Time to cruise again?

'Was very glad to find this website, and especially you 55 plus folks! I cruised a bit back in the 80's and 90's with friends and then my husband. I'm now 65, single again ,and would love to get back on a ship, but I don't have a companion to travel with, and am very afraid of looking like a lost soul travelling alone. Are any of you in the same boat? (pun intended)

Hi...don't be afraid of travelling alone. I have done 4 and prefer it that way. The last one was 11 days and I met great friends who I have kept in contact with. Start off with a short weekend one or a 5 day to see if you can stand yourself and only yourself. I think that is the way you will ALWAYS go afterwards. I leave my hubby home with the dogs and he prefers it that way as well. Go and have a good time. I turn 62 and have my nose to the grind looking for another one to take this winter.

Thanks for the reply,Yellowbird; I really like your attitude! Do you have any suggestions about the big single supplements or do you just bite the bullet? Also, have you had a better singles experience on one cruise line over another?

See if you can talk a buddy into going with you! While a cruise is great, it's much more fun if you have someone to share it with!

And, if your friends are all "party poopers", then you're sure to meet others on the trip! Make sure you're seated at a larger table for dinner--lot's of potential friends there!

Our last cruise had a woman travelling alone--she ate with us several times, and by mid-cruise, we were sitting together at the pool, in the shows, etc...!

Mitts - do it!!

Except for two of my cruises the rest have been solo and my next two are solo too. I have always had a great time doing exactly what I want to do - no compromises! (How lovely and selfish is that!!!)

I love having company at dinner but other than that I am happy to spend the day just relaxing and reading. In the evenings I enjoy a drink before dinner and then a show or casino after dinner - with or without company - your choice.

Join the roll call for your cruise and you will already "know" people before you cruise.

Enjoy!

Hi Mitts....Another solo cruiser here who loves it that way. As for single supplements Holland America seems to have the best deal. They charge an additional 50% as opposed to 100% other cruise lines seem to charge.I have had satisfactory experiences with on-line discount sites and this will save several hundred dollars over booking directly with a particular cruise line.

One great thing about solo cruising is that your cabin will be plenty big and there is no waiting for the bathroom.

There is a Norwegian Shipping Company called Hurtigruten that travels up and down the Norwegian coast and it is my understanding that they do not charge extra for solo passengers. They are part working ship, part cruise ship. As well as taking tourists they also transport cargo and locals to & from the smaller towns along the Norwegian coast. Not for everyone but the scenery is out of this world. The round trip is 14 days but one can do one way or part way between any two ports on the route.

I say take the plunge and don't worry about being solo.
