stevexy Posted September 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 28, 2008 If I join the cruise at the second port--is there a refund of port fees for the departure port? thanks (due to time I will start the cruise at the second port)
sail7seas Posted September 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 28, 2008 I would say probably not.
DAllenTCY Posted September 28, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Absolutely not. Depending on the port you also may be subject to a $400 per person fine. Beware. David
stevexy Posted September 28, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted September 28, 2008 the fine is for US port issues and the need to visit a foreign port. I am in Europe and already got approval from HAL. Just wondering if anyone else did this and whether they got port fees back.
ocngypz Posted September 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 28, 2008 No, you do not. What you are doing is what is called "down-streaming". You pay the full fare with port, tax and fuel as if you were embarking on the first day.
stevexy Posted September 28, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted September 28, 2008 thanks--one last question--how about the "life boat drill"? do you have a private session?
jtl513 Posted September 28, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 28, 2008 thanks--one last question--how about the "life boat drill"? do you have a private session? If you board early enough you may catch the "remedial" session for folks who skipped the first day. :)
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 28, 2008 #8 Share Posted September 28, 2008 No you will not get any port fees back for joining the cruise a day later than the other passengers.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 28, 2008 #9 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Yes -- they will make arrangements for you to attend a private lifeboat drill.
sapper1 Posted September 28, 2008 #10 Share Posted September 28, 2008 On our 26 day European, transatlantic next summer we will be stopping in Halifax on day 24 and then continuing on to NYC. In some ways it just makes sense, being 4 hours from home, while in Halifax, to jump ship there. Since we won't have visited any US ports would there be a problem with that? Flying to Saint John from NYC is a major big-time hassle--not to mention an added expense. We could rent a car in Halifax and be home for supper. Cruiseair uses Toronto as a gateway city and we would have to fly to TO before coming home. Privately, we would have to do Toronto or Montreal, which isn't much better. It makes sense to me, and I would bet that HAL would approve it ... but they may want you to still pay for the 4 nights that the cabin will most likely be empty ... and you would be losing 15% of your cruise time. Still, it might be worth it. Tough choice! :)

Still, it might be worth it. Tough choice! :) Having to pay is a given--never thought otherwise. We would only actually lose one sea day as the arrival in NYC is the next AM and we would be disembarking. Losing a day in Halifax is no problem as we are over there quite often anyway---we've got the T-shirt, so to speak.;) Is seeing the Statue of Liberty at 5AM worth the extra time, hassle and money? That's the dilemma.

You need to clear it with HAL ( obviously) but it most likely is fine for you to disembark in Halifax.

Tks---I thought it would most likely be OK. We would certainly clear it with HAL---wouldn't want to be "missing passengers". That would be good for a long thread !! It would also involve getting Canada Customs to clear us, personally, rather than just clearing the whole ship for a transit visit. They might not want to do it. sail7seas Posted September 28, 2008 #16 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Exactly. It's a very safe bet they would notice you lugging suitcases down the gangway and into the terminal in Halifax. Not only would HAL Security on the gangway have some questions, undoubtedly Canadian Officials may wish to chat with you as well.
Juanita462 Posted September 28, 2008 #17 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Our friends were on a Panama canal cruise with us which stopped in Victoria and then went on to Vancouver for disembarkation the next morning. they got off in Victoria - we all live on the Island - their daughter picked them up at the pier. So, it can be done. If we had known we would have done the same thing - saves having to come back by ferry the next day.

At least at that time, for that port, it was allowed.
