I remember back in the early 80 s on the ship they use to have pillow fighting contest and beer drinking contest and they use to have the best legs contest.

I also remember in the dinning room the had on each table a plate of olives and pickles.

one night the waiter brought my friend a whole plate for himself because he liked them so much.

 

I remember the Skeet Shooting and also driving Golf balls off the stern. I do remember the Pillow Fighting Contest but it was like over the pool and also the Beer drinking contest, the majority of the women would win this one :D

 

We also had a Mini Midnight buffet at 1am which served up Breakfast.

Just remembered a few more:

 

There was at least one huge "toga party" during the week....and attendees showed up in the dining room wearing sheets and "crowns".....barefoot and usually snockered.

 

At some point during the cruise, a conga line would form somewhere....it went all over the ship gathering people from wherever they were.... It sometimes ended with everyone jumping into the pool.... Luckily,no one was seriously injured at any time.......:eek:

 

There was a Masquerade party during the week. Some people brought costumes - most made them from whatever they could find. Ship's crew and others helped in the hunt for things to use for costumes.....

Reading all the posts on this thread has brought back a lot of memories from my first cruise in 1988 on Carnival's Celebration.

 

We paid about $1200 each for an inside cabin, including airfare, and left out of Miami, visiting the ports of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas & St. Martin. DOD's were served in glass. We participated in mostly all of the activities on deck.........pillow fighting, frog race, hairy leg contest, etc. I'm pretty sure there was a Midnight Buffet every night? My husband enjoyed skeet shooting off the back of the ship.

 

Oh...........anyone remember when they used to throw the trash overboard at the end of the night?

My ex-Marine Corps friend won that one quite handily. Was not a quantity contest of course, but a speed-drinking contest. If they were smart they wouldn't have allowed Marines to compete. Unfair advantage. ;)

Does anyone remember at the sail-aways, the crew handed out those little rolls of colorful streamers and everyone threw them toward the dock as we left port. It may have been on another cruise line, not Carnival. In my old age some of our cruises run together. Well anyway it was fun, but I guess that was before we knew so little aout polluting the environment and the seas.

Sailed the Mardi Gras in 1976 and again in 1987...twin beds you could not move.

 

On the first cruise the seating assignments were made as you boarded. As you entered the dining room after boarding a large map of the tables was posted. Then you wrote your names at the chairs where you'd like to sit.

 

My cousin and I signed our names on a table full of females. My parents and other family filled their table so we ventured out. The first night we met the women in their 50's who were our tablemates for 7 nights :) Not that women in their 50's are a bad thing, I sleep with one now!

 

Skeet shooting on the fantale deck and golf driving from the platform with a harness around your waist to keep you from falling overboard.

 

I did not see topless bathing on any deck except the very top one, and signs were posted. Trust me, at 18 in 1976 I would have noticed :)

 

The movie theatre aboard the Mardi Gras was very nice. Spent an afternoon or two there with a lovely young girl I met aboard. Forgot the movie...

 

In Nassau the locals climbed the dock lines and dived for coins.

 

Dinner took two hours so it seemed, but the presentation was incredible.

 

Bow and stern thrusters didn't exist, so tugs were the order of the day. In fact the first Carnival cruise ever ran aground on a sandbar while leaving Miami.

The ones on Carnival was "impromptu".....usually several who had already overindulged in spirits would suggest it and others like-minded and like-wise impaired would think it a good idea... The rest, they say, is history......

Yeap and thats when the "party cruise" reputation started.

So next time you hear anyone talking about the fact that they would never go on Carnival because it's nothing but Drunks & parties....You will know these people have either not cruised on Carnival since the 80's or the person that told them about it hasn't.:cool:

 

Not true today.That kind of mindset is why the "frat house party boat" reputation does not die off.Todays Carnival has raised itself far above that.

 

I have sailed on a few party ships as of late.....2005 & 2006 come to mind.......the reputation still runs strong:D

I remember being served alcoholic drinks on my first cruise - and I was only 17!:cool:

 

I remember there was no Camp Carnival or teen club (whatever that's called), so me and my 8 year old brother had free-reign of the ship. I don't know about my brother, but I sure got into mischief!:eek:

I've done 6 CCL cruises in the past 2 years, and for all 6, the asst waiter comes around with the bread. The rolls are no longer left on the table.

Wow, times have changed. I haven't cruised for that long (didn't have some of those little perks some people have mentioned)) but i too notice some changes. For example: they no longer have the happy hours for discounted drinks during the cruise :(. They did last year on our cruises but on both cruises we've taken this year they are gone. We even tried to buy alcohol from the on board duty free shop on the last day & they said they would still hold it til "about 8:30" that night so we said forget it. It seems they'll do anything to save a dollar if there's one to be made.

That's cause the average age on those Canada/New England cruises is about 89...;)

My first cruise was a travel agent fam trip on Princess around 1984-85. One night I was out on deck looking at the stars. It was very late or should I say early. Anyway I was enjoying looking at stars wishing my DH was with me since he owns telescopes and has an astronomy degree and I looked over the side of the ship. I thought I saw sea turtles swimming by the ship. I didn't know better since I know dolphins sometimes swim by ships. I was kind of excited until I leaned over further and saw an open door and people tossing out bags of trash.

 

I said something to a crew member and they said that they dump trash only when they were far out at sea!

I cruised for the first time with my parents on the Carnivale around 1978. I was about 12 years old. There was not much children's programming, but I do remember a separate costume contest for the kids. I also remember the pillow fights on this thing like a pommel horse, as well as horse races. I believe the adults were betting on the winner for both of those contests.

 

I do remember the indoor movie theater. I believe there was also an indoor pool? If anyone can confirm this, that would be great.

 

Funniest thing was we were allowed to play slot machines in the casino! My DB picked a dime up off the floor and hit some kind of jackpot. I remember this because I was mad!

 

I remember every night was formal night too.

 

It was definitely the best family vacation we ever did, and part of the reason I'm hooked today!

I just remembered that in the late 1980's when we sailed on RCCL, at the end of the cruise we received a nice printed, glossy covered booklet with the names of all the passengers on that cruise and their home towns or cities.

And that's young compared to the avarage age of a Hawaii cruise! :eek:
