Best eats in NOLA?

Did a quick check and couldn't find a reference to these restaurants yet........

Did some research and a lot of people are suggesting Mothers as a place to go for Po-boys, but I also found "Johnny's Po-boys" and it also got some excellent reviews....just looking for some input.

Mother's is definitely over-rated. Find another place that serves Po-boys....I wasn't impressed with Mothers at all.

Ok local New Orleans folks! These are some of the places that we would like to eat at while in New Orleans. I have a question on one of the places.

Would like to have breakfast at Cafe du Monde

For dinner Deanie's Seafood (downtown location since we are staying downtown and forgo our car rental)

We both want some really good po boys. Someone at work suggested Domilise. Now how close are they from downtown New Orleans? Can we take the cable car? Will will take a taxi if the cost is not outrageous.

Can anyone suggest any other spot downtown for po boys? We also talked to people with mixed comments about Mother's.

I checked out JD's website. It could have been the one.

 

The menu's different but that was 30 years ago. Where we were had a shrimp basket (or boat) that was a carved out loaf of bread, buttered and toasted, filled with tempura style battered shrimp. I only remember one set of steps going up to the building. All of the tables and chairs were like unmatched 1950's kitchen table sets.

 

 

There are still a number of neighborhood restaurants in and around New Orleans, but if you had a seafood boat it would have been from Lakeview Seafood on Hayne Blvd. Don't think it's dere no more.

There are no cable cars in New Orleans! That is San Francisco. In New Orleans they are street cars or trolleys. Not sure they will get you close to either.

I'm going to list out different styles and prices ranges:

 

Iris-- (absolutely terrific, but for the experienced gastronomist IMO)-- great location across from Jax Brewery. I've been probably 5 times.

 

Luke-- have to give another shout out... went last weekend, one of my top restaurants in Nola!

 

Stella-- pricey (we did the tasting menu for 2 and it was 500.00 before tip), but my absolutely top favorite restaurant right now in Nola.

 

Central Grocery-- for the best muffelatta

 

Deanie's -- in the suburb of Metairie, but it's a can't beat for the seafood

Wow, I'm surprised to hear someone say that. I was very impressed with Mother's for both lunch and breakfast. For lunch it was super crowded and they could have done better managing the line, but the food was great!

 

I first learned about Mother's on Man vs. Food, and when I visited there I wasn't let down.

i'm a local and can absolutely recommend Mr B's Bistro. however Bayona, which i have not seen mentioned here, is the best restaurant in the city, IMO. they offer a great tapas lunch on saturday only, 3 for $25, which is a great deal for the caliber of food they offer.

I would like to recommend Cafe Adelaide - it is a sister restaurant to Commander's Palace. It is located in the Loews Hotel across the street from the Harrah's Casino. It has a nice lounge, too, and the hotel offers free validated parking. We have been there several times (both the restaurant and separately to the lounge) and it has always been very good. It is a little more casual than Commander's Palace - you do not need a coat & tie, but I would not go in shorts. I find Commander's overrated. I was just there in 2009 & I thought it was just OK.

I've read mixed reviews about Mothers on this page. We were at first going to Amce,but the line was really long. The line for Mother's was shorter and closer parking.

Every employee that we came in contact with was very friendly. I order the debri po boy and a cup of red beans and rice. My friend ordered the red beans and rice,smoke sausage and cabbage plate.

The food was really good and filling! I had to force myself to complete the po boy :D and my friend had to take half of her food back to the hotel.

It was crowded,but it was in spurts. I really enjoyed myself and would go back again!!

We were headed somewhere else for lunch when the skies opened up and we ducked into the restaurant at House Of Blues (225 Decatur Street).

 

They have a lunch special from opening until 3:30. Half a poorboy, a cup of soup and a salad for $9.95. Everything was first-rate.

I am not a seafood eater... so here's my non-seafood eatin' loves.

 

Port of Call. Best cheeseburger I've ever had. DELICIOUS! Also prefer their hurricanes to Pat O's.

 

El Gato Negro. Great filet tacos. Mexican Coke (I loove Mexican Coke). Pineapple Cilantro Lime Margarita is something I literally dream about.

 

Juan's Flying Burrito. YUM. Not sure if there's one on the quarter though?

 

Croissant D'Or. DELICIOUS patries and baked goods. While I love Cafe Du Monde, this is much better and less wait.

They are good, but I prefer the original from Drago's. There is a Drago's location in the Hilton Riverside.

We went there for lunch and it was superb. FYI: No shorts allowed so be sure everyone in your party has long pants or a dress/skirt.

Commander's is a world class restaurant and in the top two or three in New Orleans. Just like many locals whenever we have a special occasion to celebrate (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) we go there. Sometimes when we have visitors we go there during the week for lunch as well (25 cent martinis :D). All in all, the food is exquisite and the service is impeccable and although the ambiance tends to be a bit more formal (no shorts) it is in no way stuffy.

 

I see no reason why your 4 year old wouldn't enjoy CP. If you decide to go, make reservations ahead of time and ask them to seat you in the Garden Room upstairs. :) Here's their website so that you can get a feel.

Someone mentioned Deanie's, and that would be a good choice. The fried seafood is excellent, and the portions are huge. Very casual. I don't think they take reservations, but it is a big place and they move the tables quickly.

 

Most restaurants in the French Quarter are fairly small, and might find it hard to deal with a party of 14 except on very slow nights.

Between the neighborhood (way down in the Quarter just before the neighborhood starts to get a little sketchy), and the clientele (nothing middle class about the folks who hang at the bar part), Coop's isn't for everybody, but I loved the atmosphere and the food.
