soda from fountain with soda card?

I always purchase the soda card on other cruise lines since I drink quite a bit of it. It also slows down my alcohol consumption. :o I only purchased the card once on Carnival because whenever I ordered a soda, they gave it to me in a can (along with a glass of ice), which they touted as being "better" than the bar guns. I didn't like the taste, and vowed to never order on a Carnival cruise again. At home, I get the 2-liter bottles. I don't know why, but I don't like the soda from a can. Somehow it tastes different. The other cruise lines always use the gun in the bar, and that tastes ok. On my last few Carnival cruises, I have really upped the alcohol consumption without the possibility of substituting soda. I don't care for iced tea and don't drink the lemonade due to the sugar.

Several CC's say they bring some of their own soda on board, but I don't think it would be very easy to manage some 2-liter bottles. I don't know why I didn't think to ask the last time, but has anyone ever asked the bartenders for (and received) soda out of their gun instead of a can when they ordered?

I have never seen a gun at any of the bars on any of the Carnival ships I've been on. When I asked for a mixed drink, the mixer is from a can, that's all they have.

No guns, just cans!! Insulated cups can be purchased from any bar. A suggestion, wait until you leave port otherwise you will pay TAX!!:(

so you have to pay extra for the cup??doesnt come with card???the people who we know that go on Rcc said they get theirs when the purchase card. How much more is the cup????

Thats why RCC costs more than Carnival - you get an insulated cup :p

Just bring one from home...

No guns onboard the ships. Cans only.

As far as bringing 2 liters, how about roll-wrapping them in pairs of jeans or dockers and then just pack then with the luggage?

Anyone packing sodas in checked or ported onto the ship luggage...

Just be sure that you either give them time to "settle" or be sure to open the first ones over the sink in the bathroom...

Otherwise - ppssssfffffftttttt!

Champagne bottles don't spray that high!;)

You got the whole can? The times we've purchased the soda card, all they do is load a cup with ice and then open a can (or use what they've already opened) and fill until the fizz reaches the top. You're lucky if you get a 1/2 cup of drink! Then, they get frustrated with you when you ask for another..............not the best deal, IMHO! Carry yours on - either bottles or cans, you're sure to get the most for your $$

I asked the waiter about all those cans of soda. He told me that they get money back from the cans and that is why they use them. When they refill the ship every two weeks they load on over 50 pallets of soda. wow- thats alot of cans

No soda guns: bummer. Thanks for the info. I definitely will skip the soda on my Carnival cruise again. Too bad: I have four Carnival cruises booked (I want to be Platinum!) but two of them are just for weekends. I'll have to get my caffeine fix from coffee instead of soda. I like the idea for packing the 2-liters in my baggage, but it is always so full that I can't imagine how they would fit. Maybe I need to bring an extra bag just for the soda!

Thanks for the small soda bottle idea. The problem is that I drink a half liter at a time, so a little bottle would be like drinking out of a thimble.

yeah, carnival only uses canned sodas. i've never had anyone appear irritated when we order more sodas. several times on lido, we took our plates & sat at the bar, ordering as many sodas as needed. when we finished, we put our dishes on a dirty table so the bartenders wouldn't have to look at them. we waited until the 2nd day to purchase our cards - it saved us quite a bit, since we were buying 5 of them. funny, while we were buying them, a guy drinking at the bar told us just to buy a couple of them & take turns getting sodas. we bought our individual cards anyway - it's so much less of a hassle just for everyone to have their own.

I asked this question to a lot of Bar tenders on Carnival, the most consistent reply is that the Guns have a problem with consistency in syrup/water ratio. So if they use the cans, there is not a problem.

Now a big FYI. If you order your soda in the casino bar or lobby bar, (basically any bar that is located inside the ship and no access to a pool) you will get a real glass not plastic, the real glasses are taller and hold almost a full can of soda, the plastic cups don't.

You will also get a real glass in the dining room when you order your drink. A real good drink waiter will have your iced glass, and an unopened can of soda waiting for you before you arrive at your dining table.

Maybe bring a 12 pack of the small bottles.

That's what I was going to suggest...my husband has a bad diet coke addiction and hates the fountain gun soda. He also hates the Coke Light products found in other countries, so we always bring our own. We're bringing 3 12 packs and not buying a soda card this time.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just thought that I'd report back since I'm the one who started this thread. I took someone's suggestion and packed three six-packs of small plastic bottles of Coke Zero in my luggage. It was enough to get me through the cruise (at a reduced consumption level) and I didn't have to drink out of cans. Thanks for the suggestion.

RCCL rates are higher too. It's a trade-off....bring your own or buy one at the gift shop.
