Ride into the city from Newark

I am now looking at booking a hotel at the Newark airport for my Oct. cruise because of the price. How hard is it to find a ride into New York City and find a ride back and how much, anyone know.

$45-$60 each way by car. By using NJ Transit it is $14 each way on the Air Train and a little less from NJ Penn Station.

It isn't cheap and it is a PIA.

You could easily add that amount to your hotel and stay in Manhattan. Staying in Newark is depressing.

1st..i wouldn't call staing in the EWR area depressing...dull, yes, depressing?? depends on the individual i guess.

you could also cab it over to Newark Penn station and hop the PATH train

www.panynj.com is the link to the Port AUthority that operates the PATH train .....it's less than 2 bucks IIRC.

www.njtransit.com

train fare from the Airport station is higher as there is a fee to access the airport (in a nutshell it's basically a 'tax"...

the fare is considerably less from Newark penn station (like 5 bucks as opposed to 15 bucks-but you will need a cab to Penn station newark)

What hotel are you looking at in Newark?

Train to NY is $4 each way and leaves you at Penn Station. Path trains cost $1.75 each way and will take you to either Herald Square (34th & 6th) with options to get off in Greenwich Village or to downtown NY (World Trade Center). The train trip is faster, but they don't run nearly as often as Path. Path is faster to downtown Manhattan.

Of course everyone would love to stay in a hotel right in the heart of midtown Manhattan, but..... that's not always in the budget. Thousands and thousands of people use the train and Path to go to NY everyday.

Check out the web sites Meg recommended for the maps and schedules to come up with a plan for your time in NY.

Figure the cost would be a good $70 (incl. tip) for car service to the pier (public transporation with luggage is really a nightmare. You can get coupons for car service on various websites.

Even if you stay at a hotel in Manhattan, it would still cost you to get to the pier. Depending on where you stay, figure another $20 to the pier.

If you are looking to stay in Newark, but travel to Manhattan just for sightseeing and you don't have luggage, then public transportation is the way to go. You have to remember that Newark is not THAT close to Manhattan so travel time needs to be considered.

One important note - public transportation to and from and within Manhattan is very safe and quite easy.
