AmoMondo, as you know, I can't really help with this, but as you've yet to get a response I'll add a few links I have collected so far in case you haven't seen them. :)

I would love to hear how you get on, particularly here, Tunis & Palma. :)

(Edit: PS. Did you see that thread about the little yellow go cars in Barcelona? Sounds interesting.)

can anyone who has been to Palermo tell me if the main town is walking distance from where the ships dock? Also what are the best things to do/see in palermo? Any advice gratefully received. thanks

AmoMondo: yes it's within walking distance from where the ship docks. Theres a popular beach in the area. I think it's called Mondalo or something like that. I would check out the See Palermo website & also the ships tours - that will give you an idea of popluar sites. We did the hop on hop off bus tour here as we were exhausted. (It was our last port). Hope this helps.

Okay, this is just my opinion....

We were going to book a private tour guide here as we did in Nice and Naples, but then we decided to just stay in the town and explore it ourselves. I was very disappointed.

We did walk into town and I remember it was a do-able distance. There was some nice architecture to be seen, etc., but.... I don't know.... we just didn't like the feel of the city. For one, the shopping wasn't good, I thought. The people weren't overly friendly or helpful. I wound up wishing we had hired someone to take us to one of the other towns on the opposite side of the island. I don't exactly remember now but.... a fishing village I think it was.

If I were to do it again and I had to stay in Palermo, I would book something ahead of time I think.

.

Now that I would love but as my cousin who is travelling with me (her first cruise) can bearly open a tin, I think I've not got much chance of persuading her.

Of course I'll let you know how we go, since you are doing the same cruise later in the year

Palermo is an interesting city with buildings not repaired that were bombed during WWII. I found the city to be very dirty and had a feeling of being unsafe, although I didn't have any trouble at all. It's just the feeling. Remember that it is the headquarter for the cosa nostra. I would certainly take a tour so that you can learn about the site. The Sicilian's in Palermo don't speak much english. On the positive side, I had the BEST meal every in Palermo. It was "home cooked" there was no menus you were just brought the meal of the day. The service was outstanding.
