kobicleo Posted May 4, 2009 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2009 I just got an e-mail from the Courtyard Miramar in San Juan that they are having maintenace issues and had to relocate me to the Howard Johnson. Does anyone else have a reservation at the Courtyard that didn't get this notice? Does anyone know how the Howard Johnson Carolina is? Any help would be appreciated. sassie8484 Posted May 4, 2009 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2009 I don't know about that particular hotel, but Howard Johnson as a chain has low standards... but there are exceptions. Checkout the reviews on Trip Advisor. And make sure the Courtyard is paying for your new room. If you gave them a credit card, your reservation was guaranteed... maintenance issues or not. Also check to see what the going rate for a HJ room similar to yours is going for. If it's much less than what you reserved/paid for, I'd be worried and would insist that the Courtyard move you to a more comparable hotel for no increase in cost to you. Davey Interweb Posted May 5, 2009 #4 Share Posted May 5, 2009 The hotel "walked" you. I've driven by the HoJo you're speaking of a couple of times and I can't say anything about the property itself, but it's in the same area as the Embassy Suites I stayed at before a cruise. It's maybe a five minute drive from the airport and 15 minutes to the Pan American pier area. Just as an FYI, 4-star hotels in San Juan are going for around $150 or less - taxes in - right around the dates you're traveling. If you've paid more than this for the Courtyard Miramar (or now the HoJo), you're probably paying too much.
Colo Cruiser Posted May 5, 2009 #5 Share Posted May 5, 2009 I agree about the low standards, better check this out!
megr1125 Posted May 5, 2009 #6 Share Posted May 5, 2009 they should have moved you to another marriott brand property first....how did you book???? if you booked direct with marriott press the issue with them through customer care......especially if you have status. and they need to protect your rate as well...it is THEIR fault there are issues... HoJos are generally BELOW courtyards..>WELL below courtyards. Marriott has the CY at Isla Verde, the Renaissance La Concha, The SJ Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino......and i can't believe they are all full! BTW i just tried booking (assuming it is this weekend??? ) and there are rooms.;......at all FOUR marriott brands. The other CY is on 30 bucks more and the other 2 hotels are between 60-80 more....) Not sure what is going on.....keep us updated.
Crown Prince Posted May 5, 2009 #7 Share Posted May 5, 2009 This is bait & switch. I have heard of this "WALKING" you to another hotel that is less Stars. I think it was Peter Greenberg (The billionaire, "Travel Detective"). I shall search for a reference for you. You are being had and I would be very angry.:eek::eek::eek::eek:
G'ma Posted May 5, 2009 #8 Share Posted May 5, 2009 From trip advisor: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g644389-d151806-Reviews-Howard_Johnson_Hotel_Carolina_San_Juan-Carolina_Puerto_Rico.html Why not call the Marriott to confirm the maintenance? kobicleo Posted May 5, 2009 Author #9 Share Posted May 5, 2009 Thanks for all your responses. I did some research and read reviews on HOJO, unfortunately they were not good ones. My problem is that I work for Marriott and as an employee if they oversell or have issues I am the first to go:(. I ended up canceling the reservation and booking at the Stellaris for double the price, but I'd rather stay at a good brand than a HOJO. I know the reputation of HOJO on Long Island is not good, but I thought maybe it would have been okay, but I went on TripAdvisor and didn't like the reviews. Thank you all again. sunsetbeachgal Posted May 5, 2009 #11 Share Posted May 5, 2009 Definitely did the right thing...a bad hotel would have been an upsetting start to your vacation...I have stayed at that Courtyard and it was nice-too bad they "bumped" you!
