise with many of them closing down. This is not the only reason - the price of alcohol and the worsening economy has also played a hand but many folk who used pubs to have a drink also had a smoke. Now they stay home. Smoking is no longer socially acceptable in the UK PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT AN ANTI-SMOKER. I've been known to indulge in the odd ciggie. Don't think it would bother many in the UK if smoking was banned on cruise ships. The only place you can smoke here is either in your own home or on the street. It's also banned in Italy, France and Spain to name a few other European countries. Just a sign of the times. Ros
cruisePRN Posted April 12, 2008 #13 Share Posted April 12, 2008 I hope smoking in banned in all cabins and public places. We're going to sail on Azamara and they have only 2 outdoor smoking places which I can aviod. This is the way of the futrue thankfully.

Too much competition and can't take the hit target market wise. The chipping away will continue however.

They had a non smoking section at the Casino and there was hardly anyone there which is why the non smokers would come over to the smoking section. The Casino's on board have a wonderful ventilation system, no smoke lingering in the air. California is the same way, you can't smoke anywhere public. Your home, car or outside, that's it. I know the bartender at our favorite Mexican restaurant and he said that the ban has hurt the bar. There never was a seat available if you wanted to sit there until your name is called, and now you go in there and it's empty. I don't drink, so what if I said I think they should ban alcohol? It kills more people a year then smoking and it also is dangerous to others. Why people would be up in arms!!

happyscot Posted April 12, 2008 #18 Share Posted April 12, 2008 Agreed. How about this as an attempt to shut it down? Smoking is disgusting. People who smoke where they shouldn't are idiots. People who complain about people smoking where they are allowed to are idiots. Smokers (I am one) should be given very very small areas of the boat to smoke in, and should then be left in peace. If so, I won't complain about your noisy children. Deal? (Just don't make me eat the crab legs...). I'm going on a cruise with Princess round the Med in two weeks, and I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited. Got our Euros today. Already got dollars (casino winnings from last time). I'm going on a crooo-ooze. Hic. Puff. Host Caroline Posted April 12, 2008 #19 Share Posted April 12, 2008 Because this is the newest of the smoking threads and I think there may be at least one I have not found... I am closing this one. The discussion will I'm sure continue on the other thread(s) forever but as long as you can do it in a civil way it can become it's own country:D
