Shanghai and Singapore hotel recommendations

Hi,

We are sailing on LotS next Feb. For those of you who have visited Shanghai and Singapore we are looking for hotel recommendations.

We've found plenty of hotels in Shanghai for under Oz $350 for three nights but Singapore looks like it is a different matter and we''ll be lucky to get three nights for under $450. We don't necessarily want anything fancy but would like wherever we end up to be within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife and most importantly public transport and it's not going to break the bank.

In Shanghai we were looking to stay near the Bund but our TA has said there's nothing there except the Bund (??) and recommended staying in the city centre.

In Singapore the recommendation is near Clarke Quay but the prices near there scare us :)

All responses are greatly appreciated.

I'll ask seperate questions about our ports of call.

Whatever hotel you choose in Shanghai make sure it is on the Puxi side where all the major sights are. The Pudong side is all business and though there are many hotels they are geared to the business traveler. There are many hotels on or near the Bund or Nanjing Road.

We're on LOS in April 2009 and have booked a room at the Novotel Clarke Quay. Close to restaurants and night life. Also walking distance to metro. One of the cheaper hotels in Singapore (but still not cheap:() We chose it based on Tripadvisor reports

We have stayed in Singapore on three different occasions at three different hotels. The Peninsula in Coleman Street is very close to the City Hall MRT and it is so easy to get around to main areas via MRT. From memory, it was just over a hundred for a double room. You can check details on Asia Rooms.com for more up to date info. We then stayed at the Miramar which is near Clarke Quay on the second visit. They have a shuttle into town or you can walk if you are really keen and the humidity doesn't bother you. There are buses there as well which are airconditoned and fun to negotiate. Our third stay was at the Allson which is part of the Singapore stopover hotels. It was fairly central, but not very soundproof.Someone checked in after midnight and put on the tv and we could hear everything. We are planning on doing a stopover next year and have decided to go with the Peninsula again because of its location to transport, shops and cheap food courts. All of these hotels have reviews on Asia rooms if you are interested in checking them out. Singapore is a great city to visit and take a city tour to orientate yourself. They are quite reasonable and can be organised through the hotel. Good luck:)

Hotel prices in S/Pore have gone through the roof Give the Peninsular and the Excelsior a miss there very run down, the Peninsulas nickname years ago was tarts are us. Check out, The Bayview hotel. a good budget hotel central to the metro and clarke key. I stayed here July last for three nights and would reckomend it price wise. Grumphy

Hotel Re in Singapore, lots over budget even with a hotelclub credit but looks good and Nanjing Hotel just off the pedestrian mall in Shanghai that ended up under budget. now if only that dollar of ours would start heading back up!

Singapore room rates are expected to fall in 2009 so I wouldn't be too quick to book rooms now. Singapore's also officially in recession so hotels will only be happy to fill their rooms even at lower rates. http://www.sias.org.sg/sites/sias.org.sg/CMS/File/singaporeInvestor/sectorwatchHotels080908.html

This articale is correct but the sing dollar is up against most currencys

it still means high hotel rates. the other hotel to check out is

The Traders Hotel its the sister hotel to the Shangrila Hotel it has a shuttle bus into Orchard rd. i have stayed here last June it has good rates and service plus massive pool.

I just returned from Singapore and stayed at the Sheraton Towers on Scott Road within walking distance of Orchard Road where all of the great shops and restaurants are. It is a beautiful hotel and we paid about $150 in US dollars.
