isles1 Posted July 3, 2008 #26 Share Posted July 3, 2008 Not true. In the Diamond book, there are three match play coupons, each to be used on even money bets (in roulette). If you use each of the coupons, here are your theoretical results... 0 wins - lose $15 1 win - break even ($10 lost, $10 won) 2 wins - win $15 ($5 lost, $20 won) 3 wins - win $30 As you can see, using the coupons greatly increases your winning odds! It still does not negate the house edge, it just decreases it because the house is essentially making a $5 bet for you. But yes, matchplays help to tilt the odds slightly away from the house and towards the player, which is why if you play anyway, you should make use of matchplays. The expected value of a $5 matchplay is roughly $2.60 for even money roulette bets (any basic gambling book explains the reasoning behind this). If matchplays presented an overall detriment to the casino, they would not be issued. Like any coupon, they are designed to get people in the door and spend (or lose) money. So I do not buy your argument.

No, it does more than DECREASE the house edge. Using the coupons gives the player a decided advantage.
Merion_Mom Posted July 3, 2008 #28 Share Posted July 3, 2008 I think that I will take all of my unused coupons from all previous cruises on my next cruise. Then I will have myself covered with 'airbrushed tattoos' from head to toe. :D :D :D :D :D
Dphipps2 Posted July 3, 2008 #29 Share Posted July 3, 2008 Just back from Radiance and had several bar coupons, casino coupons left over. Asked my state room attendant if I could leave them for the next couple. He told me to just put them in the safe with a note for the next couple and that he would be sure they see them. I figure if they give coupons, who cares if I use them or if someone else uses them.

isles1 Posted July 3, 2008 #33 Share Posted July 3, 2008 No, it does more than DECREASE the house edge. Using the coupons gives the player a decided advantage.Admittedly, I misspoke. What I should have said was that you still will lose an even money bet about half the time, regardless if you are using the matchplay. But yes, in mathematical terms the matchplay does take away the normal 5.26% house edge on a roulette bet. Using a matchplay is a rare opportunity for the player to actually have the mathematical edge. The point here is that a coupon would not be issued if it were not intended to be used by potential customers. My money is no worse than the next guy's. Agreed and it is also a good reason to always use the matchplay coupons. Since they can only be used on blackjack and roulette, a novice gambler can go to a roulette table and ask how to use them. Not all that hard! (and hope that green does not come up!)
Cuizer2 Posted July 4, 2008 #35 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Some of them have bar codes on them.....will they scan them and catch me trying to use old ones? :D That would be very embarrassing. If you think that is embarrassing, wait until the next day when your picture shows up on page three of the Daily Compass and the caption reads that you tried to use a coupon from a prior sailing. That is when it will get embarrassing. :o
