Monte Carlo/Monaco

Hi,

We will be arriving in Cannes on the Independence this coming June. We are looking at going to Monaco/Monte Carlo on our own. First, has anyone taken the train from Cannes to Monte Carlo? Any words of advice on that would be appreciated.

Also a concern is getting around once we get to Monte Carlo/Monaco. First, are there taxis available at the train station to take us into town? We want to go to the Prince's Palace. Can the taxi take us right up to it? If you get to the Palace any other way (ie by foot), how steep of a walk is it?

Thanks!

The palace is on top of a giant rock, you can walk there and there are some elevators of some sort. We choose to use the wonderful bus system, I can't remember the price but it was probably 1 euro/pp. We rode up to the exotic gardens and than back to "the rock" for the changing of the guard. They have the cleanest buses I have ever seen! Sections of Monte Carlo are VERY hilly.

BTDT - but not on a cruise.

IT's easy and not expensive to take the trains from Nice. Check the schedule (TI's usually have a nice little compact booklet with times) because the return trains don't run very frequently (or there might be a 1.5 hour gap without a train)

Take lots of € coins if you do not have a chip & PIN CC. You will need it to buy your return tix in Monaco.

In addition to the cleanest buses, Monaco has the cleanest train station!

The palace is up a steep hill. Walked it in August heat and did have to stop along the way to sip some water. Views along the way are spectacular. You can take a taxi ( not sure the cost), bus, the tourist train goes up there, or pay for the elevator. I honestly enjoyed the walk, but it would have been much better without the oppressive heat that day.

There are beautiful gardens cut in to the hillside, you can see where Princess Grace is buried (free entrance) and we also really enjoyed the aquarium that Jacques Cousteau was director of for many years.

A couple tips: There's a Carrefour within walking distance to the train station. Great place to stock up on basics (ie cheap bottles of water) if you need them. For an inexpensive, but yummy lunch, try one of the Pain Niçoise sandwiches - Niçoise salad on a bun.

Enjoy your day there. Our family certainly enjoyed it and I think it's much nicer than Nice.
