jrcooper Posted July 4, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Does anyone know if there is a post office, UPS Store, FedEx, or any other service to ship a package from Whittier? We will be returning from an Asian cruise May 16,2009, and plan to purchase quite a bit of "stuff" while on the cruise. We want to find a way to ship some of it home so we won't have to worry with it when we fly home. We had planned to ship it from Anchorage before we fly out a couple of days after we get off the ship, but we understand that most transfer shuttles, trains, etc. from Whittier to Anchorage only allow two bags per person, and we will have more than that. If anyone knows of any shuttles or other means of transportation that do not have luggage limits from Whittier to Anchorage, please share!! Any advice would be appreciated! jan
trooper 1 Posted July 4, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Does anyone know if there is a post office, UPS Store, FedEx, or any other service to ship a package from Whittier? Yes. There is a post office in Whittier. The name of the postmistress is Suzanne. I think the P.O. was (is?) in the Buckner apartment building. (That biggest building in Whittier, a few blocks from the cruise terminal.) Not positive anymore but most governmental offices are there.
neecee23 Posted July 4, 2008 #3 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Here is a link for directions to the Whittier Post Office. http://www.switchboard.com/usps.1355/dir/detail.htm?&&ypcobrand=1355&sd=100&S=AK&T=whittier&sortOrder=&sortBy=Distance&cntLongitude=-148.686799&listingPagination=0&CID=1222&zoom=0&cntLatitude=60.7728&navigatorChoices=&where=whittier%2C+AK&recordid=Business|19444567&frompage=CategoryID&showsection=1 FYI the PO has two sizes of flat rate boxes that you can pick up at the office to ship your items. These cost $9.80 to ship anywhere in the US. Sizes are 11"X8.5"X5.5" and about 13.625"X11.275"X3.375". There are other sizes available also but not at a flat rate. PennyAgain Posted July 4, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 4, 2008 The larger flat rate box costs more to ship. Those prices are for shipping within the United States. Shipping overseas costs a great deal more.
thinfool Posted July 4, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Any advice would be appreciated! jan Do a one-way car rental (Avis, I think) from Whittier to Anchorage. That way you can carry out your original plan.
ARRTrain Posted July 4, 2008 #6 Share Posted July 4, 2008 Buckner is the abandoned building. Begich Towers (BTI) is the tall building where almost everyone lives. The Post Office is the 1st floor and is open Mon - Fri I think you arrive on a Sat. Your best bet is probably the Airport Post Office in Anchorage. If you live in Whittier please tell the postmistress, Suzanne, hello from Charley Weller's niece in Spokane.
jrcooper Posted July 5, 2008 Author #8 Share Posted July 5, 2008 Renting a car was our original plan, but we were told that it is too early in the season to get one. Is this true? (May 16) jan
Podie Posted July 5, 2008 #9 Share Posted July 5, 2008 There is a Post Office in 99.9% of the towns in the U.S., including Alaska. Saturday hours are limited, however. I'm sure the Anchorage Airport office is a 24 hour facility. The flat rate boxes are good within the U.S. including Alaska. Parcel post will take an extra couple of weeks but will be cheaper. FedEx, UPS, and other alternate delivery service will definitely be more expensive. Yes, I'm a Postal employee, but these are facts:)
gazingm42 Posted July 5, 2008 #10 Share Posted July 5, 2008 The shuttle we took from Whittier 2 weeks ago did not have a limit on the carry ons. If you use the cruise shuttle it may be the case. We don't care using the cruise shuttles ourselves. They are normally about 2 x the price you pay booking shuttle yourself. Plus you get smaller shuttles and don't feel like cattle being transfered. There many many places in Anchorage to mail depending on where you plan on staying.
