Can you walk from the ship to Philipsburg ? How long of a walk is it? Is it a level paved walkway or is it dodging in and out of traffic to get into town?Where is the boardwalk? Can you safely walk along the boardwalk to and from the ship to Philiipsburg to shop? What can you safely walk to from the ship? Where exactly is the boardwalk in regards to the ship and Beach. is it near Great Bay Beach? I'm usually in a car and straight to mullet bay and back to the ship.

We would like to take in some shopping this time and get more familiar with the island in regards to shopping and eating.

Perhaps I could add here....what other things are there to do when one goes into Philpsburg except shop?

For just $6 (last, we were there)

they give you a bright orange wrist band thing to wear

that gets you a taxi-ride into Philipsburg, a ride back to the pier

and even a golf-cart ride out to the end of the pier,if you need it.

Overall, it's worth it.

Sure you can walk it, but it's hot

especially on the way back, with bags full of goodies :)

There are several shops in two? small bldgs. right at the base of the pier

here's a pic of my wife, "emerging victorious" from the blue-and-white china store..

We were in P-burg last January. I think the walk from the pier was about a mile, but we were told it wasn't an easy walk. We opted for the water taxi ride which was quick and around $6-7 round trip. We were given a wrist band, I think that may be what aplmac is referring to. It runs very frequently between the town dock and the cruise pier. As for beaches, there is a town beach, but we always head to Orient Beach :D:D so can't comment on the one in town, although my brother spent the afternoon there and had no complaints.

You can do the walk although most opt for the water taxi. I would agree with the poster that est. the distance at about a mile. They have also made improvements to the walkway from the pier to downtown area. It is a safe walk esp that time of the day.

Phillipsburg is located on in an area known as Great Bay. The water taxi will drop you in essentially the middle of town. If you opt to walk, you will start at one far end and walk towards the middle.

The downtown area has had major improvements over the past 5 years or so. There are many shops and restaurants. There are also a few casinos. Additionally, they have developed a "boardwalk" that runs parallel to Front Street (the main shopping area) between Great Bay and Front Street.

There are many things to do in St. Maarten besides shopping. Most things have been covered extensively in the St. Maarten thread. You might want to check there for ideas.

I wouldnt walk, a lot of traffic, narrow roads and probably some locals up to no good along the way. Best to take the water taxi.

I saw some of the craziest driving  I have ever seen in my life at St. Maartin (They really love their horns...alot) Take the water taxi by allmeans. The shops you see from your port are not Phillipsburg. It is a good distance. I think I saw shuttles going back a forth with cruisers also.

We walked it last December. There were sidewalks for most of the walk.

Some traffic, but not alot. Probably depends on the time of day. There were really quite alot of cruise passengers walking, so there were always alot of people around. I never felt the least bit unsafe.

I thought the walk was maybe 3/4 of a mile. Maybe its a mile if you start counting from the midway part of the boardwalk to the terminal. I'm not much of a walker and I found the walk to be very comfortable.

There's a grocery store with a good variety of food and misc. items at the end of the one street before you make the turn to go into the main section of the downtown area.
