Cabin location warning posts

I'm writing this in response to some postings I saw on another thread about warnings about cabin locations. I hope you can help.

 

First some history - I fell like I know a lot about the industry becuase I have been enjoying these boards for years. However, I have never cruised before. I've been a member of cruisecritics forum for a long time but haven't posted much becuase we could just never make a decision to cruise. We have finally decided to make it happen. We are booked on the Pearl in cabin 11070 next year.

 

I have been reading horror stories about bad room locations and the importance of checking what is above and below your cabin. (Things I have never had to worry about on a land based vacation) So I'm trying to do my homework - especially since it is my first cruise.

 

For those who have cruised on the Pearl before, can you tell me what is in the space marked with the red arrow on deck 12 in the picture below? You will see my cabin marked on deck 11.

 

This is my 15th year anniversay trip and our very first cruise. We are very excited about it and I don't want it to be ruined by too much noise from above us. Thanks for all your help! :)

I'm pretty sure that's just an open area that serves as a walkway for people going from the buffet to the pool area. Lots of foot traffic there during the day, probably not a lot late night.

I agree on the walkway, and it had a couple of tables and chairs sitting there also.

Yes, that's right. I was in 11070 (on the Jewel - identical deck plan). No noise whatsoever. There are 3 tables in that area but they are almost never used. Other than that it's just a walkway leading to the pool area.

That's our preferred location on any ship we are on ... GREAT location! The only noise you *might* hear is some washing of the deck or occasional sliding of outdoor furniture ... no probs! :)

However, on your deck, you are very close to the elevator lobby, where you can expect noise from fellow passengers entering your hallway. I don't think it is a real problem, but it is something to consider.

Just to confirm what everyone else has said.. it is an area, open on two sides but with a roof above it that transitions from the buffet to the pool area.

yikes! I have been near the elevators before and didn't like it, so I made sure this time to stay away from them. But, for some reason I didn't check above our room before our last booking. So has anyone ever been below the casino? :(

How bad do you think it will be?

I have seen that area on deck 12 on Jewel class ships used for tennis table.

I would think (but don't know) that above or below the casino would be worse than near the elevators. Every cabin I've ever had on a cruise ship (Princess, Carnival, NCL) has been near the elevators -- I use a wheelchair and most of the handicap-accessible cabins are bunched near the elevators -- and I've never noticed any problems with noise of people moving in to the hallway, or hanging around the elevator, or any of that.

I think that is a perfect cabin location...middle of the ship, near the elevators, close to pool area, and under the overhang from above so the balcony is shaded and does not get too hot. Have fun!

let me say first, your location is just fine and next 99% of the cabins are in good locations. There are just a handful that cause the problems. For us, we really like being near an elevator and have never had trouble with noise, the worst, cabins on lower decks that are forward. You can hear the anchors as well as other noises. yuk!!! Remember one more thing, noise normally travels down, so if you are above something that could cause unusual noise like the casino, showroom, etc you will be ok...

Personally, I'd be cautious. I tend to prefer cabins that have nothing above or below them but other cabins. Your experience might vary. :-)

I have been in this exact cabin on the Jewel, identical deck plan to the Pearl. There is no heavy door to slam. I can't quite remember if there was no door at all or an auto-opening slider, but I'm pretty confident there is no door you have to open or could slam. The doorway would not be directly above the cabin anyway, it would be across the hallway from the cabin door below. I suppose its possible for kids to run through there, but they have to turn corners twice so I would think they'd be at least a little cautious, and again, they would be above the hallway not above the cabin. I was on a 10 day Canada/New England itinerary, so not many kids. Other cruises could have more kids.

 

To the OP - I don't think you could pick a better AF cabin if they gave you a tour of the ship and the time to inspect them all before selecting. As far as I was concerned it was perfect - midship, close to elevators but removed from the elevator lobby by at least two rooms, up one flight of stairs and a few steps to the buffet entrance or to the pool area, decent overhang above the balcony for shade and privacy, no issues at all. Don't worry about it, you did good.

These boards are so great. I am sure someone has been in my cabin for our upcoming cruise on the Jade, 11046. It seems to be right below the pool deck. Anyone been in that room? Comments?

As far as I was concerned it was perfect - midship, close to elevators but removed from the elevator lobby by at least two rooms, up one flight of stairs and a few steps to the buffet entrance or to the pool area, decent overhang above the balcony for shade and privacy, no issues at all. Don't worry about it, you did good.
