cruisersfromoz Posted July 8, 2008 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2008 I'm getting really excited about our upcoming Independence cruise and was hoping for some insight into the Sea Pass... - What size are the cards? Are they standard credit card size? - Do they have a barcode, a magnetic strip or ??? - I understand they don't come with a hole but if we need one we can get it punched at the pursers desk, is that right? - Can anyone tell me more about the CC Beach Safe? Can it only fit a card or could we squish a Cruise Compass (maybe just the days events) and a pen in as well? - When we order a drink do we have to hand our card over, sign for the purchase...? What's the process? - And this is probably a really silly question but the Sea Pass is our room key as well, right? I've only been on Australian P&O around the South Pacific so this is all different for me!

Sue L Posted July 8, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 8, 2008 Now I am intriqued, what is a beach safe??? It is a little plastic case on a cord that will hold things and it is waterproof. They come in many sizes.
Luna Posted July 8, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 8, 2008 Your beach safe will hold multiple cards and maybe the day's events from the Compass. I don't think it'll hold a pen. You should bring a rubber band to wrap around it as they've been known to open up on their own in the water. I was once wearing one while snorkeling and was carrying both my sister's and my cards. I'd never realized it, but those cards are nearly the same color as the sand! Fortunately I had been in fairly shallow water when they opened and (against Murphy's Law) they both landed right side up so they were pretty visible. It will hold a smaller size pen, the kind that RC sometimes gives out at a M 'n' M with a little around-the-neck memo pad thingie. It will definitely hold one cruise compass folded to fit. A beach safe is also known as a water wallet, and it looks like this:
greeneng Posted July 8, 2008 #7 Share Posted July 8, 2008 I just put it in a zippered pocket of my bathing suit. It won't be hurt by water. I put currency in there also. I can then tip in cash if I need to. You would be surprised how fast a US bill will dry. Within minutes when laid out flat on a towel. Jim

THe magnetic stripe is used when you enter your room and when they swipe the card for purchases. The Barcode is scanned when you get on and off the ship. cb at sea Posted July 8, 2008 #11 Share Posted July 8, 2008 It's just like a creditcard--waterproof plastic! You don't really need to keep it dry!
cruisersfromoz Posted July 9, 2008 Author #12 Share Posted July 9, 2008 Thanks for your responses. My question about the beach safe wasn't regarding its waterproof-ness. I'm looking for something small and lightweight that we can carry around with us during the day that can hold our sea pass card, a Compass, a pen and maybe a little cash. I don't want to have to carry and watch a handbag all the time. We'll use a day pack during shore excursions. Does anyone know where can I get a Beach Safe? Will Cruise Critic ship to Aust? DDF Posted July 9, 2008 #13 Share Posted July 9, 2008 Can the sea pass be used to gamble in the casino...can you cash in and have the amount charged to your sea pass or do you need to have cold, hard cash?

FloridaPalms Posted July 9, 2008 #15 Share Posted July 9, 2008 A tip to all - the RCCL sea pass is very sensitive to magnets. I learned this first hand. On formal night, I had two of our passes in my clutch bag which has a magnetic closure. I never gave it a second thought until they wouldn't work to let me back in our stateroom. When RC issued the replacements, they mentioned magnets and the light in my head went on. DUH! :o

Many/most office supply stores carry badge holders, and some of these have a zippered pouch. This is what I use (I got it when attending a trade show some years back). It has a string to go around my neck, and it has a place for my card, and the pouch can hold my (small) reading glasses, hand sanitizer, and the activity list from the daily newsletter. A few years ago, I forgot to bring it on my cruise (yikes!), and bought another one in the ship's store. It happened to be Celebrity, but maybe RCCL offers them too. linkerbink Posted July 9, 2008 #18 Share Posted July 9, 2008 Thanks for your responses.... Does anyone know where can I get a Beach Safe? Will Cruise Critic ship to Aust? You can order one right here on the CC website. Just go to the "CC Logowear" link in the light orange bar near the top of the page. They sell for $5.95. I don't know if they ship to AU...you could probably find out easily enough. I got one (got a CC credit for my birthday!) and it's a nice size.
