Wow.. Oasis of the Seas

Recommended Posts

Who knows I may end up sailing on this ship out of curiosity or if a group of friends wants to. but....

I sailed on the Voyager, and she was a beautiful mall, oops I mean ship. She was very impressive in scale. Throughout the cruise I felt as if something was missing, but didn't think much of it, until I got home and thought "that didn't feel much like a cruise". When in the interior of the ship there was a definite disconnect with the sea, it felt very closed in. Don't get me wrong, I had a nice time, but I am not rushing back for more especially with their prices.

I really like the more traditional ship design, I like the connection with the sea.

I am sure that RCI has created what customers want. Heck we have outdoor malls that look very very similar to the renderings of these ships and they are always busy, so I guess that this is just giving some people more of what they want.

I think it will definitely be a good compromise for families where some people love cruises, while other family members prefer land vacations. I'd love to try this out just to see what it was like. I would probably also come home with the same feeling, that something was "missing" - but at the same time, there would also be many other really cool things to see and experience that you won't find on a Carnival Ship. Heck, we felt that way on the NCL Spirit - and went rushing right back to Carnival!

I'll be very interested to see how the lower category cabins are priced.

Well I am a veteran cruiser and I think it's awesome!! All cruise ships are floating hotel/casinos/resorts.... please:rolleyes: They all are getting bigger and better IMO. There is something for everyone on this ship. No one says you have to do everything or anything....

Gee I wonder if this were a Carnival design the opinions would be different;)

One of the best areas on the ship.

When you read the press release about it, it shows just how much will be going on in this area.

Aqua Theatre: ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL TAKES CRUISE SHIP ENTERTAINMENT TO NEW LEVELS WITH AQUATHEATER

Miami, June 18, 2008 – With its Broadway-style stage shows, the first and only ice show at sea, and lively parades leading down the center of its ships, Royal Caribbean International is known for remarkable performances in spectacular venues. In its latest innovation, the progressive cruise line introduces AquaTheater, an impressive outdoor venue at the stern of the world’s largest ship, Oasis of the Seas. Located off the ship’s Boardwalk neighborhood, this amphitheater-style space will celebrate water with a full spectrum of activities and performances throughout the day and into the night with a backdrop of the ocean across the horizon. The first of its kind, AquaTheater will be a complete sensory experience that plays on the element of surprise, as the latest technology and design features amaze guests.

Created to offer two unique environments, guests will be able to swim in the theater’s magnificent kidney-shaped pool, relax on sun loungers located on tiered platforms surrounding the pool, and even participate in SCUBA lessons in the afternoon. At night, audience members witness the venue come alive with heart-pounding performances which feature dramatic acrobatics, synchronized swimming, water ballet, and high-diving performances, as well as fountain shows synchronized to music and lights.

AquaTheater Fast Facts

AquaTheater Pool

The largest and deepest freshwater pool at sea will be 21.9 feet (6.6 meters) by 51.6 feet wide (15.7 meters), with a depth of 17.9 feet (5.4 meters)

Fitted with three stage machinery devices, the pool’s depth will rise or fall to meet the needs of each performance and for its various functions throughout the day

Three custom lifts built into the pool will allow for intricate and multilevel performances

Underwater cameras will film performers and project images onto two giant Barco® LED screens that will flank the stage

Water Show Performances

Throughout the evenings, the AquaTheater pool will come alive with beautiful choreographed fountain shows, amid hundreds of water nozzles – some with capabilities of shooting water 65 feet (20 meters) high – programmed to music and lights

A giant trampoline will be centered between two diving towers allowing gymnasts and aerialists to flip and dismount into the pool

The diving tower will include two spring boards and two 10-meter high dive platforms

A bridge connects the two high dive boards which can support an entire row of divers. On the underbelly of this bridge will be lights and nozzles that allow for water to fall like a curtain down into the pool below

A trapeze will hang behind the high dive boards to give the appearance that trapeze artists are climbing the curtain of water

When she launches in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world. An architectural marvel at sea, she will span 16 decks, encompass 220,000 gross registered tons (GRT), carry 5,400 guests at double occupancy, and feature 2,700 staterooms. Oasis of the Seas will be the first ship to tout the cruise line’s new neighborhood concept of seven distinct themed areas, which includes Central Park, Boardwalk, and the Royal Promenade. The ship will sail from her home port of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Additional information is available at www.oasisoftheseas.com.

Ya' know, that video just reinforces my thought that Royal doesn't provide the kind of experience I'm interested in. What struck me was the emphasis on the interior of the ship. If I counted right I only saw three shots of the exterior of the vessel. Pretty much everything else revolved around the Boardwalk. I don't need a mall on my cruise.

The one feature that I did find impressive was the amphitheater at the aft end of the ship. It invites views of the sea that the rest of the ship seems to avoid.

Just my $.02...

I agree completely.......If I wanted to vacation in a shopping mall I'd go to the one up in Canada......and I might get physically ill, if I woke up to the sound of a lawn mower down in Central Park!!!!!

I never thought that I'd like a ship with all that 'stuff'...still don't think I really care to see it all on a cruise ship (all that Royal Caribbean-bring-the-feel-of-land-to-the-ship-stuff). The largest ship I've sailed so far, has been only about the 90,000 ton size...which I guess is now mid size.

BUT

I refuse to say never.

One day I might try it. if the price was right to book it, I certainly would. Until I actually DO get on a ship like that, I'll hold back any negative comments....except this one ;) Il think disembarking at ports and at the end of the cruise has GOT to be a nightmare on something that holds that many people.

BUT...you just don't know until you try it.

I love the unique features that will be offered on this ship! It seems to be offering something for everyone. After having been on so many cruises I have to admit I'm getting a little bored with the traditional layout on most ships. I look forward to more innovation in the cruising industry:)

i hear ya Liz and Im sure you will enjoy it. however please tell me. why would you invest in such a great ship and then sail it to the crappiest ports. Even thou this ship seems to be the destination my theory is.... lets put this in the western/eastern where everyone has been a million times and that way we can make a killing on the ship to pay for this billion dollar bill after we charge them an arm and a leg to get on it.

I have nothing against this ship at all its just the size is not to my liking. why didnt they think to do some of this on the Freedom or the liberty.

I guess we wait until Sept 3 to see what the pricing is.

gosh i really cant wait for the first reviews to come out for the folks that are going. for me no plans are changing just yet for 09/10

For me in particular the ports dont matter too much. I have always said the ship is the destination and the people I meet and have fun with are more important than the actual ports :D

Infact I am just in chat just now with some of our CC group and we were just saying...we would be happy not to get off in any ports :D because the ship looks totally amazing :D

I can't even fathom all the things I just watched. An ampitheater? A fortune teller? Good lord, it a gargantuan machine.

I really don't know that Carnival could (or should) come close to topping that with a 130,000 ton ship unless they were to find Elvis and have him skipper the thing.

I see both sides of the argument. Carnival has certainly been conservative with their ship designs since they built Destiny. It may be a good thing, since there are many who value their more traditional ship layout. Maybe Dream will be a whole new design, maybe not. Hopefully we'll find out soom.

It wouldn't make any difference to me if it was Carnival....I'm not even very thrilled about the size of the Dream, but at least it is still keeping it's focus on external ocean views.

I don't think bigger is better. They may be getting taller, but they're not getting much longer so that just means more congestion in the public areas.

If Carnival never built anything but more Conquest class ships I'd be perfectly happy

I think everyone cruises for different reasons, we cruise for the ports foremost, and then pick a nice ship that goes where we want it to. I'm not knocking the new ship, it looks amazing, if that's what you're into, but for us, the ports suck... really, could the western itinerary get any worse? but what are they going to do? there's not many places that they can cruise to, nor are there that many islands than can handle or want that kind of passenger count. I do hope though that RCI provides some kind of balance for a bit of tranquility with the other areas of the ship yet to be revealed, because right now, it really does look like vegas on water and only a certain percentage find that appealing. I'm sure they'll reveal a few quieter areas to come.

I agree. I don't think veteran cruisers will find anything attractive about this ship other than it's "wow" factor. Don't think they'll get many of us onboard.... I know for sure I won't be on it....and I'll plan my cruises around the schedule of this monster. Glad they are alternating East/West....I can arrange my cruise accordingly.

I like the southern Caribbean better anyway.

They'd have to pay me to cruise in one of those balconies overlooking the carousel.

I am sorry to read so many posts from people who dont like the Oasis...but hey thats your choice and I fully respect that.

To be honest I will say...I am glad to hear some of you dont like her because that will leave cabins for those who cant wait to go on this beautiful amazing fantastic ship :D And, some of us are glad that this monster is geared to families with children.....will hopefully cut down on the little darlings running rampant on my future cruises.

Bring it on RCCL ....the Critters are waiting to book their cabins :D :D

Seriously, there is obviously a market for this kind of thing or else RCI wouldn't have built it. It really doesn't affect me one way or another....unless laws are passed that require me to sail on it. That's the only way I'd even come close to it, fer sure. And, it's really easy to avoid the ports where this thing will be...so, it's OK in my book for those who think it's really cruising.

Water shows, where will the whales and dolphins stay when they aren't performing?

My thoughts exactly! We were on Adventure of the Seas and it was all inside! I would have gone nuts if we didn't have a balcony to get outside. Our favorite place on the ship was Johnny Rockets because we could actually sit outside and see the sea! We're not pool people. We have been cruising on Princess for ten years, and are now trying Carnival for the first time. I'm glad to hear that Carnival cruisers like being AT SEA, and not AT THE MALL! :)

How'd you like to spend all that money for those high-priced "Aqua" suites or any cabin near that amphitheater?

Noise, 24/7....

Nah... y'all go and have a great time.....

It's not for me. I hate malls.

You should be in theater. Overly dramatic. Seriously what is the longest you were able to hold your breathe before your parents came rushing to your aid?
