rhelms Posted April 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2008 Can anyone tell me if this is walkable from the cruise ship pier? Looks like it is slightly cheaper to book this excursion direct but not sure if it is easy to get to from the ship. Thanks!
rjscott Posted April 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2008 It is a short walk to the train terminal from the dock.
Putterdude Posted April 21, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2008 Yes it is walkable but get over to the station as early as you can as spaces can be limited. Attached is a link to a Skagway map. The furthest walk is if you are the outboard ship on the Railroad Dock however we are speaking of blocks. http://www.skagway.com/citymap.html

Toyz711 Posted April 21, 2008 #5 Share Posted April 21, 2008 if you call or try to book online, usually, they will tell you that it has to be done through the cruise ship (for the normal 3 1/2 hr round-trip). the trains, for each cruise, will be right at the different docks. you can try going to the depot, the day you are there, and seeing if tickets are available. Budget Queen Posted April 21, 2008 #6 Share Posted April 21, 2008 From the farthest docks, Ore, or last spot on the Railroad dock, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. There is the SMART bus at the dock, if there are mobility limitations.
greener Posted April 21, 2008 #7 Share Posted April 21, 2008 what is the smart bus?
jbh7 Posted April 21, 2008 #8 Share Posted April 21, 2008 When we did this 2 years ago, the price difference between the cruise tour and going independently was minimal. If still true - I recommend you book thru the cruise. They have separate cars that will pick you up right at the pier and take the cruise passengers on their own trip. that way you also don't risk any delays with getting back! The bus is a local bus that drives from the pier to the town for a small fee.
rhelms Posted April 22, 2008 Author #9 Share Posted April 22, 2008 Thanks for the information. I think you guys are right. Probably best to book through the Ship.
Mid-Age Posted April 22, 2008 #10 Share Posted April 22, 2008 Good choose. No risk.
FLNY Posted April 23, 2008 #11 Share Posted April 23, 2008 We also checked on booking the train ourselves and found the prices about the same as what the ship was charging - ended up booking through the ship.
rjscott Posted April 23, 2008 #12 Share Posted April 23, 2008 We booked this trip thru Chilkoot Charters rather than the ship. Yes, the price difference was small, but the attraction of Chilkoot over the ship's excursion was being in a small group rather than on a coach bus of 40+ passengers. We were able to stop at overlooks and scenic spots that the buses had to cruise on past, either because of parking constraints or the logisitics of getting 40 people off and back on the bus. Greener, good question and I have no answer. I ended up calling them. The rail and bus combo was what we did and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day, even tho' we had rain on and off. Just booked the 7 hour combo with Chilkoot for this August and the total (with tax) is $174.30/per person.
