elpam Posted September 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2008 We have booked 1/31/10, and are wondering whether it would be better to have a balcony on the port side or starboard? Seeing sea life is what matters most. The Specialist I spoke with today said the port side is most popular and what is recommended, but I welcome feedback, thanks! elaine
Rare tupper10 Posted December 31, 2008 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2008 We just gave up our CC aft cabin room so call right now and try to get it. That will give you the best view. Otherwise I think that you will be on deck for the 6 hours total that will be sailing by so you can see everything or if it is too cold in the upstairs bar/lounge with the glass windows. We just came back from the Millie in NZ and even though it was cold most of us were on deck to really see the sights as we sailed in and out of the sounds. Tia Serena Posted December 31, 2008 #3 Share Posted December 31, 2008 POSH - Port Out, Starboard home That had to do with cabins without heating of air conditioning leaving from London going to India and looking for the cooler cabin... Now a days I don't know if it really matters, as long as the cabin is well insulated. Icebergs and seals do not choose port or starboard to appear! So, it doesn't matter as you will end up being on one side of the ship and be on the other side of the ship coming back.
soraya Posted December 31, 2008 #5 Share Posted December 31, 2008 I wonder if the comment on port being popular has to do wiith the rest of the cruise rather than the Antarctic bit? I think the aft would be THE one to have. It is worth bearing in mind that you'll feel the movement more going through Drakes, but if the crossing is smooth it won't matter and if it's bad - it still won't matter! And then once you get there you'll have fab views. My recommendation for the balcony - take a Selkie bag with you and you can sit on your balcony all comfy.:) http://www.lippiselkbag.co.uk/
floridatravelersforlife Posted January 1, 2009 #6 Share Posted January 1, 2009 We are booked mid ship mid heigth on the 31 Jan cruise. Expect the worst, hope for the best. Hey Tupper 10 Did the Millie go into Milford Sound? How far in? MY DW and I did a one month land tour in NZ and took a overight cruise through Milford Sound on o100 passeger single masted boats. Did you see them? Driving around NZ was a blast. We did about 2200 miles!
Rare tupper10 Posted January 1, 2009 #7 Share Posted January 1, 2009 I don't really want to change the thread but yes the Millie did the Milford, Dusky and Doubtful sounds. Celebrity is not going next year - this is the last season for them in Australia/NZ. The deals to now are great so if you have the time it was well worth it. Rare Keith1010 Posted January 4, 2009 #8 Share Posted January 4, 2009 We sailed off Antarctica on another cruise line. It does not matter which side you are on. Also you will want to go up on deck and to other areas with large windows inside the ship to see all that is around you. Try to get a cabin that is mid ship.
