Crude oil prices rising..getting nearer to $70 a barrel

Some of these Princess cheerleaders live in fantasy land. I see now from being on this Princess board that you can not take them serious. They have blinders on, Princess can do no wrong in their eyes. I am happy that you love PCL but some of these Princess cheerleaders need to come back to the real world. I guess you want us to say" Please Princess charge everyone additional fuel surcharge, I understand your not making enough money." Hopefully Princess isn't as cold as you guys and won't hit us up with the fuel surcharge.

Your not gonna cry are you?

Does all this make a difference if you go on a cruise or not? Yeah, it's an added expense at a time when things are difficult. If it's necessary for Princess and the other cruise lines to recapture the costs that they are occuring in order to keep them viable, protect their stakeholders and provide a quality product, then that's what they will do.

If that extra cost meant going or not going then I guess we shouldn't be going in the first place. Do we like paying more? Of course not. Do we adjust spending on other area of the trip because of this? Probably not. We are going anyway.....besides, there is nothing I've read that the price will exceed the threshold anway. I've got other things I could be worrying about.

Question: When we will know if the fuel surcharge is implemented for our cruise? Is this something we'll know in advance, or can they tack it on during the middle of our cruise? Is this something my TA will tell me, or will they tell us when we embark? When is it okay to spend the money I have set aside "just in case"?

I would say, like others have suggested, that oil would have to go above $70 for some sustained period for the surcharges to come back. I can't see them adding to cruises already sailing. I also think that when the surcharge comes back that it won't go to $9 right away either. It started at $5 last time and I think they will phase it back in gradually as well.

Dan, Since last time the fuel surcharge was so confusing to passengers, re: the sum was different depending on when they booked. My guess is if and when it does come back this time, the surcharge will be the same for everyone. Just a guess on my part, but it would save a lot of confusion.

And I don't expect it will have to sustain that price for more than a day to have them reinstate the surcharge. Guess we all will have to wait and see on this one. ;)

At least the cruise lines voluntarily removed the Fuel Surcharge (or refunded it to those who paid it) when the price dropped...the airlines instituted those baggage charges last summer when fuel prices went way up, but they never removed them when fuel prices went down, and recent news shows say that this extra charge has translated to many millions in incremental income for those carriers who charge it...

Not only are they not dropping charges, but they're instituting new charges. The day will come when no airline will let you check anything free.

Thier lattest idea is to start charging by the pound  And Im not talking about bags..

Im sure that will go over well .

Do you suppose my 2 kids who are under 60 pounds will pay half fares ?? I'd bet not ;)

After Carnival got spanked on adding the surcharge to existing bookings, and had to remove them, they also couldn't adjust the charge to bookings made when the charge took effect. As oil prices, the fuel charge both went up, new bookings paid the higher charge for a particular cruise but people who booked months earlier paid the lower charge in effect at that time. I don't have a problem with that since it was just another perk for booking early. We see rates going up closer to sailing all the time and people don't cry foul over that.

I know they have left themselves the opening in their wording, but we better all be hoping that if the surcharge comes back, that they gradually implement it, not go right to $9. If $9 was where the got to at $140 oil last year, and they start it at $9 this year at $70 oil, where are they going to go when oil goes over $100 again?

We were on CCL Freedom last Xmas and were the first group entitled to the refund, which was donated back to the casino, but that was our choice.

From our understanding, oil has to hit $70.01+ even if just for a moment outside of 5 days from within your cruise date for them to be able to charge if they want to, so we cruise 6-10-09 and if it stays below 70 until 6-5-09 we keep our money, if it goes over we may lose.

I wonder if they will raise my airfare on my plane trip for my cruise. No, because I purchased my ticket they will not raise my ticket. Now if I were to plan a trip today, the rate would be more expensive because fuel has gone up. The cruise lines learned some lessons last year but I am sure they will learn more this year if they add a fuel surcharge. Yes I have read everything and I know they are allowed but it still doesn't make it right.

Ah, but, the airlines can, do and will add a fuel surcharge at any time they wish. It's in the airline ticket contract. In addition, there are other fees that can and do come up that will be collected at the airport if you have already purchased your ticket.

It has happened in the past and could happen again. It is a separate charge paid at the airport by those holding tickets....or is added to the total price of a new ticket. If the government decides to up the security fee, you'll pay it....if your destination begins charging a landing fee, you'll pay it.......

You don't have to wonder. The airlines did it to me last year when they instituted a baggage fee after I booked my flight. When I complained, they allowed me a refund and I booked on another airline. I agree with you that it doesn't make it right. I understand that it might be a reason for some not to book Carnival/Princess.

Well, better not book anybody else either. All the cruise lines have the same information about bringing back the fuel charge - and many of them are higher than CCL or Princess.

I think this is a bit harsh...some people live on budgets and can only cruise once every couple of years, so why judge them for having to reallocate funds from one part of their budget like souveniers, photos, etc. to something like paying extra for fuel. I hope the Fuel Surcharge doesn't come back, but if it does I'm not going to blast someone for being upset about it.

Most of what you say is true....it would put a financial strain on the old vacation budget.

However, nobody held anyone's feet to the fire and forced them to book a cruise.

And, anyone who is old enough to cruise should be able to read and know the possibility of a fuel charge is there....and plan accordingly.

Oil now at $65.08. Hopefully it stays low. "The rally came after the government said U.S. crude stocks fell more than expected last week." That's not a good sign but let's stay positive.

I figure there is nothing I can do about it, so why worry. If we get hit with the surcharge, too bad.
