Station Pier in Melbourne, what is there?

We are traveling down to Melbourne soon on the PS (13 days, yay) and I would like to know is Station Pier like Portside in Brissy where you can have a coffee etc.

I have been told that the tram line goes direct to Station Pier as they have used the old trainline and it is only a short stroll accross the road.

I know there are few Melbournians we'd like to say hello to and thought that if there is a coffee shop that would be a great place to meet up! :D

Hi Glenda,

You will be able to find a coffee lounge, as well as a couple of up market resturants on Station pier, as well as a souvenir/gift shop, and all other facilities. And as you mentioned there is a tram service right at the end of the pier that will take you into the city if you want to catch up with people there instead of at the pier. I am not sure if you can meet people that are not on the cruise on the pier as it is normally closed to the general public when cruise ships are berthed at the pier. Might be best to check this out before making plans. I hope you enjoy Melbourne.

Hi Glenda,

I am in no way pretending to be Victorian. :)

We are visiting on Rhapsody in January, so have been screening through public transport links. This link will show the route map and timetables for the Port Melbourne tram:

http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/route/view/722

Geoff thanks for that, I have been doing a lot of finding out about transport too and thought this info might help you as well. I am actually hoping that this thread produces a lot of info.

The tram into Melbourne is the 109 and it stops at Spencer Street near where it turns into Collins Street for us where we can put luggage into lockers just near the skybus which goes out to the airport and Southern Cross Station whch is where you can catch a train to rural Victoria and also it is one station away from Flinders Street.

It will be $3.50 for a two hour ticket and $6.50 for a 6 hour ticket, zone one. Make sure you have change for the ticket machine.

But when in Melbourne there is also the city circle tram that does the major tourist spots and it is free. I still say anyone going to Melbourne should go to Federation Square, I love it and the art. Or a Carriage ride on Swanston Street, very swish, my daughter calls Melbourne the New York of Australia.

Melbourne is wonderful for the transport, very easy to get around on the public Transport.

There are also ambassadors who will escort you around Melbourne on a walking tour, there is no charge for this.

I am going to have to admit it, :o I was a Victorian (yes born a Mexican :rolleyes:you know south of the border and all that), although grew up outside of Australia, but came back to go to school there and I still have family down there. I get a little rusty sometimes with my memory of places and things to do.

The 6hr tickets are now daily ones. A zone 1 ticket for bus, tram, train is great value for an adult.

We are travelling over to Williamstown for lunch (maybe some city time too), and to be only costing us $13 for the day is great.

I have also found excellent public transport arrangements for Hobart and Burnie.

All day tickets in Sydney are more expensive ($16) but they do not have zones and cover a much larger area and ferries too.

Hi Glenda,

I will still hopefully be at Station Pier to meet up. Probably the best coffee shops would be in Port Melbourne just up the road.

I know that visitors can't get onto the pier at any time due to security restrictions in place. There is a ship there every day, one of the the tassy ferries.

Do they close it when the Tassie ferries are in now too?? Used to only be when the cruise ships were in that you couldn't get onto the pier.

Geoff you have to get some Melbourne city time too.

Don, I am really looking forward to seeing what Station Pier is actually like! It seems like maybe that Brissy is the only port that is visitor friendly and a social hub. Just not Cunard friendly, but when they build the new port I'm sure they will make it both Curnard and visitor firendly.

Hi Glenda,

I have visited Melbourne plenty over the years, and been to all the attractions, and lots of non-tourist stuff too. We will spend some time in the city as the 109 tram will drop us there to link with the train to Williamstown - we just don't have any preset plans for what to do, or how long to stay when we get there.
