novembre Posted September 3, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 3, 2008 We have booked a HAL cruise and requested the late seating, because we are accustomed to eating dinner about 9. We're also in the habit of a snack around 5:30 or 6, so my question is "Can we walk into the dining-room, or one of the other restaurants on board, and order just an appetizer at that time? Or perhaps a piece of cake and a cup of tea?" If not, is there anywhere that we can buy food that time of day? Nov
jtl513 Posted September 3, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 3, 2008 It will vary a bit by itinerary, but most of the time the taco/burger/hot dog bar and the deli/salad bar are open until 5:00p and then the Lido opens up fully at 5:30p. On Vistas (and I presume the Eurodam) you can get pizza from 11:30a until midnight. You can buy a coffee drink (maybe tea?) at the Explorations Cafe any time and get free pastry. And finally you can get free 24-hour room service with many kinds of snacks. Is that enough choices? :)
sue1898 Posted September 3, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 3, 2008 There is also the room service selection. We had smoked salmon and cheese plates during "attitude adjustment hour" many times.
eh2zed Posted September 3, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2008 We are similarly minded and order room service about 5 pm or so. No charge. Good selections.
GmaPajama Posted September 3, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2008 We find that the hot appetizers served in the bars before meals can be perfect for curing those little hunger pangs. Plenty tasty too! :)
quail26 Posted September 3, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 3, 2008 Thanks for this information. We also have the late seating for dining and would love to have some appetizers in our suite around 5:00 - 5:30. Does anyone have a copy of the room service menu? The salmon and cheese plates sound perfect. Also, can you please provide additional information on appetizers availabel in the bars. We enjoy martinis prior to dinner and would appreciate some appetizers.

Route6A Posted September 3, 2008 #10 Share Posted September 3, 2008 It is also possible to order room service from the dining room menu if you place the order within a specified time after the dining room opens. I forget the exact time limit. So, you could take a look at the dining menu for the evening, and order an appetizer from that menu for delivery at the time you wish....or anything else listed on the menu that evening. Dinner menus are posted outside the dining room and provided for passengers in deluxe veranda suites. There is also food in the Neptune Lounge all day for deluxe veranda suite passengers. I sometimes slip into the Lido for tea and a snack in the late afternoon if we are dining late.
sail7seas Posted September 3, 2008 #11 Share Posted September 3, 2008 If you are in a Deluxe Veranda or Penthouse Suite, you can ask the Concierge to have hot hors d'ouerves delivered to your cabin each afternoon. The are usually such things as meatballs, batter friend chicken pieces. salmon balls, bitterballen, used to be chicken wings but I don't recall seeing any lately, quiche........ The variety differs daily. There are normally at least two hot hors d'ouerves and some cold canapes.

willowoodf Posted September 4, 2008 #14 Share Posted September 4, 2008 Our favorite snack is the lido pizza/taco/burger/hot dog bar in the late afternoon. Last ship we were on they were open until 6 p.m. Perfect for that snack between lunch and late dinner! DH loves hot dogs with cole slaw (gotta get the cole slaw from inside the Lido) and I loved the pizza.. or was it the tacos... or was it those great cheeseburgers... or maybe a little bit of everything... Alexat2 Posted September 4, 2008 #15 Share Posted September 4, 2008 And finally you can get free 24-hour room service with many kinds of snacks. Is that enough choices? :) Trust me, you won't go hungry - you can always find food. For a laugh order the "grilled ham and cheese" from room service - they mean it literally... It's grilled ham on bread with cheese. (In the states anyway - the sandwich would be grilled, not just the ham....):D Lydia

quail26 Posted September 4, 2008 #17 Share Posted September 4, 2008 Thanks to everyone for all the great information including the room service menu. I really appreciate the idea about looking at the dining menu for the evening, and ordering an appetizer from that menu in our cabin with a cocktail. The appetizers in the bar also will be fine. Great help and thanks to all of you.

dvrdude Posted September 4, 2008 #20 Share Posted September 4, 2008 We find that the hot appetizers served in the bars before meals can be perfect for curing those little hunger pangs. Plenty tasty too! :) You got that right Gma! My favorite perk about being at a lounge about 6-ish. The appetizers are to die for! DW and I usually hang out in the ocean bar at that time. In our eexperience, once the bar staff know appetizers are appreciated, they keep them COMING! DW has an allergy to shell-fish, so alas, I'm forced to eat all the shrimp and scallops :( .
