I was in Edinburgh this year and have to say that it is a pretty easy do it yourself place. There are convenient shuttles roundtrip from the port for 10 pounds roundtrip per person. It is about a 15 minute ride into town. From there you could easily spend 4-5 hours walking up to the Castle and exploring the town. We just made it back to the ship in time.

Last summer we used Doddlebus for all 3 of our stops in Scotland. We had a great time and was very fun.
