New to RCI, loads of questions

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are due to sail Independence in August, and I have lots of questions. I know I could scross through looking for the answers, but there are so many people willing to give quick and experienced answers, here goes.

1. We have a balcony for the first time. How do we get the best use out of it?

2. What's breakfast like when you order it in the room?

3. Is there a midnight feast?

4. Is the last formal night a party night? On Princess, we had a NYE party almost.

5. We are on 2nd sitting. How do we fit that in with the shows?

6. Is there a daily itinerary?

7. Is there wireless internet, and is it expensive?

8. What are the kids clubs like? Mine will be 15 and 12.

9. Will be get caught smuggling a box or two of wine on board, and has anyone ever experienced the wrath of RCI over this?

10. Presumably we can get drinks passes for the kids. What do you reckon my drinks budget would be for a beer and a wine pre dinner, a bottle with dinner and maybe a drink after?

11. I love formal, love tux. But will I get away with smart jeans and a shirt on other nights? Just a question, opinions not really sought but I'm thick skinned.

12. Is there a trick to getting bookings for the kids for the likes of the wave rider and ice skating?

13. What are the shows like, and how often?

14. Will there be a separate show lounge for comedians etc.?

15. If I wanted to have the odd shirt laundered, is it expensive?

16. What do you bring that's not obvious, but really handy? We brought walkies talkies on our previous cruise, but I will be hiding from the kids this time.

17. Can the kids get icecreams etc. in the day free?

18. We cant afford excursions, will the ship be dead on shore days? We plan to walk and be back on foir lunch normally.

Anyway, that's enough for now.

Thank you!

Wow, that is a lot of questions!

I have never ordered breakfast to the room. They stopped the midnight buffet, but usually have a pool party one night. No extra party after formal night, but the Captains welcome aboard party is usually the first formal night. The shows usually play once for 2nd seating, and replay again for 1st seating. You will get the itinerary in your room the night before. Yes there is internet, it is really slow (sattelite) and not cheap. Some people use internet cafes in port instead. Structured programming for the 12 year old, less so for the 15 year old, more of a room they hang out in and a dance club for teens. My kids enjoy it, and my 14 yr old hangs out with kids his age around the ship. They will confiscate your alcohol, and put your luggage in the "naughty room" for you to have to go pick up. Jeans are frowned upon except on the cruises leaving out of Texas, but dockers are fine. Kids just show up at scheduled times for ice skating, but parents need to sign a release. Don't remember exactly, but it is about $5-6 to get a shirt done. Usually soft-serve available in the windjammer buffet (but I haven't been on Independence yet (2 weeks to go!). Itinerary and time of year tends to dictate how busy the ship will be on port days. Pool area tends to be busy most days.

Whew!

I'm going to do my best, but as you say there are loads of experienced cruisers here to help.

1. Wake up early and watch sunrises, take the time to watch sunsets too. 2. I enjoyed the breakfasts in the room. Had some eggs, breads, danishes, fruit. But if you desire a "real" breakfast. Hit up the Windjammer or the Main Dining Room. Get yourself some waffles, pancakes, etc.

3. Not a midnight buffet as most traditional cruisers know it. You will be able to find food anywhere though, so you can make your own feast.

4. There are more "party" nights than just the last one. Check out the parades on the Royal Promenade and such. There should be something most every night.

5. Shows fit around you. We did the 2nd seating and caught everything we wanted to see.

6. Sure is. Called the Cruise Compass. Google it and you'll find the gracious souls who have uploaded theirs.

7. There is WiFi, and yes it's expensive (if you ask me) There are packages available, but it's still costly. If you know your way around an Internet Cafe, hit them up while in port for your internet fix.

8. From the little I know, teens love these boats. I don't know the specifics, but there are teen clubs, activities, shows, etc.

9. This is a hot button topic for some. From what I've seen, you will get a slap on the wrist and the items taken away if you are caught. No walking the plank.

10. Drink passes for the kids will run you about $60 for the two of them. Unlimited. For a drink for you and the significant other, phew, I'd suggest a good $500-$600 if you enjoy your wine (for a 7 day). They have wine and dine packages that should help.

11. You will be able to get away with jeans, but I prefer khaki's anyway. They move easier and you can dress them up a little smarter.

12. Keep an eye on the Compass and they will have the hours of when those are open. They should also have a phone number that you can call to help with if you need reservations. I don't believe you do.

13. There are always shows going on. Music somewhere, movies there, etc. This is a gold star for RCI. Every evening will have 4-5 different major pieces of entertainment for you.

14. Sure will. Check the Cruise Compass and it gives you an idea of where they "play"

15. To a girl like me, yes. I think it was $4-$5 a shirt. I'd save it only if you are klutzy like myself and spill something. Otherwise, just plan your wardrobe accordingly.

16. Hats. I didn't realize how windy a cruise can be, and my snug fitting hat saved me from crying every time I had to brush my hair. If a hat isn't necessary, I'd try and remember different colored highlighters so that everyone can mark what they plan on doing on the Compass every day. Then you know where everyone is without having to really check in.

17. Up on the pool deck there is an ice cream station. Always free.

18. The ship is a wonderful place to be on shore days. It's not crowded, but there will be things to do. The only thing not open are the shops and the Casino for duty / legal reasons. We spent half the day in Jamaica and half on the ship and had a darn good time! It's a GREAT day to take advantage of the pool and sports decks. Much less crowded.

Overall, you will not be lacking for entertainment or quiet lounging if you need.

On a side note, my favorite time of day was the late night when my husband and I would unwind on our balcony and just look at the moon / stars / occasional passing ship. An absolute WONDERFUL way to unwind from the day. It was fun the night of sailaway too because we saw the lights of the Florida Keys and the occasional lighthouse.

Ah....now I want to go again. :)

Okay some of these I can answer.. I haven't traveled on IOS but heres what I know from other ships.

1. The balcony is definatly like an oasis! It's great ordering room service in the morning and eating out there as the ship is pulling into port. Also, at night when the ship is leaving is the best place to just sit back and drink a glass of wine.

2. I would definatly choose the main dining room for breakfast personally, because it's not as chaotic as the buffet, and the food is a bit better. (Don't know the menu on IOS)

3. There is usually a midnight buffet atleasttt one night on the ship.

5. There are specific shows for your dinner seating. If your eating 8:30, then you will go to the late showing around 10:30ish.

6. There is a daily itinerary called the "cruise compass"- it has everything that's going on around the ship and the times.

7. There is wireless internet and is 55 cents a minute, but you can get packages. (like $28 for 60 min).

8. I know RCL has a great kids/teen club. I would check at royalcaribbean.com to see all of the stuff they can do.

10. There is a wine and dine package available for dinner and you get one bottle per night. Prices vary though ship to ship.

11. On other RCI ships I have been on, dress code definatly varies. The tux is usually a rare-see on formal night and on other nights, jeans and a nice shirt are quite common. But it's whatever you feel comfortable in.

13. There usually is a big show once a night. That includes ice skating, comedians, singers/dancers. Then of course, the love and marriage show, and the Quest.

14. The shows are usually in the theatre. Except, the ice skating!

15. The prices are on the RCL website for laundry services. It comes down to being about 3.50/shirt.

17. Usually there is a free frozen yogurt machine with cones somewhere around. But I know when you get Ben&Jerry's, you must pay and the shakes at Johnny Rockets. Anything else though is usually free.

18. It really depends on the ship/port. A good amount of people get off, but then some stay on to take advantage of the spa and stuff onboard that is usually packed.

Hope some of this helps! :)

1. We have a balcony for the first time. How do we get the best use out of it?

We eat room service breakfast out there. Otherwise, entering and leaving ports....keeps you from having to go to the top deck.

2. What's breakfast like when you order it in the room?

The choices are very limited.....eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, cereal, juices, coffee

3. Is there a midnight feast?

The conventional midnight buffet has gone away. But there will be a midnight Caribbean night on the pool deck with a HUGE spread of good food and ice carvings.

4. Is the last formal night a party night? On Princess, we had a NYE party almost.

It differs. There will be a champaign toast on the Promenade with the Captain. Also, there will be a 70's night party on the Promenade..among parades on other nights and other festivities.

5. We are on 2nd sitting. How do we fit that in with the shows?

On most nights, your shows will be before dinner.

6. Is there a daily itinerary?

It's called the Cruise Compass. You will get this in your room every evening for the following day.

7. Is there wireless internet, and is it expensive?

The ship does have WiFi in certain areas. Never used it though.

8. What are the kids clubs like? Mine will be 15 and 12.

The kids clubs are enormous. The arcade is bigger than most arcades you see in malls.

9. Will be get caught smuggling a box or two of wine on board, and has anyone ever experienced the wrath of RCI over this?

If it is caught, they may confiscate it....no more.

10. Presumably we can get drinks passes for the kids. What do you reckon my drinks budget would be for a beer and a wine pre dinner, a bottle with dinner and maybe a drink after?

For one or two? For a week cruise, expect a couple hundred dollars on the tab. Drink prices are comparable to shore prices (at least, here in Key West they are).

11. I love formal, love tux. But will I get away with smart jeans and a shirt on other nights? Just a question, opinions not really sought but I'm thick skinned.

It is frowned upon by a few (passengers), but you will not be turned away. I just suggest making it look fashionable.

12. Is there a trick to getting bookings for the kids for the likes of the wave rider and ice skating?

It will be listed on you daily Cruise Compass. They just have to sign a waiver. For the Flowrider, they schedule certain times. Go tot he Flowrider and you'll see the schedules.

13. What are the shows like, and how often?

There is some sort of show every night. DO NOT MISS THE ICE SHOW!!!

14. Will there be a separate show lounge for comedians etc.?

There is a piano bar (Schooner Bar), English pub, Boleros, On-Air Club, etc. There will be a comedian, but the show will be in the main theater.

15. If I wanted to have the odd shirt laundered, is it expensive?

It's a few dollars.

16. What do you bring that's not obvious, but really handy? We brought walkies talkies on our previous cruise, but I will be hiding from the kids this time.

A power strip. There is only one electrical socket.

17. Can the kids get icecreams etc. in the day free?

Yes, it is free. It is poolside.

18. We cant afford excursions, will the ship be dead on shore days? We plan to walk and be back on foir lunch normally.

In most cases, yes. This is a good time to enjoy the ship's pools.

Use your balcony for whatever you want, whenever you want!

Breakfast, unless it's "continental" is difficult in your room, unless you have a suite witha dining table. It's hard to eat a full meal off of a coffee table or even smaller patio table! there's just no room to put anything (and they bring multiple plates, condiments, cups, etc...)

they've done away with the "midnight buffets"--and since you have 2nd seating, you won't be hungry, anyway! 2nd seating ends after 10pm. Your shows will be BEFORE dinner, unless it's the "adult" show--that starts at 10:30.

You will recieve a Daily Compass with all that day's activities.

Internet is about $.55 per minute--less if you buy a 'package' of minutes. It's a slow connection, too.

Most kids LOVE the clubs! You may not be able to drag them out!!!

Folks "smuggle" wine (and other stuff) all the time---some get caught--some don't! Good luck with that!

Yes, jeans are ok, but sorta hot for a Caribbean route---twill dockers are better! Pressing is 1/2 the price of dry-cleaning--not a budget breaker for the odd item or two.

All of the show will be in the main theater--even the comedians--the ice show, of course will be in the ice theater!

there is soft-serve frozen yogurt avail....don't know if it's 24 hours, tho!

There are alot of things to do onshore without excursions...going to the beach is a cab fare....take the ship's towels...and the ship is almost emptly on port days, which makes it a great time to use the pool! Get a guidebook on your ports, so you'll know what to do that won't cost much (or anything!!!!)

have fun!

Royal Caribbean is a wonderful cruise line and I'm sure you'll have a great time. Here are some of my suggestions:

1. We have a balcony for the first time. How do we get the best use out of it?

The night before, put your room service order request in for breakfast. Don't make it too early, but a reasonable time for you to get up and get moving.

Take the time to just lounge on the balcony in some good weather.

Bring some magazines and books to read on the balcony. Nice quiet way to spend some down time.

We like ordering a bottle of champagne for sail-away in the Ports and then sitting on the balcony and enjoying the sailaway.

2. What's breakfast like when you order it in the room?

Like others have stated, it is varied but the menu is usually the same every day. We have actually resorted to going up to the Windjammer Buffet, getting our food for breakfast, then bringing it back down and having it on our balcony. This way you can take advantage of the freshly cooked omlettes!

3. Is there a midnight feast?

As stated above, they now have late night Fiestas on the Pool Deck. The "Midnight Buffet" is gone.

4. Is the last formal night a party night? On Princess, we had a NYE party almost.

On the Indy, since they have the Promenade, there are often Parades late at night. Check your Compass (RCI Daily Activity Sheet) to see when it will be held. Lots of fun! Usually a 70's, 60's or 50's party!

5. We are on 2nd sitting. How do we fit that in with the shows?

Shows are scheduled around your dinner seating times. They may be scheduled before or after your dinner so check the Compass each day.

6. Is there a daily itinerary?

Yes, there is a daily itinerary and it is posted in the "Compass" which is delivered to your stateroom every evening. If, by chance, you do not receive one, there are extras next to Guest Relations Desk.

7. Is there wireless internet, and is it expensive?

Sorry, can't answer this one. Leave this to the techies!!:D

8. What are the kids clubs like? Mine will be 15 and 12.

Again, I'm not sure. I will leave this question to all the Moms and Dads to answer.:D

9. Will be get caught smuggling a box or two of wine on board, and has anyone ever experienced the wrath of RCI over this?

IMHO, not worth the possibility of being denied boarding. This is strictly against RCI policy.

10. Presumably we can get drinks passes for the kids. What do you reckon my drinks budget would be for a beer and a wine pre dinner, a bottle with dinner and maybe a drink after?

Sodas for the kids are not free. You'll need to purchase "soda cards" for the kids. Price is dependent on number of days cruising. There are free things for them to drink like milk, tea, lemonade and water.

As for the beer and wine, this too is hard to answer because bottles of wine are different prices. Your choices will determine your costs. My guess would be around $40 - $60 per night. Of course, if you like premium wines, much higher!

11. I love formal, love tux. But will I get away with smart jeans and a shirt on other nights? Just a question, opinions not really sought but I'm thick skinned.

Okay, good that you are "thick-skinned"! LOL! My guess is that you'll be just fine on non-formal nights. I've seen it all in the dining room. Would I do it, absolutely not. My DH is a devout casual guy, but even he wears Dockers into the Dining Room on non-formal nights.

12. Is there a trick to getting bookings for the kids for the likes of the wave rider and ice skating?

Cannot answer this question. Sorry.

13. What are the shows like, and how often?

The shows vary each night. Sometimes they have comedians, other times they have singing acts or magicians. Since you are traveling with kids, I would definitely find out if the evenings entertainment is "kid friendly." The Royal Caribbean Production shows are usually very good and I highly recommend them.

14. Will there be a separate show lounge for comedians etc.?

The Main Theatre is usually used to showcase all the shows. Occasionally, you will be able to see other late night comedians in a different area. Again, check the Compass for these times/places.

15. If I wanted to have the odd shirt laundered, is it expensive?

So, you have an "odd shirt"! Just kiddin'! The laundry prices are reasonable and it will cost you about $2.00 to dry-clean and less to launder. Prices do change, but, IMHO, the price is very reasonable.

16. What do you bring that's not obvious, but really handy? We brought walkies talkies on our previous cruise, but I will be hiding from the kids this time.

You'll be hiding from the kids? First, the Indy is a very big ship. I certainly wouldn't suggest you "hide" from them. If you meant you'll hide the WT from them, then that is a good idea!

I would definitely bring a roll of $1.00 bills as tips for the bartenders and room service. Makes your life much easier!

If you do a search on these boards, there is a thread about just this subject! There are too many to list!

17. Can the kids get icecreams etc. in the day free?

Sorry, don't have the answer to this one either. Some of the ships have soft-serve up in the Windjammer Cafe. I believe the Indy does, but I would ask someone who has already been on the ship and can confirm this!

18. We cant afford excursions, will the ship be dead on shore days? We plan to walk and be back on foir lunch normally.

The ship is usually very quiet on Port days. Even if you can't afford excursions, find things to do in Port that don't require spending money. Some of the best things we have done in Ports are free!!

Once back on board for lunch, enjoy the quiet feel of the ship. This may be a great time to use the pools and gym.

Anyway, that's enough for now.

Thank you!

Very much so!!!

Fantastic! And hey, I might be 45 but I AM fashionable...

Get a guidebook on your ports, so you'll know what to do that won't cost much (or anything!!!!)

have fun!

Thanks. Dont know what dockers is, but hey!

Beaches sound a good idea.

Thank you!

Oh C'Celia! Thanks for that.

I really dont know what Dockers are but I look the biz in my jeans, believe me x

Hi,

18. We cant afford excursions, will the ship be dead on shore days? We plan to walk and be back on foir lunch normally.

Please visit the ports of call boards and see what activities may be available at reasonable prices. We do a private tour of the islands over excursions. The cost is like $30pp. or so. Group tours may be cheaper. The tours are great. You get to see the island. Fabulous picture opportnities. The tour guides are waiting for you at the port. Tours usually include beach visits and shopping stops. In St. Thomas we didn't have any thing planned. Being the only ship at port that day, a taxi driver was not busy and asked if we would like a tour. $15pp.

It disappoints me to think of someone traveling to such beautiful places and never really seeing anything.

Happy Crusin' to Ya.
