Lost checkbook..Mariner

I found a checkbook in the safe of our Grand Suite on the Mariner on our cruise last week. I turned it in to Guest Services before we even left port. If this checkbook belongs to you, Royal Caribbean has it.

 

You should try posting this on the Meet and Mingle for that cruise.

Hopefully Royal Caribbean will take the initiative and mail it to them. I just wanted to post it so the owners would know that it is in the possession of Royal Caribbean in case they tried to tell them it hadn't been found.

Im kinda curious why you didn't just take the checkbook with you and mail it to the owners yourself or at least mail it back to the bank listed on the checks. I really dont think I would have handed it over ro RCCL sometimes you just aren't sure what they would do with it and I know it wouldnt be mailed from the ship staff but on the other they could have. I myself would have felt more comfortable putting it in a safe place with me and mailing it to them myself or if there was a phone on there I would have called to let them know you found it and will mail it to them when you reached home.

Same here! I don't think RCCL will mail the checkbook. I found a wallet at a resort once and my nephew and I turned it into the Front Desk, I regret that decision ever since. I should have just used the house phone and called the owner.

 

OP - just because you and I are honest doesn't mean that everyone is, unfortunately.

I thought about calling them, but there was no phone number on the checks. I also didn't want to keep them in my possession the entire time on the cruise in case these people had already contacted RCCL and were waiting for a response on if they were found. I really didn't expect to be bashed regarding the way we decided to handle the situation. I only intended on letting the people know on these boards in case they frequented them. We played out the different scenarios and decided turning them in to the proper authorities in charge of the ship was our best option.

You did the right thing in turning the checkbook in to guest relations.......don't let these people cause you to doubt your actions.

 

 

Agreed, it is ridiculous to suggest otherwise. It isn't your responsibility to carry around someone else's checkbook for the entire cruise and then pay to have it mailed back to them..

 

If you held on to the checkbook for the entire cruise instead of turning it in, someone might actually get the wrong idea and think you were planning on keeping it.

I agree with this statement totally. I would have done the same thing as the OP. It is not always proper to take things into your own hands. I am sure the OP weighed all the options and in my opinion made the best choice under the circumstances.

I would have turned it into guest services, I do not think that I would have wanted the responsibility of having someones checks with me all week and then having to mail them.

 

Do alot of people bring their checkbooks on cruises with them? Not something I would think I would need on a cruise.

Op - You did exactly what you should have done. The passenger that lost it might have already called RCCL to try and find it and Miami might have e-mailed the ship to see if anyone turned it in prior to closing the account. You did EXACTLY what you should have done. Those people telling you that you should have kept it and mailed it yourself are 100% WRONG. Great job and it was great that you were trying to notify the guest that lost it in the first place.

OP I totally agree with those who agree you were right to do what you did. I did check to see if there was a M&M for the previous cruise but couldn't find one to post there.

 

I would be very disappointed in RCCL if they drop the ball on this one.

Here here beee, you totally did the right thing, what if it got lost while you had it, what if they didn't get it after YOU mailed it! You did it the right way, no one should suggest otherwise!

I am always surprised about the things I have heard found in the staterooms/safes.

 

On a recent repo cruise we found a cell phone in the safe (I was surprised the people forgot it, but it was just by the lip of the safe at the door.) And also on that cruise we found a gold bracelet that had obviously had fallen off between the bed and the night stand.

 

Both were turned into the Purser's desk.

No one "bashed" you, we were just giving you our opinion that not everyone is honest. RCCL doesn't have a lost and found, everything left behind is usually donated. Believe me you will know when you are really bashed ;)

Okay, a bit sarcastic. Do not think my wife or I have carried a checkbook in 10, maybe 15 years. I think we write maybe 5 checks a year. All credit cards or online payments these days.

wow good point I didn't even think about that. I rarely use checks and I would never even think of bring a check let alone a check book on a crusise, maybe they paid their tips with it? Maybe spouse was trying to hide how much money they were spending in the casino!! :eek:

I feel you did the right thing, but the whole situation is probably moot at this point anyway. Once it was discovered the checks were missing, a stop pay was probably promptly put on those checks - at least that is what I would have done so it wouldn't matter if I got them back or not.

Thank you for the posititve feedback regarding our decision to turn in the checkbook to guest services. As many of you stated, we did not want to be responsible for carrying around a checkbook for our entire cruise that belonged to someone else. Also, we had already thought that the owners of the checkbook probably already closed the account upon realizing the checkbook was missing. I, too, wondered why someone would take a checkbook on a cruise. I know guest services will cash a check for you if you need money, but that's the only reason I could think of.

On a previous cruise, I left a diamond ring in my cabin. It had fallen off the night stand docking that morning and I didn't realize I hadn't put it on until I was driving up the hwy. Getting anyone at RCCL on the phone on Sunday morning was terrible. recordings, etc.. I called the Port of Galveston and they were SUPER. The port personnel and the RCCL employees there communicated my lost article to the ship, the Cabin Steward took extra time and found the ring and the port called me and mailed it back. So, there are honest people out there and luckily I found them in Galveston and on the Rhapsody. Yes, I got to see my steward again and gave her a giant hug and a reward for finding my ring. LRSkier
