Aplmac Posted July 14, 2009 Author #176 Share Posted July 14, 2009 Took over 40 minutes but this was the most interesting thread I've ever had the pleasure to read.. ...photo classes and how/where/what to purchase thrown in for FREE.. ...plus all those lovely pics......have much of the info stored for future use........ Thanks again for all of you for the pics which made the text go a long way - enjoyed every minute of it and will be checking back to see what's new......:) Thank you for the kind words. Glad you've enjoyed it. _____________________________________________ You've probably seen this already but here it is again We were in the taxi coming back from Marigot came upon this incredibly turquoise scene, while on the move and I'm playing with my new fisheye lens You're looking at Carnival Liberty and Victory in Port with a Princess ship in the background somewhere . DrmnOfMaui Posted July 14, 2009 #177 Share Posted July 14, 2009 Aplmac! I'm down to 3 days to departure!!! I just want to confirm my watertaxi stops in St. Maarten.... What stops do we stop at for Segway (the guys will segway while we shop)? Guavaberry? Camera Shop? I tried reading back thru the thread, but I got my stops confused... so I thought I'd just ask! I've printed your pictures and have them in my file to take with me. How has your weather been? My husband tells me that when I see "showers" that it is normal and that it just means that there might be a quick shower during the day. Here "showers" usually means a really yucky day. My daughter is here and has asked me to ask you if you have any other shops that you really like that we shouldn't miss!? (She's on the lookout for a lesser expensive necklace... her own money so probably something more local/touristy). Thanks again for all the info you gave me (and others) over these few months that I've been researching. I don't know if you know just how much you have helped us in our planning. My husband is even referring to you as "My wife's friend in Barbados says" when he talks to people about what we are planning.:)

What stops do we stop at for Segway (the guys will segway while we shop)? ===> I have no idea. Guavaberry? Camera Shop? ===> try the 1st. stop, like we did! How's your weather been? ===> Not rainy yet -but give it another month or so! My husband tells me that when I see "showers" that it is normal and that it just means that there might be a quick shower during the day. ===> He's right. He always is. My daughter is here and has asked me to ask you if you have any other shops that you really like that we shouldn't miss!? ===> Yeahh...the whole of Front Street! :D (She's on the lookout for a lesser expensive necklace... her own money so probably something more local/touristy). ===> She'll find it..all over! We got off the water taxi at its first stop.. ..found Front Street at its very Eastern end quite quickly (to your left) - soon discovered Blanc du Nil shop with classy stuff all in white.. and then the Guavaberry place soon after that. Continuing Westward along Front St. I soon found Boolchand's camera store -my real destination. Just keep wandering! __________________________________ Kiddo's necklace shouldn't be a problem. In fact almost as soon as we were off the water taxi, and even before we found Front St. there was a small collection of curio shops,on our right that are keeping her two necklaces for her. Over the course of the day she will of course be tempted to buy two or three.. so she may want to take oooh...fifteen to twenty thousand dollars with her? :D but don't spend it all in one place okay? . Aplmac Posted July 19, 2009 Author #180 Share Posted July 19, 2009 Is this where you get off for the beach? No it's not: this is the first stop at Philipsburg. Stay on board the water taxi and get off at the next stop. As you approach the second stop, the beach situation will be quite obvious. .
The Big Booper Posted July 19, 2009 #181 Share Posted July 19, 2009 (edited) The water taxi leaves the Wathey cruise ship pier and makes 2 stops (soon to be 3, per Gary). The downtown pier in the middle of Phillipsburg, lined up with the Court house and, Bobby's Marina, at the East End of Phillipsburg. Sometimes the order varies. Great Bay Beach is at the middle of town. If you are a newcomer to the island, ask which stop you are coming to. You get great photos from the boat as it aims for Phillipsburg and the whole harbor is before you. Edited July 19, 2009 by The Big Booper

This looks all very sunny. I am trying to pick a cruise for Feb and this gets me thinking there is a little too much desert for us? comments anyone? TIA - Eileen Yes, St Martin is somewhat a semi-desert island, no lush rainforests such as Dominica, Jamaica, St Lucia, etc. Most beach bars that rent loungers also rent big umbrellas if you wan't to avoid the sun or at least hold down your exposure. kaclmay Posted August 29, 2009 #187 Share Posted August 29, 2009 ABSOLUTELY stunning pictures - thanks everyone that has posted, this helps me tremendously (I'll be headed to St. Maarten in early March). One question though.... to get from ship to Maho Beach (gotta see those airplanes), do we take the Water Taxi and get off at the second stop? Where to from there? Or is there another transportation method we should use? Thanks so much!
The Big Booper Posted August 29, 2009 #188 Share Posted August 29, 2009 >>SNIP<<........One question though.... to get from ship to Maho Beach (gotta see those airplanes), do we take the Water Taxi and get off at the second stop? Where to from there? Or is there another transportation method we should use? Thanks so much! No. The water taxi does a circle route in Great Bay Harbor at Philipsburg running between the cruise ship pier and two stops in Phillipsburg itself. Maho is on the other side of the island and can be reached by cab. Dispatchers at the pier will set up group cab rides to get you a low fare, usually $6 pp one way, with a fully loaded vehicle. emcee207 Posted September 6, 2009 #189 Share Posted September 6, 2009 I just spent 40 minutes reading all these posts and looking at all the fantastic shots. My Dad passed away about 6 years ago. He was an electroics/camera buff. Wasn't very good with the cameras but he like having them. Here is my question for you camera buffs. He had a bunch of stuff that my Mom gave me when he died. Some Nikon telephoto lenses, a nikon camera, a Leica camera, etc. Where can I find out if this stuff is worth anything? I need a honest answer that is why I haven't brought the stuff to a camera shop or ? Can any of my fellow cruisers help here? If so, I will get the stuff out and find the correct info on it all. Of course, the camera are all film and not digital. But, I would assume the lenses are still used, correct???

Yes, the lenses should still be useful on some of today's digital camera bodies(even if some auto-functions don't work) the film BODIES are close to useless, since no-one shoots film these days. The Leica is probably a collectible(ship it to me first thing Monday morning, please) but overall (apart from the Leica) I wouldn't plan on building your new house out of what you get for the Nikon stuff ;) if you can find someone to take it off your hands. There's an awful lot of that 'vintage' stuff hanging around. .
emcee207 Posted September 7, 2009 #191 Share Posted September 7, 2009 Thanks so much, that is about what I thought I'd hear. I had heard the Leica's are "collectibles". This one is in like new condition. Not sure what I'll do with it. Thanks so much for the info and for your great pics!!

A lot depends on what model/year it is.Maybe you'll post a pic for us to see? The M8 is the new digital camera, costs about $5K new. Maybe it's not an M-series at all -but a SLR ??

Aplmac Posted September 13, 2009 Author #195 Share Posted September 13, 2009 (edited) OK, what the heck, gone this far....Here is the Leica it is a R3 Electronic And the Nikormat EL I'm sure you'll get something(considerable) for the Leica R3, even though it may be a film camerabecause there are Leica collectors out there who should be interested. The Nikkormat reminds me of my first camera! -I had a Nikkormat FTn.:) The Nikkormat and the other non-Leica stuff looks kinda 1980s which probably is not good news for re-sale.. but looking thru photography magazines, I often see adverts from businesses interested in buying "your used equipment" http://usedcamerabuyer.com/ so your best bet might be to buy a copy of Popular Photography or Shutterbug magazines and start looking thru the various adverts down towards the backs of those mags and see what you can come up with. You'll also see second-hand values assoc. with the sort of stuff you have. You'll get a few hundred dollars for your Dad's stuff, I'm fairly sure but not enough to buy that new car, sorry. Point is, you'll be moving it, and turning it into money! :) Wish I could afford to take the R3 off your hands bcoz I've always wanted a Leica, although I trend towards the M series -not their SLRs... emcee207 Posted September 13, 2009 #196 Share Posted September 13, 2009 Thanks so much for the help. It's not so much about the money; I just feel bad having the stuff sit in my musty basement gathering dust. LOL, "80's" is off, I have the original bill of sale for the Nikormat which is 1977. LOL, "80's" is off, I have the original bill of sale for the Nikormat which is 1977. Notice my comment above about fungus/mildew in the lenses.Best avoided by taking the front lens caps off and leave them pointing at the light/window. I notice you live in the Boston,MA area... there's gotta be a few large camera shops in your municipality that can point you in the right direction? Looking thru a May 09 copy of Popular Photog. magazine I have here I notice that B&H Photo in NYC has a used equipment section and their URL is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ where I see a B&H USED Dept. box over on the right, about halfway down -try that Edited September 13, 2009 by aplmac
