Luv2CruiseOften Posted August 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 18, 2008  We are leaving on my first trip to Europe - 23 days. The excursion book has lots of long bus rides on their excursions. Not my idea of fun. Would not mind a train ride, but not long bus rides. Any suggestions for the following ports: Southampton Vigo Barcelona Monte Carlo Civitavecchia Gibraltar Lisbon Thanks for you help.
Rare Keith1010 Posted August 18, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 18, 2008 You can easily see places such as Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Gibralter and Lisbon on your own. If you enjoy walking these are nice cities to walk around on your own. Go to something like frommers.com and read about some of the attractions in each city. For Gibralter you can walk off the cruise ship and in about ten minutes you will be in the town. If you want to go to the top of the rock you can book this through your cruise ship or when you get off the ship there will be lots of vans with drivers who will take you up there. In Barcelona, the cruise ship is a short distance from the downtown area. Many cruise lines have buses that will take you say the five minute drive over there. In Monte Carlo there are lots of attractions in walking distance from the Cathedral to the Palace to the Grand Casino to the Ocean Museum to the Gardens. In Lisbon there are two ports; one is closer to the city center. Once you get over to the older part of the city there are lots of places to walk to. From Civitavecchia you could take the train into Rome or you could book an excursion through the cruise line. The port his about a 90 minute drive from the city center in a motor vehicle.
