Expensive account for teens.

We have two teens, 13 and 14 and this is our first cruise. Do you usually include them on the expense account. Other than video games, what else can they charge. Can you put a limit for each?

After boarding you can go the the Purser's Desk and establish individual accounts for each of them. If you put cash on the account that will limit the amount they can spend.

:)

Thank you, that's the answer I was hoping for.

When my kids were that age I limited them to $100 each for the week but they never came close to spending that much  You can set the limit after you board at the Purser's desk. You don't have to put cash though...we used a credit card and still limited them.

What did they or can spend their money on??

It's not a bad idea to set up an account with limited funds for the kids. One cruise, our son checked out a basketball that ended up going overboard through no fault of his own. He had no money on his S&S card and the deposit was $20, so he was locked out of his room and had to hunt us down. Took awhile.

So if you see a basketball floating around the Caribbean, please let us know.

We've cruised with our kids 3 times & gave them no charging privileges. There are plenty of things they can charge to the S&S card, as was listed above by previous posters. If they wanted something extra, they just had to be with us.

Thank you for asking this question. We cruise often but never have taken our children's friends.

Next August, we will be taking my daughter and her two friends for her Sweet 16.

So, am I correct, that I can put a certain dollar amount on each of their cards and if they hit that limit, their card will be rejected?

We will let them charge virgin drinks, we will buy soda cards and don't think they will be in the arcade (unless with boys...GASP!!).

Although I have told both set of parents, the children will be responsible for spending money for souviners, I did tell them my husband and I will be responsible for

all excursions and shipboard purchases.

Perhaps I can set a limit on the amount for shipboard purchases, and tell the parents that the kids will be able to charge $XXX amount (whatever we decide). If they get close to that amount, my dh and I can let them know and just monitor and probably just pay whatever the final is, if it isn't by too much.

I guess after typing and reading what I wrote, it would be the same to do that with cash or credit card.

Thank you though for making me aware of this.

Yes this is what we do - put $100 on each of our son's accounts and then we actually monitor it during the week. They do a great job not overspending and usually the money is used for the older one on specialty coffee drinks and the younger one in the arcade. They both bought carnival tshirts the last day of the cruise on sale. It works well for us. Good luck!

I got a chuckle out of your title "Expensive Acct for Teens." Was that a freudian slip? :D

Actually it wasn't, tried to edit it but realized you can't edit the title, I'm glad someone got a chuckle out of it .

There are a couple of ways to handle this.

I've always put up a separate account for my grandson right after boarding. This can be done at the Guest Services desk. I request that his gratuities be put on my account. Then, give them a cash deposit for him....usually around 50.00. He knows once that amount is gone, he's through spending money. I also put a soda card on my account.

This makes it easy for him to play video games, get cake and/or coffee or chocolate at the gourmet pastry and coffee concession, make purchases in the gift shop, etc., without him having to chase me down all the time.

For the past 2 years, he has brought his own money and, if the 50.00 cash deposist starts running low, he just adds more of his own money to his account.

We are planning to take our nieces, who will be 15 and 13, on their first cruise next year. I have told each girl that they need to save up the cash to put down on their S&S cards. Then they can spend whatever they want, but the money is theirs! I will pre-pay their gratuities, so they will just be responsible for what they actually spend. Now, the 6 year old nephew, he gets no charging privelidges (I just can't make this look right, excuse the spelling!) at all! I will buy him a soda card, and let him pick out some stuff at the gift shop, but he's too young to understand the money being "free." The girls get it, so that's how we're handling it. Good luck with your cruise!

In the past we did not let our kids having charging priveledges. As another poster said, if they wanted anything they would hunt us down and we would get, if we thought it was OK. We had bought them soda cards, so usually it was some souvenier in gift shop they wanted. This time they are a bit older (21 and 18) and in their own cabin. I love the idea of putting some cash on their cards, but can I still monitor purchases, since they are in separate cabin?

On the last cruise my kids went on we had put OBC on the account ahead of time for them to spend. Previously I had put $110 to cover the sodacard and tip. My kids then added an additional $150 for stuff they may have wanted to buy. My children have liked to buy a small piece of swarovski crystal on each cruise they have done so they generally set aside $30-$50 for that purchase. They didn't buy the foofoo non alcoholic type drinks. Game room, certainly my son can go through a bit there. But hoping with the new setup having the WII, Playstations that he will spend more time there than in the arcade. They also buy small items in the gift shops too. I figure he can go through as much in the arcade as I can spend in the casino.

Can this also be done:

I will have three 16 year old girls in a separate room than my dh and me.

Can I have the girls charges go directly to my account?

For instance, when I am boarding and handing in my paperwork (or doing online), can I give my creditcard and tell them that any charges for the three girls should show up on my account?

If so, maybe I'll just tell them they have a certain amount to spend and just monitor it throughout the week and if they get close or I see crazy spending, just let them know.

Could this be done?

Also, I know there are DoD cards or coupons, is there the same for virgin drinks? I will get them soda cards, maybe I could get them this too.

We will be on the Dream (yey)!

Thank you.

Yes, it should already be done that way to begin with. When you fill out your Funpass, if they have another booking number, just enter your last 4 digits of the Credit card you will be using in their booking. I forget if you have to add this on your Funpass or theirs but log on and you can figure it out.

Wendy's mom has her own booking number but her Sail & Sign account is linked to my charge card.

What happens if you put $100.00 cash on the s$s card and your child only spends $50.00. what happens to the other $50.00?

It will should be used for the entire bill if you owe. If you don't spend much then you get a check with your bill at the end of the cruise.
