I picked up Bonine at WalMart for a couple of bucks. Just pickup a nondrowsy version, but be aware that it can cause drowsiness. As a result, take it at night that way you'll be drowsy when you're sleeping anyway. You'll also need to start taking it the night before your cruise to be fully protected. If you wait until you feel sick, it'll be too late. gigivic Posted April 13, 2004 #28 Share Posted April 13, 2004 I took Bonine before my cruise started, still got sick, took phenergan tablets and still was sick for 24 hours in my cabin. Finally went to the ship doc who said I had overdosed on Bonine. He gave me a shot of phenergan and told me never to sail without it. I now also have the supositories in case. I will probably still call my PCP for the patch and see what he recommends. Still love crusin' though. "monica" Posted April 13, 2004 #29 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Let me preface with, I am prone to motion sickness. A whole patch is too much for my system so I cut one in half for me and my hubby to share. Wearing the whole patch made me feel like I was on drugs. Be sure to put it on a day before you board the ship. I also wear the wrist bands while I sleep...and sleep like a baby. Hope that suggestion helps! girlzillla Posted April 14, 2004 #30 Share Posted April 14, 2004 OP, you might want to check the package and make sure it is safe for your 6 year old to take. I remember looking for sea sickness meds for my kids and all the packages I looked at said over 12 only. I took the sea sick pills from the purser's desk and they never made me sleepy. w&k Posted April 14, 2004 #31 Share Posted April 14, 2004 Triptone is what we Florida divers use - it will bring you back once you are already barfing, but can be hard to find. Smooth seas to you! cruzntori Posted April 14, 2004 #32 Share Posted April 14, 2004 i took dramamine on first cruise which knocked me out and after first night of first cruise said i would never take it again. I was fine for rest of first cruise and 2nd with out the dramamine. but then our 3rd cruise was on mariner in feb and had bad rough sees as soon as out of port and got sick fast and realized i needed something and since dramamine was out in gift shop , the craps person in the casino told me to goto pursers desk and ask for mecklezine (not sure of spelling) where it is what the ship gives its employees where it dosent make people drowsy. Well like i saw what someone else posted above i thought it was a state of mind and waited to persue the meckalizine and went to dinner. at dinner i became so sick that i jumped up and ran out to pursers desk and took it and in 30 min i was up and running again. meckalizine is also known as bonin. it is normally given to people i understand that have vertigo , but in higher doses. oh yeah they just gave it to us. I got 2 packets of 4 each time and i took 1 little chewable pill a day. THANKS RCCL for not letting me have a yuck vacation! izzyvet Posted April 14, 2004 #33 Share Posted April 14, 2004
quote:
It is almost impossible to actually get seasick on a cruise shipunless you are in seas greater than 10 feet even to actually start feeling the motion.

That's what I thought, until I went on my first cruise. I am NOT prone to motion sickness. I can read in a car, fly, do all the rides at amusement parks (makes my husband mad). So it didn't even enter in my mind that I might become seasick on our cruise. What an awful feeling, I puked my guts out the first night. It actually took a while to realize what was going on. Went to the purser's desk, got the meclizine and for the rest of the cruise I was fine. So I only get seasick on cruise ships. Weird, maybe it's all mental, but now I wear the seabands if I start feeling it. (on my last cruise I didn't need anything until the third day, when it got a little rougher) and I'll take Bonine without hesitation when that little motion sickness headache starts. And yes, keeping your stomach full helps, having a balcony cabin and keeping the door fully open helps (fresh air and view of the horizon) and I also take the Ginger capsules. (maybe they help, but they at least they don't hurt) Bonine does not make me sleepy, but it is a drug and drugs have side affects, so it may cause drowsiness in some I'm sure. 2CruiseNow Posted April 14, 2004 #34 Share Posted April 14, 2004 Since I did not get sea sick on my first 2 cruises I thought it would never happen to me. Boy, was I wrong!! We were in some pretty rough seas last month on the Navigator and I started feeling pretty bad. I took some Dramamine and within 1 hr I started feeling better. AND I never felt drowsy. So, for the rest of the cruise I took Dramamine every morning before breakfast and did not have any more problems. I also agree keeping food on your stomach helps! :-) 2 Cruise Now Navigator 3/13/04 Voyager June, 2003 Explorer May, 2002 Cruising to Fun!
Rare xpcdoojk Posted April 14, 2004 #35 Share Posted April 14, 2004 They will generally give you bonine at the pursers desk for free if you ask, saying you are feeling or someone in your group is feeling a little sea sick. jc
