1night gem -- freestyle & short review

I felt that the one nighter is probably better for party people. For the cost we paid i thought it was a bit much, but if your a party person and take advantage of everything offered then it is worth it, were not party people so i thought for us it was expensive since we didnt do much of the activities offered.

My status as now changed to Gold on NCL you have to sign in to check yours.

Just a silly question... In the freestyles it says pool and jacuzzi are open weather permitting, I didnt realize they had a indoor pool?? Or just a joke? LOL What about the sail away BBQ? We will be on the Jan 24th one nighter and I am pretty sure the temps wont reach much above 20 or 30.

The pool and jacuzzis were up and running outside and there were some brave kids in the pool. (heated). We had a party of twleve and although we all didn't hang out together the whole time, we all had a wonderful trip. We ate lunch in the Grand Pacific and we all loved our choices. I skipped dinner at the sit down resturant (at a private party and had some finget foods so opted to eat later at the buffet) Breakfast was little chaotic at the buffet . We were able to find d seat after about 7 or 8 minites. I was in the casino for a while and was able to find machines of my liking without too much wait. The automatic Roulette wheel has a couple stations that weren't working so that was hard to get a seat at. My DH got the spa pass ($20) and used the facility for a couple hours. Parking was more than we had expected. Someone from out roll call said they were told $25 where it was $30 and the bowling doubled in price since out last cruise so that was out of the question. Our room steward was very nice as was out waitress in the Grand Pacific so I dind't mind the extra $2 a day for the Service charge but I thought the Casino hostess was a little cranky. All in all, we had a great time. More good than bad.

I just returned also. We had an excellent time. It was nice to see her again, see looked well. We did have a sewer smell in our cabin when we first arrived but was corrected with some water in the traps. I guess this is an common problem on the Gem in some cabins.

We had lunch and breakfest in the Grand Pacific, food was OK, staff was very nice but it took forever for the meals to arrive. We were in no hurry so it didn't bother us.

We had dinner in Cagney's. Excellent

We watched a nice show after dinner dropped off some funds at the casino and hung out at a few bars. It was a nice get away for the day and I look forward to going again.

We did not have a lifeboat drill. They announced the info over the PA system .

We had a nice time as well, i'm sure if I were feeling better I would stayed up most of the night but it's okay..I spent time laying in the cabin with my boyfriend being taken care of....no complains there! My mom also kept bringing me tea....I actually had soup and things to help during a sick period that I wouldn't of had at my service at home..if that makes sense.

I'm so glad there was no drill...I think I would of passed out on the floor...during lunch I was so dizzy.

Strange....we had a sewer smell as well, but I was used to it from the Sky the previous week.

I think that the problem is that people go on the one night cruises expecting a "cruise" experience. That's not what it is. It's a floating party. Most people don't even sleep from what I've been told. They're always extremely crowded and I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if prices of on board items/activities are pushed up just for that night.

You can't let a one nighter influence whether you sail a particular ship, or a particular line because it is completely different from a "real" cruise.

CG

That's why it's not worth spending too much money. It's a nice night away.

I really hope people who did the one night for the first Cruise ever don't get discouraged and try a real Cruise because like you said it's a completely different thing.

It's not my first cruise to nowhere it's my 3rd so I can compare it with something. And yes those other two were party times. The food was cold and did you have breakfast in the dining room or in the buffet, if you had it in the dining room, I couldnt even get out of the elevator because there were so many people standing there......I never saw anything like that before, and if you had the buffet........did you enjoy the cold food? I am not new to cruising (over 40) and not new to NCL this was my 5th cruise.......

They shouldnt do these cruises if they can't support the crowd.

Dorene

I was just suprised there was no Ship Crew by the elevator...people were cutting which was starting arguments. Ah well, what can ya do right?

I understand the crowds...I knew it was going to be like that...everyone wants to get as much as possible done it just one night.

This was my 14th cruise and only 2nd 1 nighter. I also thought it was way too crowded everywhere. We waited 45 minutes to get into dining room. Breakfast was crazy crowded. I was on spirit in October for 1 nighter and it was much more organized. The casino was crazy too , waited about an hour for a drink. These are great party cruises and we had a great time except for crowds. Food was ok and sevice was just ok too. I just felt that the lines all over were because of the lack of organization. I am not sure if I would do another 1 nighter with NCL might try another line next time.

I see you went on the Crown Princess....I enjoyed that ship...specially the TV outside while they served milk & cookies and popcorn...nice touch.

We also just came back from the Gem-1 nighter and LOVED IT. We have done 1 nighters before and know not to expect too much. I've sailed from NY several times and every single time there is such kind of delay boarding. I'm used to be on board around 11:30 when sailing from Florida but that never happens in NY. Any way, we arrived at the pier at 11:00 AM parked the car ($30) and went to the special check-in for Owner's Suite. We had 15000 all the way up on deck 15 and my 2 teenager daughters had a mini-suite on deck 11. For some strange reason you cannot put 4 people on that Owners Suite. We waited at the VIP room for 1 hour until a crew member brought us on board. First time ever that the concierge did not introduce himself/herself - not even over the phone. But we had a wonderful butler, Ryan, who took very good care of us and my girls. We tipped him extra because he was so nice.

The view from the cabin is absolutely gorgeous. We have stayed in the Garden Villa on the Pearl before. Of course nothing can compare to the Garden Villa, however, the view from the bed in the Owner's Suite is nicer than the Master Bedroom in the Garden Villa. The suite is really nice. Bathroom, walking closet, seating area and bar. Everything was beautifully done. Unfortunately the hot tub on the verandah wasn't working properly. By the time it was fixed it was already late at night and the water was boilling. We couldn't even put a finger in. But by then we had already gone to the Courtyard to use the little pool and the hot tub. We were the only ones there. Empty... nobody around.

After boarding we had lunch at Cagney's and then went bowling. While on the Pearl we didn't have to pay for bowling because we were on the GV. This time we had to pay $10 and I think even the GV would have to pay. We tried to walk around the ship but it was too crowded and we already knew the ship so we went back to our cabin.

We had dinner at Cagney's and went to see the show. After the show we went to the White Night party and my younger daughter (15) got wings from the crew and the 4 of us were dancing like that was no tomorrow. It was wonderful to dance with my DH and my DDs. At 11:00 PM we returned the wings and went to Second City. Have seen that show many times so the jokes are old by now but I enjoy them. Went to bed around midnight. Woke up in time to see us arriving back to NY. Had breakfast once again at Cagney's and left the ship at 9:30 AM.

We had a great time and only wished they had 1 nighters during the summer so we could use the entire ship:).

We are both in mid 30th. We have been on two cruises before – Holland America’s Noordam ( 11 nights) and Cunard’s QM2 ( 4 nights). So I was comparing everything on NCL Gem with two previous trips even thought it was only 1 nighters.

I found ship very cramped and boring. There are s no open spaces, no wide halls. And whatever space was available in mini atrium, it was taking by photographers.

We ate dinner at Magenta and breakfast in Grand Pacific Dining room. Food was nothing special at all. I checked buffet on the deck 12. Food for lunch and dinner was totally the same. And again, very boring.

Show at 9.15 was just OK. After that we went to White Party. Female entertainment staff (who was dressed in white with angel wings) hardly was engaged with the dancers. The men from entertainment group were just standing around. I also didn’t like the music so we left pretty soon. I though it will be crowded since pretty much nothing else was going on after the show, but only about 100 people showed up and half of them actually danced.

We had inside cabin which was tiny. I can’t even imagine going on 7-10 night cruise and have inside cabin especially with kids.

I booked this trip through SeaMiles travel agent by using some points. So at the end we got a good price. If we would stay one night in NY, see the show and ate few times out, we would pay three times more.

I don’t think we will be cruising with NCL any time soon.

I couldn't imagine fitting more than two people in an inside...it's small enough already.

The only inside jacuzzi I know of is the Spa...that's an extra Cost. There was a BBQ outside...and yes it was freezing outside..but I heard from my mom people were outside.

Jerzzy:

It was quite nippy last night. With wind chills it had to feel like the teens or 20s. The pools and hottubs were open and there were about 20 people that I saw using the tubs and cooling off in the pools. No way, I was cold just watching them ! The sailaway buffet was poolside along with the band. I guess it will be the same for your sailing unless it's raining or snowing.

About the other posters comments...

Yes it was crowded but I expected that when no one is outside b/c of the cold. I also agree about poor food quality. I also thought the portions were laughable. The chef salad at Blue Lagoon had to have less than 1 cup of lettuce and the ham must have been frozen or something b/c it was very wet and as white in color as the turkey. The soup had one wonton in it and the spinach and artichoke dip was inedible. One in our party said it tasted like cream of mushroom soup with spinach in it minus the salt. Someone posted the food in the buffet was a better bet for breakfast. Go figure, we ate in the diningroom. We were afraid the buffet would be a zoo. The "pancakes" consisted of TWO 3"diameter cardboard discs. Bacon was plentiful though ! Dinner at Orchid Garden was the best food we had but thought portions were a little small also.

We thought the house chardonnay was quite good and the prices on some liquor was reasonable. Johnnie Walker Blue for $16. is much less then we'd pay locally.

Our friends had an inside cabin and it was pretty dark in there. OK for one night but thats it. We had a minisuite and it was very nice. Decent storage, well thought out bathroom pretty comfortable bed and decent size balcony. Overall we thought the ship was very nice and found it to be clean. Not sure I'd do another one nighter or not just yet.

You couldn't PAY ME to use the pools...it was freezing outside..nevermind in the pool....though I remember the pools on the Gem to be heated when we took her in April to Europe..still it could be hot there and then when you get out it's FREEEEZZZINNGGG! What was with the Spinach Dip in the Blue Lagoon? It really didn't taste right.

I have a question...what is the lowest CAT. that can use the Private Courtyard area?

We were one of the ones that ate breakfast in the dining room. The line was all the way almost to the reception desk. I've never seen anything like it. It was awful. The food in the dining room was not hot either but it was definately better than going to the buffet i think.

First, considering costs for NCL cruises compared to Cunard and even HA, I don't think it's fair to compare them. 2nd, comparing two long cruises, to a 1 night is like comparing apples to oranges. They are in no way alike except that both are on a ship.

I'm not saying that you should sail NCL again, but I think that comparing your NCL 1 nighter to your other to cruises is completely unfair. You need to either go on a longer NCL cruise, or take a 1 nighter on the other lines in order to get a fair comparison.

It is not an indoor pool per se..It is a part of the Spa and it's a hydrotherapy pool. People were in the hottub on the 1/3 1 niter....they did have the sailaway BBQ...

When you book a cruise for a JANUARY saildate in the NORTHEAST - whether it is a 1 niter or a 7 or a 10 niter....you have to realize that WEATHER WILL BE A FACTOR in connection with OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES....The cruise line no matter which one has no control over the weather especially when the odds are against you (Winter/northeast)

If you want better odds..leave from a Caribbean, southeastern/western port (San Juan/San Diego/Los Angeles- and even then the weather is what it is and whatever will be will be...(rain/overcast, etc)

I did the 7 nite NYE cruise on the Gem and stayed for the 1 niter...totally different crowd....someone mentioned earlier and I agree that you cannot look at a 1 niter as a "cruise experience"...it is basically a night out on the town (albiet a floating town)....it becomes what you make of it....My group had a good time on the 1 niter (people watching) and a great time the week before..

FYI...from an extremely reliable (but confidential) source...the casino earned MORE revenue on the 1 niter than it did over the WHOLE 7 nite crusie the week before.....hmmm...

I'll be on again on the 24th.....love it....will see crew and staff friends again and just plan to make it a great Sat/Sun no matter what...I booked early, inexpensive for an inside...prices went up and rather than an OBC since it was paid in full - got upgraded to a balcony, and will just enjoy it...sometimes we get warm sunny afternoons...and if nothing else I will use the balcony to view the sailaway once more....

Have a marvelous Monday everyone.....GO NAVY!!! later all...Marla

Wow, after reading this I'm glad we went to the buffet for breakfast! Yes, it was a zoo, but the freshly-made omelette was good. They tried to keep the lines moving but people seemed afraid to lose their spot. Several stations were making omelettes.

This was my first Norwegian cruise and I liked it. Also my first COLD weather cruise! I loved Spinnaker lounge. and thought lunch in the dining room was very good. Very attentive waiters. I liked the disembark at your leisure policy. Best bathrooms on a cruise ship yet.

I enjoyed the Colorz show and the Second City comedy act.

They didn't start to board till quite late I thought so I was glad we didn't arrive till 12:15. Onboard at 1.

I had a lot of fun and would do another one-nighter on Gem.

I'm sure that the casion and the shops and restaurants made a killing. Everything was jamb packed with hardly anywhere to walk. The specialty restaurants were in full swing and people were actually eating in them. That could be the reason why the main restaurants food is not all that. They want you to spend extra to eat better food at a price.

We are still looking into going on the 1/24 one nighter but the prices are so high, not worth it for a one night in my honest opinion. We may as well do a 7 nighter for the price total they want for the one night. Comes out to almost 800 for a cabin for a one night. Thats nuts. We will hold off and see if our luck changes and the prices go down or someone cancells.

Enjoy your cruise!

It was already dropping tempatures here in Jersey by October...January for us is just the start of the cold Winter Season....we get long & cold winter seasons...so you're right nobody should expect warm weather leaving from here in January.

Tell me about those prices! It's amazing to me that people will pay that much for a 1 or 2 night cruise. I realize that a night in NY will cost a lot so I guess that is the basis, but wow, it's so expensive.

Back in November, we decided to give my MIL a short cruise as a Christmas present to see if she would like cruising. I was going to book either a 1 or 2 night out of NY as we are in Maryland. People advised me not to book one of those if I wanted MIL to have a true cruise experience but being located where we are, I didn't think I had any more options. Someone suggested I check out the 3 day sailings out of Miami for the Sky. I did so expecting for it to be way out of our price range. Imagine my surprise when I found I could fly to FL from Maryland, and go on a 3 day Sky cruise for LESS then a 1 or 2 night out of NY. Of course that's what we booked, but I'm still stunned.

We went on the Sky in Dec and we paid 99 dollars for 3 days, vs 99 dollars for the one day out of ny. The sky was an older ship but we still found it nice, and the Cruise consultant Rusty was wonderful. I would definately sail on the sky again. Small and easy to walk around etc. The only real problem we had was the sewar smell in the back of the ship and in the elevators. Once the three day was over and we got back on for the 4nighter we were use to the smell so it didnt bother us as much. The food was good even though we ate pasta and pizza every day for lunch :) can you tell we are picky eaters? lol
