Carnival sushi?

If we've never had sushi but are willing to try, would the cruise be a good choice for our first time trying sushi? Any recommendations for what to try? We have no idea!
I'm not sure that a cruise ship is the best place to try it. It really depends. When I've had Carnival sushi (~10 years ago on Paradise and a year ago on Fascination), it was about supermarket quality at best. It's kind of for you to decide, but think about some dish you really like, and whether you'd stick with it if you had tried it for the first time at Denny's :)

A few years ago we had sushi a few nights on the Inspiration and it was really good. I can't remember exactly what was offered but there was about 5 choices. The sushi bar was located on the Promenade deck by the Violins Bar.

And this past December we tried the sushi on the Miracle a few times at the sushi bar and at my cousins onboard wedding. The sushi bar was located by the Fountainhead Cafe and had about 4 choices, I think there were two rolls and two types of nigiri. I am not a sushi expert, I prefer the rolls here at a local place called Tsunami, but the ones they were serving on the Miracle were not too good. BUT the sushi we had at the wedding was awesome, so I'm not too sure why there was such a difference in quality?! The pictures below are sushi from the wedding (on the Miracle)...

I think a cruise is the perfect place to try anything new! I had never eaten sushie before our Destiny cruise last February. I got hooked. Every night before dinner our group would go up to the casino bar, have a cocktail with our sushie. If you don't like it, what has it cost you? I'm very adventurous on cruises in the food area. If you don't like your choice, get something else. Try it, you'll like it!

The sushi they had on the Pride was pretty awful. Just rolls that were not good. Couldn't even tell if there was fish in there.

Celebrity had an actual sushi station with real sushi rolls and fish on rice like tuna, octopus, yellowtail, etc. Much better.

Thanks for the info.

The sushi on the Elation and Paradise are OK. Not great as our local sushi bar, but like the type I can get at my local Vons. A limited selection of four types, seems to change at times. Usually a cut roll of some sort and some nigiri. Last time they had marinated carrots that were really good. These were in the condiments section. No line for those things. But would that be cutting into a buffet line? :rolleyes:A question for another thread......

The sushi bar on these two ships is across from the casino bar towards midships, directly behind the main (permanent) photo kiosk. It is kindof hidden. Definitly way too small to showcase a whole octopus.

docboy- exactly the same area on both ships.

They also served california roll at lunch one day in the DR.

Thanks! From looking at the Paradise deck plan, the sushi bar like you said is located beside the photo gallery on the Promenade level.

They also have one night in the DR where you can order a sushi plate for a starter..

Personally, I enjoy the sushi bars on the ship. I like to go about 5:30 for a light snack, follow with a cocktail, and then have dinner around 8:00 :D

The ceviche in the fish and chips area is pretty good too, but they need to up the serving so I don't have to get in line three times for it :o

No, the key to a quality sushi is the freshness of the product. Cruiselines do not provide fresh, most if not all seafood is frozen.

Of course there is a difference, the wedding sushi was paid for, the other sushi is FREE!:D I think you should try the sushi, and just keep in mind that if you like something....you can get much better quality at a nice sushi bar on land. I can't complain about the sushi, ITS FREE!:p

I've been on NCL my last three cruises, and I'm really looking forward to my Carnival cruise coming up on April 12th (Triumph). I'm getting excited about the fact that there seems little I will have to pay extra for. I think we are done with NCL for awhile, they charge you for just about EVERYTHING!!!! They nickel and dime you to death! So free sushi, whether its great or not, sounds really good to me!!!!

LOL, you're right! Never thought of it that way!

But I agree, the sushi is free (well, it's included in the price;)) so why not give it a try? I tried the caviar sushi that was served at the wedding, I probably would have never tried it at home, so I'm glad I did (even though I didnt like it).

  • 2 weeks later...
We were just on the Fantasy at the beginning of February. We enjoyed the sushi every night! Some was better than others...the tuna was really good!:)

The sushi on the Paradise this past weekend looked similar to this. It was so-so...but I spend 3 weeks in Japan a year so I get the freshest, best sushi ever then! Not "free" but pretty darn close to it. Cheap cheap cheap in Japan. :D

I was on the Miracle a couple of weeks ago and my opinion on the sushi is that it is forgettable.

I love sushi and eat it several times a week so I was excited about the sushi bar and I was sorely disappointed.

If you are more of a sushi purist then you will be turned off. The eel had a BBQ sauce instead of a terriyaki, the rolls were filled with the tiniest piece of fish and then a lot of filler.

On my next cruise I will skip it all together.
