bug42362 Posted November 3, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 3, 2004 Hi! We are a family of 5, requiring us to book 2 cabins onboard our ship. I am wondering if there are any discounts for children if you book independent tours for the glaciers. If anyone knows please let me know, any other savings tips for families I would appreciate. Thanks
GoBucks04 Posted November 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 4, 2004 Looking forward to the answers myself-we are going to have 5 kids along. What ship are you on/dates?? Still waiting for MIL to decide. Maybe she'll make up her mind before all the ships fill up!
Host Caroline Posted November 4, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 4, 2004 I'm not sure re the glacier tours (Check with Coastal in Juneau?) but Larry at Orca Enterprises in Juneau has reduced rates on his whale watching tours (half price under 5 and about 1/3 off for others)
Budget Queen Posted November 4, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 4, 2004 Most helicopter glacier landings go full price- these flights are easily always full with waiting lists. The only discounts I know of are with TEMSCO on their glacier dog sledding. Best would be to contact the venders yourself and inquire- policies can change. http://www.coastalhelicopters.com http://www.temscoair.com
jlb49 Posted December 2, 2004 #5 Share Posted December 2, 2004 Hi Bug... We are on the same ship as you (saw you on the Who's going to Alaska thread). We have 6 going (two teenagers, us and two seniors), and are looking at different tour options as well. So far we are renting a van in Skagway, kayaking in Ketchikan and unsure in Juneau. I have tried to start a Roll Call...but no one has responded...I think it was posted this past Monday. Can't wait until June!
42trvl Posted December 2, 2004 #6 Share Posted December 2, 2004 Most of the excursions we did this past summer did offer discounts for children. Except for the train ride in Skagway, we booked them all ourselves well ahead of time. Interestingly, some offered discounts when booking on your own, but would not offer the discount when booked through the cruiseline. We preferred to book independently, so this was not a problem. Temsco was one that we used and at about half price, the discount was pretty significant for a couple of kids.
bug42362 Posted December 5, 2004 Author #7 Share Posted December 5, 2004 Hi JLB49....we only have plans for Ketchikan...we are using Northern Lights to go Salmon fishing, I think we'll probably do the train trip in Skagway, and maybe a flightseeing tour in Junuea. jlb49 Posted December 7, 2004 #8 Share Posted December 7, 2004 Hi Bug...how old are your kids? We are keeping an eye out on these boards for Juneau. Might do Capt Larry's...as my kids are not keen on doing a flightseeing tour...go figure!
bug42362 Posted December 8, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted December 8, 2004 My kids are 15,14, and 6, and I didn't really give them a choice on the flightseeing....we all go up or we all stay down!!! But they are excited about seeing the glaciers. My boys like to fish so the salmon trip in ketchikan has them satisfied.
StillLooking4Adventure Posted December 8, 2004 #10 Share Posted December 8, 2004 Budget queen is correct that Temsco give half price for kids if you book direct. If your kids are old enough the dog sled fight is one of the best and most exciting. We also purchased toursaver coupon books, 2 of them, to use for our family of four. One flightseeing trip paid for the book with the two free tickets. http://WWW.toursaver.com
lmmn Posted December 18, 2004 #11 Share Posted December 18, 2004 I went to their website and did not see TEMSCO listed. Does anyone know if there is a coupon for summer, 2005?
dianelevene Posted December 19, 2004 #12 Share Posted December 19, 2004 I also went to the toursavers website and looked at the list of coupons. I did not see any listed that would make it worth buying for us. Am I missing something?
lmmn Posted December 19, 2004 #13 Share Posted December 19, 2004 I emailed supersaver.com. No coupon this year for TEMSCO helicopter and dogsledding.
Budget Queen Posted December 19, 2004 #14 Share Posted December 19, 2004 For clairfication- there hasn't been a TEMSCO toursaver coupon for years. These flights go full price and always full. If this is a priority - book it and enjoy. Toursaver coupons are MOST useful for independent INTERIOR Alaska travelers. There are flightseeing coupons out of Talkeetna for McKinley (some can be upgraded for the summit flights).
dianelevene Posted December 22, 2004 #15 Share Posted December 22, 2004 I contacted TEMSCO directly. They said they charge the same fare for adults and children. I guess my kids will be staying in the kids' camp on the ship while we do some sightseeing. At 5 and 6 years old, I don't think they will remember the experience well enough to make it worth the amount of money it will cost to take them. lmmn Posted December 22, 2004 #16 Share Posted December 22, 2004 I just booked with Temsco yesterday. It was half price for my son. I thought I read somewhere that in Skagway they have childrens rates, Juneau they do not. I'd check it out.
dianelevene Posted December 22, 2004 #17 Share Posted December 22, 2004 Thanks for the information. I will check into that. It sure would save us a bunch! Then we can plan to spend that extra amount doing some other special excursion!
