A newbie on the Carnival Glory 05/09/09

Recommended Posts

Hey there. Just signed on to the cruise blog. My wife and I are taking our first cruise ever this year. We're sailing on 5/9/09 from Port Canaveral on the Carnival Glory. Been going through the information and FAQ's on the Carnival web site which really helps, but still have a few questions. Any one else out there cruising this one? We'll be staying in Cocoa Beach for four days before the trip. We're from Illinois,( I'm sure you've heard about Illinois on the news lately), you know, the Govenor. Right now, we're in a deep freeze around here. Suppose to drop down to 0 degrees with a wind chill of -15. Can't wait til May 9! ;)

Welcome to Cruise Critic!! 04.gif

Thank you for your first post! However, you have posted on the Cruise Blogs & Websites Forum where members share the sites for their personal cruise-related travelogue blogs or websites. This is not the correct forum for your post since it is off-topic here. 05.gif

Read the Sticky thread titled What is a ROLL CALL and how do I find mine? at http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=44773. The thread will tell you about the Cruise Critic Roll Call Forums. They are the place for you to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you before the cruise. To help you find your Roll Call thread quicker, click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=801472 for your Roll Call titled Glory-Eastern *~*5/9/09*~*

For information about your ports of call click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=5 for our list of the Ports of Call Forums. That's where you can research for tours, excursions, transportation etc. Your fellow Cruise Critic members post their reviews/recommendations there. Also, your fellow Roll Call members may have information posted in your Roll Call thread. In fact, your Roll Call thread is the only place on Cruise Critic where members can post about sharing tours, excursions, transportation etc.

Since you are new to cruising, click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=97 to research our First Time Cruisers Forum. Click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=114 to research our Ask a Cruise Question Forum. To research for information about Cocoa Beach, click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=495 for our Florida Departures Forum. To research for information from your fellow Cruise Critic members that have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before, click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=215 for our Carnival Cruise Lines Forum.

Please feel free to use the Search this Forum feature on all Cruise Critic message board forums with your key word or words. It will help narrow down the threads you will want to read during your research. Also, you can see if your inquiry has been asked and answered before. And it probably has... many, many times! 05.gif Click the feature to open the drop down. Type in your key word or words then click the little Go button. I suggest you do not try a search with too many or too common of key words at one time. This will sometimes overwhelm the search feature with too many threads to scan and it will time out. From time to time, you may receive an error message that says "Search function is down". PLEASE TRY AGAIN in a few moments. This message will often pop up during the busiest times of the day.

The following information may be helpful too:

Be sure to read our FAQ, especially the Getting Started section. You will see how a new topic should be consistent with the specific forum you choose. It also gives a brief summary of the topics covered in some of the forum sections. Other important FAQ sections are Subscriptions (Receiving e-mail notification of replies to posts and threads you specify) and User Maintenance.

Click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/index.php for the list of all Cruise Critic message board forums and be sure to read all Announcement and Sticky threads at the top of the various forums for very important information or instructions.

In our Guidelines, please note the Please Browse BEFORE You Post section since many of your questions may have been asked and answered before as mentioned above.

Be sure you are on the correct forum. After you have browsed/researched for your topic and possibly not found an answer, word your new inquiry title so the other members scrolling through the thread titles will know exactly the information you seek. This will help the members as they scroll through the thread titles so they can reply to you. It is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic or concerning one cruise line, port of call, etc. You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship & sail date in your inquiry if it will help the members with their answers to you.

If you wonder what some of the icons/symbols/arrows on Cruise Critic mean, just use your mouse to slowly hover your cursor over the item and most often a tool-tip will appear with the name or action.

I sincerely hope this information will be helpful and glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic!

Hey Double X, Figuring out WHERE to post what and then finding it again can be confusing at first. Don't sweat it.

My wife and I are going on the GLORY 05/09/2009 sailing also. We live in Florida but lived in Champaign, IL for, as I call it, "seven damned winters". We've been on LOTS of cruises, so if you want to ask questions, email us at rcox32@nospamcox.net (remove the 'nospam').

Happy to help,

Bob

... and then finding it again can be confusing at first...

One way to find your previous posts is to click on your user name above the words Cool Cruiser on one of your posts. A menu will appear and you click Find all posts by ... A list of up to the last 250 of your posts will appear showing the names of all the forums where your posts are located. Just click the first part of your post next to the piece of paper icon. It is underlined since it is a link and you will automatically go back to your post in the thread. The list will also show the Replies and Views counts for the thread too.

However, if you do not have one of your own posts handy to click your user name, click Members List. It is in the same bar as User CP, FAQ, Guidelines, etc. but further over toward the right.

When the screen opens, click Search Members and a drop-down menu will appear. Type in your user name and click the Go button. Do not click Advanced Search. When typing your or any other member user name, be sure to type exactly as you see it on the boards. The search is case/space/symbol sensitive.

The next screen should have the following headings: User Name, Find Posts, Join Date, Posts and Avatar. If you click your user name, your profile will appear. If you click the Find button, the same list of up to the last 250 of your posts will appear and you do the same as mentioned above.

And yes, these same procedures work when you want to read another member's profile or find their previous posts.

However, the best way to stay informed on your posts is to make sure you have subscribed to every thread where you post. I see by one of the Mod screens you both have your Automatic Thread Subscription Mode set as Do not subscribe but it can be changed if you like.

It is easy to do and here are the steps:

Click User CP

Click Edit Options

Scroll down to the Messaging & Notification section

Look at the Default Thread Subscription Mode box

Your choices in the drop down menu are as follows:

  1. Do not subscribe
  2. No email notification
  3. Instant email notification
  4. Daily email notification
  5. Weekly email notification

Highlight (click) your new choice

Scroll to the bottom of the page & click the Save Changes button

I find the instant e-mail notification works best for me, and may for you too. That way I do not have to go looking for any replies since they come looking for me!

Now if you want to subscribe to a particular forum using Forum Tools, there is no instant e-mail. The only subscription choices for a forum are as follows:

  1. No email notification
  2. Daily updates by email
  3. Weekly updates by email

Click here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showp...4&postcount=15 for a very important previous post by member Globaliser for even more information about subscriptions. Especially the part about the first User CP page where you will see the list of your subscribed threads.

If there is a thread you are interested in the replies but do not necessarily want to post to the thread, you can click Thread Tools and then Subscribe to this Thread. A screen will appear where you can indicate how you want to be notified about any additional replies on that particular thread. This is also what you will need to do to threads where your posts were made prior to your Automatic Thread Subscription Mode setting change if you want to be aware of future replies on your previous posts there.

I sincerely hope this additional information will be helpful!
