Extra "costs" on CCL and other questions

Hi all,

Sorry for the second post but I didnt think drink prices really fit in with kids club questions

I am trying not to be surprised and CCL Dream is just so much cheaper than the Freedom I think I am going to switch our arch 2010 cruise to the Dream. I am just trying to make sure there isn't any hidden costs I am not expecting.

1. How much is the average drink price on carnival?

2. Are there any extras such as kids lunch etc that we would pay extra for?

3. I know the super saver rate means your deposit is non-refundable but is it transferable?

4. Are there activities onboard that require payment? Besides the casino!

5. Are there specialty restaurants we should try that have an additional fee?

6. How are the tv stations and how much is a movie if we wanted one? Do they have something kid appropriate on tv for my son when I am getting ready?

Thanks so much!

Anna

I dont think you mean super saver, you are talking about early saver that the deposit is non refundable. If you have to transfer the date, its a $50 pp change, if you mean booking with Carnival and transferring to a TA, no cost for that kind of transfer.

There are drink specials for $3.75 and $4.75, but most drinks are over $5, you can buy a drink card for 5 drinks to refill your DOD.

I think the supper club is $30.

tips are extra same as on RCL.

capachino and espesso in the dining room for all meals is free unlike on RCL.

1. Drinks are variable but if you budget for about six bucks per you should be fine.

2. The only extra I can think of for the kiddos would be the video arcade and evening baby sitting service.

3. Dunno... call Carnival and ask. I'd be amazed if they weren't transferable.

4. The video arcade is all I can think of... There is a specialty coffee shop that's extra cost...

5. The supper club!! You MUST do the supper club! Wonderful experience and it's $30/pp.

6. The network stations all come from Denver. There's CNN International, ESPN and some others. Movies are about $7.99 but there's three FREE movie channels, one that runs child friendly movies. They're on at differing times throughout the day.

Hope this helps!!

wow........CCL gets REAL TV??? Like ABC, CBS, NBC???? not that i watch TV all that much, but something other than fox news 24/7 would be swell...

Hmmmm....another reason for expanding our hoizons over to the whale tail ships.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and great answers! Yeah the espresso with dinner is a big selling point for me ;)

As far as the "DOD card for five drinks" what is that? Could you explain a little? I read somewhere on here they let you buy liquor bottles on ship for in your room. Is that really the case? Are the prices so high that it is nott worth it?

Pastries cost $ or just certain super special kinds?

Thanks again!

I forgot to add a thank you for the fabulous link! I think drinks are overall cheaper than RCCL :)

DOD or Drink of the Day Drinks are even cheaper, you need to look for them in the Capers. The Capers is the informational plan of the day that you get every night on your bed with chocolate mints.

Drinks of the Day can run from 2.95 to 3.95 etc.

If you call Carnival's Bon Voyage department you can preorder bottles of liquor. I do not believe you can buy them onboard for consumption during the cruise.

That is correct. If you buy it when you are on the ship, they hold it and bring it to your cabin on the last day of your cruise.

I don't recall getting major network tv on Princess. So you can watch a show in real time on a major network on Carnival ships?

We bring a portable DVD player with tons of movies for the kids and hook it into the TV. My older DS did find some TV he liked, but for me, the movie is great. We use it in the afternoon before dinner to have some quiet time...if we're lucky, my younger DS will fall asleep!

The "extras" on Carnival are no more than on RCCL so that won't override the cost savings you're getting on your cabin.

Either way, you can't go wrong, you will have a wonderful time!

Yep...well, Denver time! lol

I've had to go to the cabin with my son so he could nap before and actually caught my soaps! I wouldn't go in there to WATCH tv...but if I had to be in there anyway...nice option

And the DVD players, etc do not hook up to the TVs...except maybe in the suites??? Not sure about that...

we called pvp and were told that if you transferred early saver reservation there would be a 50/pp fee to transfer. hopefully we got accurate info

That has been my understanding about the early saver. You get price assurance but it is not refundable and only tranferable with a $50pp fee. Still sounds like a good deal to me as I have yet to cancel or switch a cruise.

I dont remember getting all tv regular stations. And since they come from Denver, you will be watching Denver's local news, watching snow storms when you are sitting in 90 degrees at a port. I think you get CNN international, not the regular CNN, like RCL gets FOX, Carnival gets CNN International.

I haven't preordered the liquor, but the prices that have been quoted around here have been around $40 for a bottle of Absolut, and around $55 for Crown/Jack, just to kind of give you an idea. These are the 1L bottles. More expensive than at home, but not much (Absolut's about $30 around here). And definitely cheaper compared to buying drinks individually! I think Absolut's $5.75 on the ship now.

I can answer in more detail about the early saver rate because I called and asked a ton of questions. There is a $50 fee per person to switch or cancel the cruise and CCL holds the remaining deposit that you paid for you to book another cruise with them within a years time. After that, I do believe CCL gets to keep it.

This may vary from ship to ship. When we were on Conquest last April they were allowing liquor purchases to be taken directly to your stateroom, but only during the last 2 days of the cruise. (could have been just the last day, my memory is a little fuzzy on that)

Darn good thing too!!! My rumrunners were empty!! :D

Since this was Conquest (Host Mach's second home :)) I'm sure Mach can shed some more light on this. I'm convinced there is nothing about CCL and Conquest in particular that he does not know. :)

I've always been able to take liquor purchases back with me on the last day.
