Dry Dock Schedule

Is there a site that gives the information on which ships are in dry dock and when and for what?
On HAL's site if you go to Find a Cruise and click the Destination Calendar you will see a Sailing Schedule that marks the scheduled dry docks for each ship in light blue. That doesn't tell you what will be done, but it's a start on your question. That "schedule" is updated periodically ... and sometimes it's wrong because it needs to be updated again. :)

When you see that a ship will be in dry-dock for a month (e.g., upcoming Veendam and Oosterdam ones) you can figure that it will be undergoing some pretty extensive changes. Both of those two ships will be getting extensions of the upper decks at the stern, and the Veendam will be getting some significant changes on the Lower Promenade. When the dry-dock is just 2 weeks, the work will generally be more of a "sprucing up" nature, and/or minor repairs.

 

I just learned today that in addition to those two ships, the Amsterdam and Noordam will be getting Canaletto restaurants added during their dry-docks this Spring. I don't what additional things will be done during Amsterdam's extra 2 weeks.

Aha! I hope that means we'll be able to try the Canaletto (sp?) on the Noordam in April?
Yes, it should!
Now if they'd just add a Tamarind!
Amen! I think we will see those added to the Vistas in the next couple of years, but they may not be as large or nice as on the Signature ships.

JTL, I hope you're right. I'd like to try the Eurodam in the Caribbean, but they only seem to offer ONE non-holiday itinerary, and it's less than inspiring. (Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Thomas, Half Moon Cay.)??:confused:

Major

The Piano Bar and the Casino Bar will be gutted and transformed into a new concept called "Mix" which will have three bars serving Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales

 

42 cabins on Lower Promenade Deck will be reclassified as "Lanai Cabins" with direct exterior access via sliding door to that same deck.

 

The main show lounge will be redecorated into more of a night club feel called "Showroom at Sea".

 

A high-end jewelry boutique called "Marbella" will be added forward of the Explorers Lounge.

 

Existing cabins will receive upgrades include new decor, carpeting and soft goods.

 

Routine dry-dock maintenance to the ship's interior and exterior will be performed (paint, carpeting, repairing, replacing, etc.)

 

Ryndam will NOT lose her current Seaview/aft pool in favor of the "Retreat" wading pool moved one deck up, nor will she receive the new staterooms where the current pool is now and the accompanying ugly-a$$ rear end (like the Veendam got)

 

Ryndam will NOT receive her forward "spa staterooms" with enhanced spa amenities and accompanying extended Bridge wings which will prevent her weight & ballance to go completely out of whack (like the Veendam got)

I'm curious, wasn't it in the initial plans to make the same changes to the Ryndam as the Veendam? Did they bag the idea after seeing how ugly the stern turned out on the Veendam?

It's not yet bagged ... just postponed to a Phase 2. We can still hope it will get bagged! :D

 

Completion in Two Phases on Five Ships

Except for Veendam, completed at the end of April 2009, and Rotterdam, to be completed in December 2009, stateroom enhancements will be completed in two phases. First, in a series of drydocks in 2010 and 2011, Maasdam, Statendam and Ryndam will receive stateroom upgrades. The second series of drydocks in 2012 and 2013 will add lanai staterooms and new accommodations on the aft portion of the ships, as well as forward verandah and spa staterooms.

Any scoop on improvements to the Zaandam during its upcoming January dry dock?
I can't find the specific posts that have talked about this, but it appears that there will be nothing major IIRC. Just routine fix-up/spruce-up. It might get a Canaletto, although it's not one of the 3 ships that have been announced to be getting them in the next 8 months. :)

Unless I missed something, the posts generally said the same thing . . . no one quite knows what will be done on the Zaandam. Spruce-up, however, will be better than nothing - just in time for our February trip. Thanks.

I think that HAL has come to realize that the Retreat Wading Pool was a BIG mistake. Now they say they are putting the conversion off until the 2nd dry dock. I'll bet that its a concept that they bag. Now they have to realize that they have two ships that are sporting this disaster ( Veendam and the Rotterdam ) The retro fit back to a Sea View Pool will be expensive and time consuming. The corporate mind will never say "we made a big mistake". They will dance around the subject instead.

Previous posters have indicated that they are having trouble keeping the water in those Retreat Wading Pools. Even the slightest turn sends it sloshing! Hopefully, this "slip and fall" liability issue will prevent further destruction of the HAL fleet?

Maybe if those of us on the last cruise pack ourselves very tightly in the aft pool? And refuse to move? Then they can't take it out?

Unfortunetly the contracts were probably signed months and months ago and any changes would be expensive, but if the concept is a disaster from the start they would do well to alter the drydock plan now and avoid an expensive retrofit at a future date. In other words bit the bullet now.

Ship yards plan for dry docking far in advance and have to buy and fabricate steel for the proposed changes. Add to this the engineering required and it becomes difficult to change at the last minute. The Retreat Wading pool should have been evident in the spring that this was not a good idea. Possibly they have seen the problem and the Rotterdam will be saved from the humiliating revision.

If they have to keep the retreat pool dry on two ships for several years the economic reprecussions will be felt. Right now warm water tests of the concept have not been done. If the wading pool does overflow at the slightest tiping of the ship then they have a very real problem that should be addressed now rather than later.

It seems to me that all it would take to keep a decent aft pool would be to eliminate the installation of 5 inside cabins on deck 7.

Does this mean no piano bar on the Rotterdam after drydock? On a cruise that's my favorite place in the evening provided the pianist knows his/her stuff. I will be very disappointed.
